The Juice: Adrian Beltre hits three homers in romp, Chris Sale shuts down Yankees for sweep

2012

The Juice is back for its fifth season of fun! Stop by each weekday for an ample serving of news from the action, plus great photos, stats and video highlights.

Beltre belts three:  Wednesday was the fifth anniversary of the Rangers' historic 30-3 romp over the Orioles, a contest at Camden Yards that set a modern record for runs in a game and arguably serves as the low point in Baltimore's current run of sub-.500 records.

The O's appear to be on their way to exorcising most of those demons, but their fans must have at least suffered some scary flashbacks on Wednesday with the two teams matching up at Rangers Ballpark. Though Texas pulled off the pedal after taking an early nine-run lead, Adrian Beltre did something in the 12-3 victory that no Rangers hitter did during that mega-rout in 2007. The third baseman hit three home runs by the end of the fourth inning, becoming only the fifth player to record a three-homer game in both the regular season and the playoffs. (Beltre did the same deed against the Rays in last year's ALDS. As for that 30-3 game, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ramon Vazquez both hit two homers apiece.)

Beltre had two other chances to hit his fourth home run, which would have equaled a major-league record last reached by teammate Josh Hamilton against Baltimore earlier this season. And he made no bones about his intentions during those last two plate appearances.

''I'm trying to hit a home run,'' Beltre told reporters. ''I got a pitch to hit, too, but I couldn't do it.''

That's probably just as well that he didn't get there, though. No need to open old wounds further.

Super Sale: Chicago's Chris Sale added another sterling effort to his growing Cy Young case, striking out 13 and allowing only one run over  7 2/3 innings in a sweep-sealing 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees. Combined with Tampa Bay's 5-3 win over the Royals, the Yankees' lead in the AL East now stands at just three games, the slimmest margin in almost two months.

San Francisco sweeps: The Giants, meanwhile, are admiring their largest lead in the NL West in over a month after sweeping the Dodgers in Southern California. Wednesday's 8-4 victory was keyed by a career night from Joaquin Arias (3 for 4 with a homer and five RBIs) and a typically strong performance from Matt Cain that joined similar starts by Madison Bumgarner and Tim Lincecum. San Francisco is 5-2 since the Melky Cabrera suspension was announced.

Atlanta avoids one: With his team facing a sweep and a potential eight-game deficit in the NL East, Braves pitcher Kris Medlen stepped up with seven shutout innings in a 5-1 win over Washington.

Quote of the day

"I wasn't going to let him get the loss. He'd done his job."

— Arizona manager Kirk Gibson on removing rookie pitcher Tyler Skaggs after 6 2/3 innings of work. The 21-year-old actually ended up earning a victory in his first career start as the D-Backs beat the Marlins 3-2 in the first game of the first doubleheader in Chase Field history. (They won the nightcap 3-0, too.)

Photo of the day: Cool threads

The Reds and Phillies both wore great throwback uniforms as part of "Nineties Night" at Citizens Bank Park. Here's Jay Bruce looking good and feeling good after hitting a home run during Cincinnati's 3-2 win.

Three facts for the water cooler

• Andrew McCutchen went 3 for 15 as the Pirates were swept in San Diego. That brings his NL-leading batting average down to .349, just ahead of Melky Cabrera's .346.

• The Cardinals took a half-game lead in the NL wild-card race over Pittsburgh with a 4-2 win over Houston. Kyle Lohse is 7-0 with a 2.21 ERA in his last 12 starts.

• Jose Valverde recorded his 100th save in a Tigers uniform in a 3-2 win over Toronto.

The Juice: Pirates fall in 10 on Chase Headley homer, Nationals extend lead on Braves as Stephen Strasburg’s innings grow

22 Aug
2012
by David Brown in Fantasy Baseball, General

The Juice is back for its fifth season of fun! Stop by each weekday for an ample serving of news from the action, plus great photos, stats and video highlights.

McCutchen giveth, McCutchen taketh away: An inning after Andrew McCutchen saved the Pittsburgh Pirates with a breathtaking running catch, his non-relation Daniel McCutchen hung a change-up to San Diego's Chase Headley, who crushed it deep into the right-field grandstand at Petco Park for a two-run home run and a 7-5 victory Tuesday night. Perhaps walking Headley to set up a double play against Carlos Quentin would have been the better play for the Bucs, who fell 7 1/2 games behind the Reds in the NL Central. Overall, it was an excruciating experience for the Pirates, who had tied the score with two outs in the ninth on a two-run homer by Garrett Jones. His heroics made up for shaky play and strange decisions by manager Clint Hurdle.

145 1/3: That's how many innings Stephen Strasburg has accumulated this season after a 10-strikeout performance that helped the Washington Nationals beat the Braves 4-1 and extend D.C.'s lead in the NL East to seven games. How much is left for Strasburg, who reportedly will be shut down well before he reaches 200 innings as part of his recovery from Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery in 2010?

Perfectly fine follow-up: In front of nearly 40,000 fans at Safeco Field, in his first start since throwing a perfect game, Seattle's Felix Hernandez did not quite go all Johnny Vander Meer (plus) on the Cleveland Indians. He was dominant, as he often is, allowing a run and seven hits over 7 2/3 innings in a 5-1 victory. From the Associated Press:

Seattle has won 14 of 15 at home and Hernandez improved to 8-0 with a 1.53 ERA over his last 13 starts. He left to a long ovation with two outs in the eighth after throwing 105 pitches. It was the final moment in a night where nearly every move Hernandez made was greeted by noise.

Dueling mound men: Kansas City's Luke Hochevar and Tampa Bay's David Price matched zeroes for eight innings before the Royals broke through for an unearned run in the 10th on a two-out RBI single blooped by Eric Hosmer. And that was it: Royals win 1-0. Hochevar, the top overall pick of the 2006 draft, allowed one hit and struck out 10 in what had to be the best performance of his career. Price, the top pick in '07, allowed three hits and struck out eight.

Great for Nate: Nate McLouth keyed an Orioles rally for the second time in three days, hitting a two-run home run in a 5-3 victory against the Rangers. Chris Tillman turned in a solid start for the Orioles, who closed within five games of the first-place Yankees, who fell again at Chicago.

Athletics turn triple play in Brett Anderson’s return (Video)

22 Aug
2012
by David Brown in Fantasy Baseball, General

Brett Anderson looked lean and mean in his return from Tommy John surgery, and the Oakland Athletics celebrated by winning with the help of any pitcher's true best friend: A triple play.

Anderson allowed a run and four hits with six strikeouts and no walks over seven innings in a 4-1 victory against the Twins that also featured the A's debut of shortstop Stephen Drew and an around-the-horn triple play.

Drew went 0 for 4 at the plate and wasn't involved in the triple play, which was started by third baseman Josh Donaldson on a one-hop grounder hit by Minnesota's Trevor Plouffe in the fifth inning. Adam Rosales made a great jumping pivot at second and completed the triple with a strong throw to first baseman Chris Carter. It was the 21st triple play in A's history and the first since Randy Velarde turned an unassisted one against the Yankees in 2000.

''J.D. got rid of it really quick and got it to me,'' Rosales said. ''I saw Plouffe and I had a couple steps to get him and just let it go as quick as I could. That was pretty sweet.''

(Sidebar: The around-the-horn triple play ought to be renamed "The Gary Gaetti" of the Twins for that time he started two triple plays in one game against the Red Sox in 1990.)

Anderson was impressed, too.

''I've never seen a triple play in person, let alone be on the mound for it, so it's pretty awesome,'' Anderson said. ''It kind of propelled me for the last two innings.''

Despite the efficiency and elegance of a 5-4-3 triple play, Anderson still was the star of the night.

Anderson hadn't been on a major-league mound since June 2011. The next month, he was having elbow ligament replacement surgery in his left arm. But he looked great against the Twins, even before throwing a pitch. Along with his rehab, Anderson dropped 25 pounds. At age 24 and healthy, his career is ready to take off. He threw 86 pitches — 62 for strikes — against Minnesota.

''Anderson really didn't give us much of a chance,'' Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said. ''He had a lot of life on his ball. It shows that he did everything he needed to do to get ready.''

And how nice of his teammates to greet him with the gift of a triple play. Those guys obviously care.
