The Jaguars will play four games overseas – You’re welcome, London

20 Aug
2012
by in Fantasy Football, General

London will become the Jacksonville Jaguars' home away from home, according to Vito Stellino of Jacksonville.com.

The NFL will announce Tuesday that the Jaguars will be playing multiple home games in London starting in 2013, according to the report. Officially, they'll be home games for the Jaguars (four of them, according to the AP), just 4,272 short miles away from Everbank Field in Jacksonville.

From the AP, here's a snippet about why the Jaguars would be desirous of London games.

[Owner Shad] Khan said last year he wanted to create an international fan base for the Jaguars .

''The NFL is going to be developing an international fan base. Why shouldn't it be the Jaguars?'' Khan said in December. ''In all honesty, internationally, they don't know the difference between the Jaguars and the Steelers.''

Enjoy, fellow world citizens! You get the Jaguars, pretty much because you don't know that they're not very good at football. Why waste a good team on you guys? And this ringing endorsement is from the guy who owns the Jags.

Expanding internationally is something upon which the NFL is hellbent, and if it's going to happen, Khan might as well get in there and try to get a foothold on some international popularity (and money). It's smart. Shad Khan is a self-made billionaire, so it's also possible that he knows what he's doing, business-wise.

I guess this makes the Jaguars England's Team, or at least London's Team. I'd apologize for not giving them a better squad, but the Cowboys are America's Team, and I don't recall being consulted on that decision. So you'll get the Jaguars and you'll like it, Londoners.

Peyton Manning shows the work still to be done in home opener

19 Aug
2012

Football isn't just a team game; it's also a game of communication and repetition. You can put a Hall of Fame quarterback together with a group of talented receivers, but until everyone's on the same page, individual pedigrees don't really matter. This was very evident in the Denver Broncos' 30-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Peyton Manning's Invesco Field debut. Manning made some good throws and was very much in command of the offense pre-snap, but circumstances conspired against him more often than not once the action began.

Manning, who played just one drive in the Broncos' preseason opener against the Chicago Bears, went the entire first half on Saturday night. He also took a few hits courtesy of Seattle's opportunistic defense, which has caused turnovers on five of the eight drives it's seen from starting offenses through two games. At this point, it's safe to say that getting up after those hits and continuing to play is the main goal, and everything else is gravy. That said, there were a few warning signs in Manning's performance, in which he went 16 of 23 for 177 yards with two interceptions.

The first pick came in the first quarter, with the Broncos driving for a touchdown. Manning threw from the no-huddle at the Seahawks' 9-yard line, defensive lineman Red Bryant tipped the ball, and linebacker K.J. Wright came down with it. That would seem an oddity, except that Manning appeared to have slight issues with passing height last week, as well. The second pick was a real problem -- Manning threw to tight end Joel Dreessen, but it was a downfield wobbler and at least four Seattle defenders were in the area. Safety Jeron Johnson was the lucky recipient, and it wasn't the first time Manning has been off on the deeper throws.

"Every interception has its own story, [and] nobody really wants to hear it at the end of the day," Manning said after the game. "A quarterback signs the check on every ball that he throws. There's an old saying that the most important part of every play is to possess the ball at the end of that play. That's the quarterback's job. I have to do a better job of that. Two interceptions tonight—two in the red zone two weeks in a row … just can't have it. Tipped balls … whatever it is … just can't have it. I've got to find a way to protect the ball better and ensure we get some kind of points when we're down there in the red zone."

In the end, it's just unwise to expect too much, too soon. Manning is, after all, recovering from four shoulder surgeries in the last three years, and a resulting nerve impingement in his throwing arm. That he's playing at all right now is a testament to his own scorching work ethic, and the Broncos' impressive faith in his future. Manning also made good throws that had bad results, such as the flat-out drop by tight end Jacob Tamme in the end zone near the conclusion of the first half. Tamme was wide open, Manning threaded the needle, and the former Indianapolis Colts teammates just couldn't make it work.

"I didn't see the film," Manning said. "It was an incomplete pass. We got the field goal there. I thought we had good field position. The [unnecessary roughness penalty on center J.D. Walton] put us in a tough spot—first-and-21 from the 21[-yard line] wasn't ideal. [We] got back into decent field position and had a shot at it. Obviously it would have been nice to have a little more time there—have a couple more downs. Jacob Tamme is going to play a huge role for this team this year, and it's not a factor in my mind."

Peyton Manning will obviously play a much larger role for the Broncos this year, but it's also best to exercise patience in waiting for the old No. 18 to return.

"I was pretty pleased with the first half," head coach John Fox concluded. "Other than the 0-3 turnover margin, I thought we did pretty good to take the lead 10-9 before the half. You would have liked it to be better as far as the points because we dropped a couple points off with field position. Again, something to build on and something to get better from."

Giancarlo Stanton’s latest tape-measure home run estimated at 494 feet (Video)

18 Aug
2012

At just 22 years old, Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton has already put together an impressive résumé of tape-measure home runs that could hold up against anyone who has ever played the game — that includes his scoreboard-wrecking grand slam at Marlins Park on May 21.

Stanton's résumé got even better and more majestic during the Marlins' 6-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on Friday night.

Fans seated just to the left of the center field batter's eye and five rows from the concourse probably never believed they would have a chance at a home run in batting practice, let alone during the game when they arrived at the park. Well, guess what? During the sixth inning, Stanton managed to reach their location with a monster big fly estimated by ESPN's True Distance Hit Tracker at 494 feet.

[The Juice: Prince Fielder's two homers power Tigers past Orioles]

Watch as Stanton completely obliterates Josh Roenicke's curveball:

If you closed your eyes and just listened, the sound of the bat followed by the collective "ohhh" from the crowd could paint a pretty accurate picture in your mind. But still, that's a home run that has to be seen to be believed and truly appreciated.

If confirmed at 494 feet, Stanton's home run would would be the longest in Major League Baseball since Wladimir Balentien's 495-foot blast in 2009. But even if the number is brought back closer to the original 474-foot estimation, it would still be the fourth-longest in baseball this season, trailing Cameron Maybin's 485-foot home run on July 2, as well Nelson Cruz (484) and Travis Hafner (481).

I guess for now we'll just have to say Stanton hit the ball really hard and really far until we hear some sort of confirmation on the distance. However, what we can tell you is that Stanton has now homered in all five career games he's played at Coors Field, which equals Jeff Kent's stadium best five-game homer streak for a visiting player.

That's a pretty cool streak. Now just imagine if Stanton wasn't a visiting player.

[Jeff Passan: MLB to test two different advanced replay systems]

From MLB.com:

Asked if he could imagine the numbers he would put up if he played half his games at Coors Field, Stanton smiled and said, "Yeah, I could."

When asked if he cared to be more specific, he said, "No, you guys can use your imagination."

With the Marlins in Denver through Sunday, I think it's safe to say Kent's streak is in real jeopardy. Also, we should definitely be prepared to update Stanton's résumé again, because I think he might be able to reach the concourse — or Wyoming — before he leaves town.

Yeah... my imagination is already running that wild.
