LeSean McCoy has taunted tacklers with his own name

All right, this is fairly awesome: Over the weekend, word began spreading that Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy has used a clever catchphrase as he's juked would-be tacklers: his own last name.

Andrew Taglianetti, a senior at Pittsburgh and a former college teammate of Shady's, noted that in practice, McCoy could be damn near unstoppable. "The best part of Shady shaking people in practice," Taglianetti said on Twitter, "was he would say 'McCoy' as he jukes you. Absolutely fascinating."

Perfect. Just perfect. This easily trumps the previous best in-game catch-phrase, Gilbert Arenas' "hibachi!" Still unknown is whether McCoy actually says his name in game-time situations, but considering he ranks among the top 5 in the NFL in both yards and carries, everybody's hearing his name an awful lot these days.

Robert Edwards of the Gloucester County Times, in an email to Deadspin, noted that McCoy sorta-kinda confirmed the story. At practice this week, a reporter called out, "'Hey Shady, is that McCoy-juke story true?" Edwards noted that "LeSean, in response, made a little hitch move and whispered McCoy, McCoyyy, a couple times before exiting with a smile."

That's pretty much perfect right there. Now all Shady has to is get the defenders to say his name while he's running over them.

This weekend, the Eagles take on intrastate rival Pittsburgh. Someone needs to check with the Steelers secondary after the game to see if they heard voices.

Earlier today, we reported what appeared to be the NFL's latest conflict-of-interest debacle with its replacement refs. One side judge was pulled from the Week 2 New Orleans Saints-Carolina Panthers game for his public displays of Saints fandom, and it was revealed that the field judge in the Week 1 Arizona Cardinal-Seattle Seahawks game may have been paid by the Seahawks as a practice official in recent years.

Then, in an interview that must have had the league office passing out the Advil, Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy said on Philly radio station 94WIP that one of the officials in the Eagles' Sunday win over the Baltimore Ravens told McCoy that he needed the running back for his fantasy football team.

"It was more like joking," McCoy told me on the phone Tuesday afternoon during an interview promoting BODYARMOR SuperDrink. "People blew it up into more than it was. It was definitely that.

"But I'll tell you what," he said with a laugh, "I wouldn't mind if [the officials] gave us some calls in some of those games for their fantasy teams."

In truth, McCoy is a bit less heavy on the subject of replacement officials than some have been. "There are times when players get frustrated, but to be honest, I think [the calls] have gone both ways. There have been bad calls for the opponents and bad calls for the Eagles, so it goes both ways, and it really matters who's playing ball."

Joking or not, we're hoping that the NFL will advise the official in question that any appearance of impropriety at a point where all replacement officials are taken to task at a forensic level isn't the best way to go.

Replacement ref reportedly told LeSean McCoy, ‘I need you for my fantasy team!’

18 Sep
2012

We've reported two conflict-of-interest stories regarding replacement officials in the last few days. There was the case of former Pac-12 official Jeff Sardorus, who worked the Arizona Cardinals' season-opening win over the Seattle Seahawks despite the fact that he was reportedly paid by the Seahawks in each of the three previous years to officiate in-season practices.

Then, there was the case of side judge Brian Stropolo, who was actually flown in to help call the Week 2 game between the New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers despite the fact that Stropolo's Facebook page had pictures of him in Saints fan gear and tailgating at a Saints preseason game -- after he was hired by the NFL. Stropolo was pulled from the assignment while he was on the field pregame, and he would have likely called the game had ESPN not told the NFL about Stropolo's Facebook page.

Now, we have another conflict case -- and if this one is true, it's a major stab at the integrity of the game. On Monday, Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy was talking with Anthony Gargano and Ike Reese of Philly's 94WIP radio when the subject of replacement officials came up.

"During the game, they made like a bad call or something, the ref, and I see Ray Lewis pump his chest up, trying to scare him. Don't you know [the ref] started stuttering? I'm like, 'what's this?!'"

Well, most people would stutter if Ray Lewis was in their face. McCoy then had a more disturbing reveation.

"They're like fans. I'll be honest, they're like fans. One of the refs was talking about his fantasy team, [and said], 'McCoy, come on, I need you for my fantasy [team],' Uhhh, what?"

It's not known who the official was, or if the official was joking, but even the appearance of this kind of impropriety is absolutely ridiculous. The NFL used to have a strict policy against any sort of wagering among its officials for this exact reason; nobody wants the specter of a crooked game hanging over the league's head. Nobody wants an NFL version of Tim Donaghy.

"Gambling is an unacceptable activity for Game Officials in the National Football League," the league's collective bargaining agreement states.  "Such activity constitutes conduct detrimental to the integrity of, and public trust in, the NFL.  Because it is the responsibility of the Game Officials to ensure the fairness of NFL play, including the complete confidence of the fans in the legitimacy of the game, it is critical that NFL Game Officials maintain the appearance of the highest ethical conduct."

But in its rush to replace the officials it locked out, the NFL hasn't been very strong in the vetting process. Replacement official Shannon Eastin was a contestant in the 2007 World Series of Poker, a fact that the league brushed aside. We can't wait to see the NFL try and throw dirt on this story if it's true.
