Free speed: Anthony Gose will join the Jays

17 Jul
2012
by in General

If you're a fantasy owner with a desperate need for steals, head over to your league's home page, hit the "PLAYERS" tab, then type G-O-S-E in the search field.

Do it. Go. Shoo.

When Anthony Gose's name pops up, make the add.

Toronto just called up the 21-year-old Gose from Triple-A Las Vegas. He'll get a long look from the Jays, now that Jose Bautista has landed on the DL (wrist inflammation, not a fracture, reportedly a tendon issue. Uh-oh). In 92 games for Las Vegas this season, Gose has hit .292/.375/.432 with 18 doubles, 10 triples, five homers and 29 stolen bases. The kid swiped 70 bags in 85 attempts at Double-A in 2011, and he stole 76 bases at Single-A in '09. So he can run a little.

I'll make no promises about his batting average or his on-base skills, just for the record. Gose's career minor league slash line won't dazzle anyone (.265/.342/.395), plus he's struck out 501 times in 1,947 at-bats. He's not without flaws. And we should note that a .292 average in the hitter-friendly PCL barely gets you on the leaderboard.

But, again, Gose is a fast dude. Some of you will recall his three-steal inning in spring training, when he swiped second, third and home after drawing a leadoff walk. At the time, manager John Farrell had this to say:

''[Gose] is obviously exciting. He can take over on the basepaths. He has a combination of pure speed, plus the ability to read some things. You just turn him loose. He's a pure basestealer."

Well, OK then. Turn him loose. Let's do it. Gose is just two-percent owned, so you can all invest.
