Pacers center Roy Hibbert goes ‘Gangnam Style’ at an Indianapolis mall’s food court (VIDEO)

22 Oct
2012

Frankly, after a lockout-induced offseason spent chronicling the incessant planking of NBA types a year ago, we were hoping the "Gangnam Style"-fad would fade out by the time the NBA's regular season started up in late October. The odd offseason chronicle isn't the worst thing, but the last thing we want to do is take in an endless amount of post-dunk Gangnam celebrations in the way our mates at Shutdown Corner have had to do with the NFL's celebrations.

Then Indiana Pacer Roy Hibbert, as he always seems to do, goes and makes it fun for everyone.

Hibbert and some pals from the Pacers' cheering crew "Area 55" (so named for Roy's uniform number) put together a flash mob at a downtown Indianapolis mall on Sunday, spiraling out of nowhere to Gangnam it up; with Roy looking especially resplendent in a white suit that he told Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears he had especially designed for the performance. Watch:

The Pacers are fun, and they're going to win a ton of games this year. And now the next step is to turn all of those blue Indianapolis Colts t-shirts, as lined up outside Sbarro's, into gold and blue Roy Hibbert unis.

Spanish king set video for Ryder drama: Garcia (Reuters)

22 Oct
2012

Team Europe golfer Sergio Garcia (R) of Spain holds the Ryder Cup with captain Jose Maria Olazabal after the closing ceremony of the 39th Ryder Cup at the Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois, September 30, 2012.

TOKYO (Reuters) - The King of Spain had his video recorder set up so as not to miss the last day of Europe's epic Ryder Cup tussle with the United States, Sergio Garcia told Reuters on Monday. The 32-year-old Garcia said he has found himself glued to the screen, just like friends not remotely interested in golf, to watch re-runs of Europe's stunning triumph in Chicago last month. "The week after when I watched the replays I was still getting goosebumps," the Spaniard said in a telephone interview. "It was amazing to relive some of those moments. ...

Chris Johnson sighting: Titans back shows off his old CJ2K form (VIDEO)

21 Oct
2012

There are moments where Chris Johnson reminds everyone he's the NFL record holder in yards from scrimmage in a season.

Those moments have been far and few in between, but against Buffalo the 2009 version of Johnson showed up. The Titans running back scored a 16-yard touchdown early to break a scoring drought that dated back to Dec. 4 of last year, when he scored two against ... the Bills. Needless to say, the expensive free-agent additions to the Bills defense haven't helped much.

But it was Johnson's next run that was a throwback to the CJ2K days.

Johnson took a handoff right, cut back and found a crease, then outran the Bills secondary. He was pulling away, showing he still has that elite speed that made him one of the best running backs in the NFL a few years ago, and had enough of a lead to turn his head at the 20-yard line and taunt the Buffalo defenders on his way into the end zone. After that run, Johnson had 104 yards on five carries.

It was vintage Chris Johnson. Finally.

Johnson finished with 195 rushing yards to lead Tennessee to a 35-34 win. Buffalo, the darlings of the offseason after signing ends Mario Williams and Mark Anderson, is a disappointing 3-4 after the home loss.

VIDEO: Ricky Stenhouse wins Kansas Nationwide race in hectic fuel mileage finish

21 Oct
2012

Kyle Busch was oh-so-close to getting his first Nationwide Series victory for his own Kyle Busch Motorsports team on Saturday afternoon at Kansas Speedway.

After the race was extended because of a late crash, many cars near the front of the field were pushing the limits of their fuel tanks. Busch was one of them, and it looked like he was going to grab that first win as he led Ricky Stenhouse to the line as the white flag waved.

However, Busch started to wiggle his car back and forth on the backstretch of the final lap, and in turn 3, his car ran dry, allowing Stenhouse to pass him for the race win.

Saturday's race featured 12 cautions, including one when Stenhouse made contact with Joey Logano. Will we see that type of action on Sunday? We'll find out soon.

Robin Lehner gets ejected for goalie fight, Binghamton Senators blow 5-0 lead, lose in OT (VIDEO)

20 Oct
2012

Binghamton Senators goaltender Robin Lehner is no stranger to dropping the blocker and the glove and scrapping with an opponent. His fiery temper has given us some memorable moments over the past few years.

On Saturday night, Lehner added another fight to his belt taking on Riku Helenius of the Syracuse Crunch while the Senators enjoyed a comfortable 5-0 second period lead. Here's the entire brouhaha, thanks to HockeyFights.com:

For his trouble, Lehner ended up with a game misconduct and was ejected with 10:30 left in the second period. In came Nathan Lawson, and that's when things fell apart. Syracuse would score twice in the second period, three times in the third and then Richard Panik potted home the overtime winner to complete the stunning comeback.

After the game, Senators head coach Luke Richardson hoped his netminder could keep his temper under control in the future, something that was provoked by some crease crashing by the Crunch. From the Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin:

"I think there's always excitement when goalies fight but he's here to stop the puck and that's what he did well in the first half of the game. He's a fiery guy but he has to manage that and we have to help him manage that. We have to keep guys away from slamming into him."

The gamesheet, as you would imagine, is quite long (hey, a Hugh Jessiman sighting!) and as you'll see, the entire game was chippy with 152 penalty minutes handed out in total.

Watch Alex Ovechkin shatter a pane of KHL glass with his head (VIDEO)

20 Oct
2012

Alex Ovechkin is a large man and he hits with a great deal of force. On Saturday, Atlant Moscow forward Alexei Mikhnov experienced this phenomenon firsthand.

A split-second later, so did a pane of glass. And, judging by the way it shattered from fairly harmless contact with the big Russian winger, it's a wonder Mikhnov's nostrils didn't shoot clouds of dust from his bones exploding. Here's what happens when Alex Ovechkin meets KHL glass:

Holy cow, what is Ovechkin's helmet made of? High-pitched frequency?

The shattered pane wasn't the only thing that needed cleaning up. Ovechkin left the game briefly so that the Dynamo medical staff could sweep away the shards of glass in his equipment and bandage up a massive gash on his hand.

[More NHL: Donald Fehr addresses 'greedy' player myth]

When Ovechkin headed to the KHL a month ago, he made the ominous suggestion that he just might stay there if his salary was reduced. We called it an empty threat, citing the fact that a) his salary came from a contract and b) his sponsors weren't paying for him to play in Russia. But this clip gives us another reason.

Anyone who watches Ovechkin on the regular knows he really, really enjoys leaping into the glass, back-first. It's his jam. But as it turns out, KHL glass isn't quite as conducive to Ovechkin's signature celebration. Heck, you can't even back into it.

Watch Capitals prospect Filip Forsberg score pretty goal, break glass celebrating (VIDEO)

18 Oct
2012

Leksand of Sweden's HockeyAllsvenskan (second division) fell behind to BIK Karlskoga Wednesday 2-0 by the end of the second period. It was a meeting between two of the top clubs in the league this season and it ended with a three-goal third-period comeback for Leksand, including the game-winner coming with five seconds left from former NHLer Mattias Timander.

Kicking off the comeback was Filip Forsberg, the No. 11 overall selection by the Washington Capitals in June. The 18-year-old's seventh goal of the season came off a lovely toe drag around a Karlskoga defenseman. The goal was nice, but his celebration needs a little work:

It's wasn't quite as spectacular as New Jersey high schooler Taylor Cox or even Henrik Andersen, formerly of Leksand, but at least Forsberg was spared the embarrassment of actually crashing through the glass. The pane was quickly fixed and Leksand took over first place in the league with its win.

Kevin Love rewards Nikola Pekovic’s block with awesome no-look lefty dime in Wolves preseason win (VIDEO)

17 Oct
2012

See, now, that's just smart team leadership. When your center engulfs an opponent's shot, forces a turnover, starts a break and runs the floor, it's just good policy to repay his effort with a feed ... especially when he is a muscular, gangstrous giant like Nikola Pekovic, who will grind your bones to make his bread if you get on his bad side. If you can do it with a ridiculous mid-air one-touch redirect, as Kevin Love does here with Andrei Kirilenko's just off-target lead pass, then so much the better ... especially during a preseason game, when fans who pay for the privilege of watching the principled opposition of Maccabi Haifa should be entertained as much as possible. And hey, who needs to sleep properly on their right arm when you can do this with your left?

Great work all around, Minnesota Timberwolves. I know your chemistry's still a work in progress, but that work sure seemed like it was progressing nicely on Tuesday night.

[Fantasy Basketball '12: Play the official game of NBA.com]

Love had 24 points, eight rebounds and two assists, including this honey of a setup, in 31 minutes of play to lead Minnesota to a 114-81 win over the visiting Israeli club. Pekovic finished with 10 points and nine rebounds in 26 minutes.

See the glory of the best of ‘NBA Inside Stuff’ (VIDEO)

16 Oct
2012

NBC's "NBA Inside Stuff' was designed and created in 1990 to appeal directly to someone exactly like me — a 10-year-old NBA freak that was too old for cartoons but not too jaded to take in the commissioner-approved, light re-tellings of the NBA week that was. The jaded part came later, but not before "main man" became a go-to joke amongst its ardent watchers, and Ahmad Rashad's pronunciation of "FRI-DAY!" became an immovable part of every NBA fan's lexicon, some two decades later.

This is why Oakley & Allen's two-part greatest hits package, featuring the best of the show, is necessary viewing. Even in an era when "SportsCenter" highlights and the introduction of numerous clip shows made it easier to follow a Sprewell or a McDyess off in some faraway climate, the weekly collection was a needed salve to NBA fans in the pre-Internet days. Even if, as teens, we were way over that, maaaan.

Via The Basketball Jones, here's the first installment:

And the second:

And you're now allowed to cry for joy in response to a youth well spent.

Ivan Johnson shatters backboard during Hawks practice, reacts to it in very Ivan Johnson way (VIDEO)

15 Oct
2012

After a six-point preseason loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night, the Atlanta Hawks traveled to the gym at Butler University in Indianapolis on Monday morning, eager to correct some mistakes and continue preparing for the regular season. But before the clock struck noon on the East Coast, according to the team's Twitter feed (and, subsequently, Hawks teammates Mike Scott, Al Horford, James Anderson and Anthony Tolliver, as well as Hawks player development instructor Nick Van Exel), practice was called on account of extreme violence against plexiglas. Behold:

The perpetrator of this glass-shattering (which we'd have to imagine the folks at Butler aren't super thrilled about)? None other than Ivan Johnson, Atlanta's diamond-grill-rockin', non-NBA-watchin', rough-and-tumble-shot-destroyin', Celtics-fan-bird-flippin' power forward, who appeared pretty much out of nowhere last season and became an Internet fan favorite due in large part to his combination of physicality and plain-spoken awesomeness.

After the shattered backboard gave us the physicality, it was time for the plain-spoken awesomeness. Ivan, naturally, did not disappoint:

"Ehh, it's just the way I work out. I work out hard," a totally nonplussed Johnson said when asked what happened. "In everything we do."

The glass-breaking was a first for Johnson, whose years-long journey — from Pac-10 prospect to Division II beast, from banned in Korea to D-League standout, from grinding it out in China to an NBA call-up — has been the stuff of legend. (He does note, however, that he has "knocked some screws out before.")

So Ivan, given the rarity of the event and the accomplishment of dunking with enough ferocity to end practice, feel like commemorating the occasion with a photo?

"No," he said with a dismissive laugh. "Probably not. It's nothing."

Of course it isn't. Please continue being awesome, Ivan Johnson. As if you could ever do anything else.

Video via the Hawks' official YouTube channel. Hat-tip on the breakage to NBA.com's John Schuhmann.
