Making no progress with Mike Wallace, might the Steelers turn to Plaxico Burress?

07 Aug
2012
by in Fantasy Football, General

Mike Wallace will not be walking through the Pittsburgh Steelers' training camp door anytime soon. That's what I take from these comments from Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert, who says the Steelers and Mike Wallace aren't even in contact.

Colbert was recently on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh. Here's what he shared about Wallace, via Sports Radio Interviews:

"Yeah, there's really no contact. Mike knows where things stand. The next step for him really is to report and to sign his tender, and until that happens, there won't be anything else. And if that happens, nobody knows where it will go from there. So that's where it is and has been, and hopefully it comes to an end sooner rather than later because it will be good for us, but it will also be good for Mike."

"Mike" evidently disagrees, because he hasn't shown up, and doesn't appear to have any intention of signing that tender. The Steelers, as Colbert makes clear, have no intention of giving Wallace the deal he wants. In fact, they gave the contract they originally offered to Wallace to Antonio Brown, instead.

That leaves a hole at wide receiver, and might that mean that the Steelers would look in the direction of free agent Plaxico Burress?

Tuesday morning, that was on the mind of Ed Bouchette, the intrepid Steelers reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He tweeted this:

Plaxico Burress has a big back tax bill. He is unemployed. The #Steelers need a wide receiver to replace Mike Wallace. I'm told Burress wants "too much money" but something has to give and it doesnt look as though Wallace will give in any time soon.

Plax's tax bill was reported Monday by TMZ. He apparently owes the government over $59,000 in back taxes. A veteran's minimum contract would easily cover that, and I'm a little taken aback that Plaxico thinks someone's going to give him anything more than that. Plaxico holding out for a big contract seems only slightly less absurd than Cousin Eddie holding out for a management position.

Even at the veteran's minimum, it's hard to see the Steelers doing this. Plaxico isn't a replacement for Mike Wallace, because Wallace and Burress have about polar opposite skill sets. What is it that Mike Wallace does that Plaxico Burress can replace?

Burress in addition to Wallace makes a little bit of sense (though it still seems a very un-Steeler thing to do), but as a replacement, it makes none. Red zone help is one thing; taking playing time away from Emmanuel Sanders, Antonio Brown or even Toney Clemons is quite another. The Steelers have always been more of a "let's go with what we have" kind of operation.

Burress back in the black and gold would be interesting, but I won't believe it until I see it.

Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick compares the NFL to ‘The Bachelor’

06 Aug
2012

And I'll take "Headlines I never thought I'd write" for $500, Alex...

Yes, it's true. In a recent interview with Buffalo station 550 WGR, Bills starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said that the process of getting on the same page with his receivers is very much like the ABC reality show "The Bachelor." Asked about Derek Hagan's comment that it takes time, meetings and reps for quarterbacks and their pass-catchers to understand each other, and with the interviewer saying that receivers might try to get him to like them by giving him extra attention, Fitzpatrick went there with his response.

"I think it is very true," he said. "Right when I got to Buffalo, I would have given my first impression rose to Stevie Johnson. That's one of those things that you don't really see on 'The Bachelor.' Somebody winning it from day one on. It's like you're dating all these different guys and you are trying to form these relationships on the field with these guys trying to get their moves down, trying to get my points across of where I want them to be. It's hard when you have that many guys that run the routes that many different ways. A lot of times I have to give them an expectation of where they need to be at particular times in their route."

It's especially difficult in Buffalo -- under head coach and offensive mastermind Chan Gailey, the Bills run more 4- and 5-receiver sets than any other team. So, Fitzpatrick is evidently exploring his pre-snap options in more ways than one.

What about those treasured "one-on-one" days with his receivers? After all, this is where many prospective mates make up valuable ground with Bachelors and Bachelorettes -- when the mob fades away.

"One of our media guys does a great job with that, but as a quarterback I think this is a great analogy. Because as quarterback when you are 'The Bachelor,' all of a sudden you have those 25 girls and those 25 girls are almost forced to like you. They have to try to be friendly with you. That's how my receivers are too. I don't know if they really like me or not, but they have to act like it. They are trying to win me over. We have a lot of fun with that group, though."

At the risk of admitting that we actually did watch the last season of "The Bachelorette," it might be more appropriate to compare Fitzpatrick to Jef Holm, the Utah entrepreneur who pulled off quite the little upset by winning the heart of the darling Emily Maynard, and leapfrogging a bunch of supposedly hunkier fellas in doing so.

Fitzpatrick was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2005 NFL draft out of Harvard, and wasn't expected to do much in the NFL. He threw 135 passes in his rookie season, tallied up eight interceptions to just four touchdowns, and didn't get to throw a single NFL pass in his next two seasons. Fitzpatrick got more reps with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2008 and 2009, but it wasn't until he came to Buffalo in 2010 that his touchdown total exceeded the number of picks he threw.

In 2010 and 2011 under Gailey, Fitzpatrick established himself as a reasonably productive NFL quarterback, though he did lead the league in interceptions last season. Where he really cashed in was in the contract department -- in late October of 2011, the Bills gave Fitzpatrick a seven-year, $62.195 million contract with $24 million guaranteed and a $10 million signing bonus. Not exactly what was expected of an Ivy League quarterback and former almost-NFL washout.

So, sure -- we'll roll with the Bachelor comparison. Why not? Everybody loves the underdog...

Sorry, Cardinals fans: Kevin Kolb is still Kevin Kolb

06 Aug
2012
by in Fantasy Football, General

The Arizona Cardinals didn't do much to upgrade the quarterback position this offseason. The improvement would come, they were hoping, from the increased health, comfort and efficiency of one Kevin Kolb. The team gave Kolb a six-year, $65 million contract before the 2011 season, but Kolb played in just nine games and struggled throughout his first season as an NFL starter.

The idea was that in his second year in Ken Whisenhunt's system, Kolb would pay dividends by running a more dynamic offense.

By that standard, Sunday night's Hall of Fame Game was a disaster. The New Orleans Saints beat the Cardinals, 17-10, in the 2012 preseason opener at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio. Kolb completed one pass for 4 yards and had an interception.

Kolb looked uncomfortable and inefficient before leaving the game injured. His first pass was intercepted. Kolb was looking for Andre Roberts on a 10-yard out that didn't seem to have nearly the necessary velocity. Malcolm Jenkins stepped in front of it and picked it.

Two incompletions followed, and then Kolb, with the pocket collapsing, ran for his life in his own end zone before unloading a short, desperate completion to fullback Anthony Sherman. Kolb suffered a bruised rib on the play and didn't come back.

Then, on the way off the field, he may or may not have snubbed John Skelton on an attempted fist bump. I'll give Kolb the benefit of the doubt on that one and say he didn't see Skelton until it was too late for knuckle bumping. So there's a positive, Cards fans. Kolb might not be very good, but he also might not be a complete jerk. Optimism!

John Skelton looked much better than Kolb in relief. He only threw six passes, so you might want to hold off on ordering that Skelton jersey, but he was the better quarterback. Clearly, there's still work to be done in determining who's the better option for the Cards here. Kolb should be back on the field soon enough, so they'll get to compete some more.

Of course, all of this comes with the standard preseason disclaimer: It's the preseason, it doesn't mean anything, you can't draw any conclusions from it, etc. I think that applies more to preseason success, though. If you look really good in preseason, there's no guarantee that you'll look good when things get real. Poor play usually translates pretty well, though.
