Since Tim Duncan was drafted over 15 years ago, the San Antonio Spurs have remained hilariously staid, seemingly going out of their way to make routine and respected "Spurs moves" while remaining a constant championship contender for the last decade and a half. In a somewhat shocking bit of derring-do, the team announced earlier in the month that it would be soon unveiling alternate jerseys to wear at times during the 2012-13 season. For a team that has only worn black and white since the 1996-97 season, the news was as jarring as San Antonio Spurs news typically gets.

Then the unis hit, on Wednesday. And they're … well, they're pretty simple. They're cool, we like the gray and the throwback spur on the front that reminds of the team's old ABA uniforms, but these are some simple duds. Borderline practice jerseys, if you will. Then again, the San Antonio Spurs have always been about practice, practice, and practice; so it sort of makes sense.

More examples follow after the jump.

Really, with only black and white to work with (and thankfully not the teal-dotted southwestern style that ruined many a child's David Robinson T-shirt in the mid-1990s), there wasn't a whole heck of a lot the Spurs could do, and the simplistic plan was executed well.

The jerseys will debut at the team's home opener on Nov. 1, and make 11 other appearances throughout the 2012-13 season.

Tim Duncan lives his life a quarter-mile at a time, apparently (VIDEO)

05 Sep
2012

First, pictures popped up last week showing San Antonio Spurs big man Tim Duncan smiling in a Chevy Corvette Z06 at Exotics Racing, a performance driving school in Las Vegas that gives average Joes (and, it seems, four-time NBA champions) the chance to drive Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, Porsches and a host of other top-shelf vehicles on their private race track. Then, via Project Spurs, came this video that allegedly showed Duncan driving a Nissan GT-R during a drag race at San Antonio Speedway at speeds upward of 120 miles per hour:

... but given the fact that the video was shot from alongside the racetrack, it was impossible to confirm that it was, in fact, "The Big Fundamental" behind the wheel.

This video, though — posted by San Antonio's BlackJack Speed Shop, shared by r/nba user Redbutter and criminally unavailable for embed here because of the dubstep song used as its soundtrack — eliminates any doubt: Tim Duncan, clearly visible in the driver's seat with a helmet on and saying he's got to "get [his] reaction time up" before pulling off, likes to go fast.

It's not news that, like a lot of well-off pro athletes, Duncan digs cars — a few years back, he had the folks at Hennessey Performance drop a supercharged Hemi into his 2008 Dodge Challenger, amping it up to a 600-horsepower beast. Nor is it news that, like fellow long-in-the-tooth player (and NBA rookie) Pablo Prigioni, he likes to collect them — Duncan has said in the past that he loves 1950s and '60s American muscle.

But it does seem a bit concerning that he's driving high-performance cars super-fast, because even in a controlled setting, there's only so much control a non-professional driver can exert over something going 120-plus miles per hour. And, from the Spurs' perspective, because Duncan's less than two months into a new three-year, $30 million contract that will pay him to continue being San Antonio's low-post centerpiece through his 39th birthday. Maybe that contract has a "for love of the road" clause in it, but that seems unlikely ... and while, as MySanAntonio.com's Dan McCarney notes, it's not like Gregg Popovich is going to cut the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, you have to imagine that the Spurs front office (and fans) wouldn't be thrilled at seeing the face of their franchise getting his Vin Diesel on.

A modest proposal, Tim: Radio-controlled car racing. It's much more in line with your famed D&D/Merlin-loving hobbyist instincts, it'll eliminate the possibility of a wreck-induced injury, and it'll give you a chance to chill with Brad Miller. Everyone wins!

Tim Duncan cut his paycheck in half, so that his San Antonio Spurs could remain whole

26 Jul
2012

There are unfortunate realities that capped-out NBA teams have to suffer through as they head from one capped-out season to the next. Changing the face of a franchise is no easy task When attempting to switch personnel while over the salary cap, you're more or less stuck with what you had last season. Luckily for the San Antonio Spurs, they finished last season with Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker. And, luckily for Spurs fans, Duncan's willingness to cut his pay in half next season will allow the team to keep all three and retain help for the aging trio.

The massive pay cut Duncan took likely represents the last contract of his NBA career — from $21.16 million in 2011-12 to $9.65 million in 2012-13. It's a move that helps the Spurs vie for a championship in his waning years nearly as much as Duncan's play helped win titles at his  peak.

And it didn't go unnoticed by the great Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News:

After being the third-highest paid player in the league last season, behind only Lakers star Kobe Bryant ($25.24 million) and Boston's Kevin Garnett ($21.25 million), Duncan next season will be the fourth-highest paid Spur.

[…]

A two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, the 36-year-old Duncan will see his salary rise to $10.36 million for the 2013-14 season. The team captain is guaranteed $10 million for the 2014-15 season, but he has an opt-out clause.

Duncan's pay cut had been expected, but few thought he would agree to a drop as significant as this.

The dip was more or less sealed when San Antonio made a surprising trade-deadline deal in March to acquire former Spur (and, it should be noted, formerly disgruntled) Stephen Jackson, and his $10.6 million salary. Retaining Duncan with a double-figure salary would place four different Spurs (alongside Ginobili and Parker) in that realm, and that's just not good business sense.

Because a cap is a cap. And even if the Spurs wanted to go all out and dive into luxury tax territory, their flexibility in acquiring players would be greatly reduced.

Money matters to the Spurs, who rarely pay the tax. Duncan's new deal let the team re-sign guard Danny Green, keep Boris Diaw, take advantage of the last year of Jackson's time with the Spurs, re-sign Patty Mills and add 2009 pick Nando De Colo -- who you can trust is a real person because Mike Monroe wouldn't lead us astray.

Duncan's contract also puts the team in a good spot next summer, when it's time to extend Manu Ginobili's contract, and possibly match offers for center Tiago Splitter, who will become a restricted free agent.

None of this cinches the fifth ring of Duncan's illustrious career. But with sound spending and a deep squad the Spurs have a chance. And because Duncan wasn't offended that the Spurs asked that he not approximate his last contract, he'll have a happy and deep team to work with.

Seems a fair tradeoff for all involved.
