Ravens receiver Torrey Smith’s brother dies in motorcycle accident

23 Sep
2012

The Baltimore Ravens may be without second-year wide receiver Torrey Smith for tonight's game against the New England Patriots after Smith's younger brother Tevin was killed in a motorcycle accident early Sunday morning.

Smith left the team's hotel early Sunday morning to be with his family, but according to Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com has told head coach John Harbaugh that he will  play against the Patriots. The Ravens will reportedly leave the decision on whether or not to play up to Smith, who has four receptions for 108 yards in two games this season.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Torrey Smith after the passing of his brother, Tevin," the Ravens announced on their official Twitter page.

"This is devastatingly sad, sad news," Harbaugh said on Sunday morning. "Torrey and his family are a close, special family, and our hearts and thoughts reach out to all of them. Our hearts ache today. We pray for Tevin, his mother, Torrey and the rest of the family. God bless Tevin."

[Also: Brett Favre sees public evidence against Saints as 'just hearsay']

As the oldest of seven children, Smith helped care for his younger siblings while his mother balanced attending community college during the day and working at night. Smith discussed his upbringing at the 2011 Scouting Combine.

"Yes, I was the oldest of seven. It had its ups and downs," Smith said. "I was always with my family. There were certain times when other kids would be able to go and have fun doing something, and I had responsibility. But that's something I would not take back."

Our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences go out to Torrey Smith and his family after this terrible tragedy.

Steven Jackson, Greg Jennings headline the NFL’s Week 3 injury report

22 Sep
2012

Here's your weekly spin around the NFL injury situations we'll be monitoring all day Sunday and on Monday night.

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson is regarded as game-time decision after being listed as "questionable" with a groin injury that sidelined him for much of last week's win over the Washington Redskins. Jackson has been remarkably durable throughout his career, playing through ailments that would sideline most players, so it would not be a surprise if he gives it a go. If not, rookie Daryl Richardson will get the bulk of the carries in the backfield against the Chicago Bears, who will be without running back Matt Forte (ankle) and has defensive end Julius Peppers listed as "probable" with a foot injury.

On Sunday night, the New England Patriots will be without tight end Aaron Hernandez (ankle) and have three starting offensive linemen — Logan Mankins, Dan Connolly, Sebastian Vollmer — listed as "questionable" with various ailments. The Baltimore Ravens are much healthier, with right tackle Jah Reid (ankle) the only player who could miss the game due to injury. Reid, who has missed the first two weeks of the season, is listed as "doubtful".

The biggest injury question heading into Monday night's game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks is Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings, who missed last Thursday night's win over the Chicago Bears with a groin injury. Jennings was able to practice on Friday and Saturday and is listed as "questionable" on the final injury report of the week. The Seattle Seahawks could be without wide receiver Doug Baldwin, who injured his shoulder during this week and is listed "questionable" on the injury report.

On Saturday, the New York Jets downgraded tight end Dustin Keller from "questionable" to "out" with a hamstring injury he suffered in the season-opener and kept him out of last week's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Keller led the Jets in receptions and receiving yards, but has just one catch for seven yards in 2012, which is the final year of his rookie contract. With Keller out, Jeff Cumberland and Konrad Reuland will continue to see increased playing time in Tony Sparano's offense.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will continue to play without several key members on defense, as linebacker James Harrison (knee) and safety Troy Polamalu (calf) will miss tomorrow's game against the Oakland Raiders. Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall was a full participant for another week of practices, but is less than 10 months removed from ACL surgery and the club appears content to not rush him back to action. Oakland will be without right tackle Khalif Barnes and starting cornerback Shawntae Spencer, with middle linebacker Rolando McClain (concussion), defensive tackle Richard Seymour (knee) and kicker Sebastian Janikowski (left groin) among several Raiders listed as "questionable".

San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews is listed as "questionable" after missing most of the preseason and first two weeks of the regular season with a broken collarbone. Mathews is expected to make his 2012 debut on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. The Chargers offense will get an additional boost from the return of tight end Antonio Gates, who missed last week's win over the Tennessee Titans with a rib injury.

For the Falcons, right tackle Tyson Clabo (hip) and outside linebacker Sean Weatherspoon (thigh) are once again listed as "questionable", but as they did on Monday night against the Denver Broncos, are expected to play against the Chargers on Sunday afternoon.

The Cincinnati Bengals could be without No. 1 cornerback Leon Hall when they face Robert Griffin and the Washington Redskins in RG3's home debut. A calf injury had Hall limited on Wednesday and kept him out of Thursday and Friday's practice. Officially, Hall is listed as "questionable", but should be regarded as a game-time decision. The Bengals' secondary will also be without 2012 first round cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, who has yet to play this season due to a knee injury, but may get a reprieve as Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon is listed as "doubtful" with a foot injury that kept him out of last week's 31-28 loss to the St. Louis Rams. Like Hall, Garcon will test his foot before the game and a final determination won't be known until inactive lists are due 90 minutes before kickoff.

After playing without 75 percent of their starting secondary in last Sunday night's loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the Detroit Lions are getting closer to full strength in the back-end of their defense as starting cornerbacks Dwight Bentley and Chris Houston are listed as "probable". Safety Louis Delmas, the leader of the group, is "doubtful" with a knee injury and will be a game-time decision for Sunday's game against the Titans, who will be without starting middle linebacker Colin McCarthy, who will miss a second straight game with an ankle injury.

A quartet of Indianapolis Colts are listed as "questionable" on this week's report, including outside linebacker Dwight Freeney, who is battling a high ankle sprain that had him inactive for last week's win over the Minnesota Vikings. Other Colts regarded as "50-50" to play are defensive end Cory Redding, center Samson Satele and guard/center Mike McGlynn.

The Kansas City Chiefs are banged up as they head south to face the New Orleans Saints. Tight end Kevin Boss and cornerback Jacques Reeves were ruled "out", while guard Ryan Lilja (back), wide receiver/running back Dexter McCluster (shoulder) and safety Kendrick Lewis (shoulder) are "questionable". Five Chiefs were listed a "probable", including running back Jamaal Charles. By comparison, the Saints are the much healthier club, missing Turk McBride (out, ankle) and possibly playing without wide receiver Marques Colston, who is "questionable" with a foot injury.

There's a shortage of wide receivers on the Philadelphia Eagles, who enter a battle with the equally unbeaten Arizona Cardinals without Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper. The Eagles will also be without left tackle King Dunlap, which means Demetress Bell gets to face what is arguably the best 3-4 defensive line in football. In addition to having the same record, the Cardinals are in worse shape, injury-wise.

Quarterback John Skelton (ankle) is one of six Cardinals who are listed as "questionable". Also on that list are right guard Adam Snyder (elbow), tight end Todd Heap (knee), safety Adrian Wilson (ankle, groin) and backup safeties Rashad Johnson and James Sanders, two core members of the Cardinals' special teams units as each player has played in 66.13 percent of Arizona's special teams snaps this season.
