It is very well known that the working relationship between star center Dwight Howard and head coach Stan Van Gundy did not end well in Orlando. SVG said that Howard was trying to get him fired, Howard issued several complaints that SVG would make his actions public, Van Gundy was fired, and Dwight left in trade. All things considered, it was pretty much the worst possible resolution to the issues.

On the bright side, not all has been lost in the relationship between the two men. Currently, they're teaming up to do substantive good for Florida schools. From Mike Bianchi for the Orlando Sentinel (via EOB):

If you read my column last week, you know Van Gundy is the chairman of a political group in Seminole County called Citizens for Preservation of Property Values. The goal of the group is to increase property taxes in Seminole County to help preserve the area's traditionally strong public school system — a system that has been decimated by $73 million in budget cuts over the past five years. In the Nov. 6 general election, Seminole voters will decide whether to approve a 1-mill increase in property taxes for four years beginning a year from now. The increase would bring in as much as $25 million annually to the school district.

Van Gundy says Dwight, who was recently traded to the Lakers, is going to lend some financial backing  to the cause. "Dwight has pledged his support," Van Gundy said Monday during an interview on our Open Mike radio show on 740 The Game. "He's a resident of Seminole County, and he's keeping his house here. I think his history will show that he's had great concern for kids in the Central Florida community. With him still living here, we asked him to help and he didn't hesitate."

Surprisingly to some, both Stan and Dwight say they are on good terms and have been communicating regularly over the last several weeks. Van Gundy even texted Howard and wished him good luck after he was traded to L.A.

It is typically considered good form to forgive and forget, and so we must give credit to SVG and Howard for working together to help others. Still, it's surprising that they could put all this behind them after some truly ugly action in Orlando. On the other hand, both seem to be happier now, and maybe that's all that matters.

It's a cliche to say that squabbles like the ones Van Gundy and Howard had in Orlando are "just business," but that seems to be their point of view in this case. Personally, I'm not sure that I could have seen past the arguments of the past, particularly if I'd been fired as a result. It's unlikely that these two are best friends these days, but it's also genuinely impressive that they were able to move on and do good for others. Dwight Howard has often looked like a child during this ordeal, but he deserves credit here for putting the past aside and doing good for the kids.

Want to buy J.D. Drew’s Florida condo? It actually might be in your price range

Buying the property of a Major League Baseball player, living where they lived, following the most luxurious path possible, imagining yourself as a Alex Rodriguez or Derek Jeter.

Sounds like a pie-in-the-sky dream, doesn't it?

Every so often The Stew passes along the information that some superstar ballplayer has put one of his homes up for sale. Of course, The 99 Percent of you out there could never, ever afford such obnoxiously luxurious real estate — and, to be fair, neither could we. To think otherwise would be a delusion of unaffordable grandeur, though it's always fun to suggest that there are Stewies who also use our blog as a place to shop for real estate.

At any rate, it appears former Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals slugger J.D. Drew might have changed the game here a bit. Drew, who isn't playing this season and likely has retired after putting in 13 seasons in the big leagues, recently put up his Florida condo up for sale.

The asking price? Not $10 million or $5 million. Heck, not even $1 million. Actually,  how does $299,000 sound? Hey, maybe you could buy it! You and a buddy, for sure. The U.S. Census reports that the median sales price of a new home in July was $224,000. The average price was $236,000. Drew's property isn't that much more, considering a low interest rate on a 30-year mortgage.

We can do this, people!

There's a catch, though. The property itself is ... sort of plain. Just like Drew himself!

Hey, of course it's plain. But it's also nice. Very nice. A-Rod wouldn't be caught dead living there, but it's nice. It's on a golf course — PGA National in Palm Beach County — so there's that. And it has a pool. A community pool. And the kitchen! It has a kitchen. With a peninsula. Not an island, but ... yeah. Seems like there should be more for a professional baseball player, doesn't there? But there's plenty, actually. It should make anyone happy.

Drew was a good hitter, sometimes very good, but he was considered one of the blandest players of his era. Some complained that he had an attitude problem, and he once even said he couldn't explain why it was so hard for him to get excited where people could tell. But it probably was just a big misunderstanding. Or even willful ignorance, a response to Drew holding out and refusing to sign after getting drafted by the Phillies. Drew's agent was Scott Boras, so even before he established himself in the majors, a lot of people were against him. And Drew responded by being quiet and reserved. He got hurt a lot, but it probably was because he was unlucky, not because he had a low pain tolerance or some kind of other weakness.

And even if all of the criticisms were true, Drew still hit .278/.384/.489 with 242 homers. Good. Very good. It should be enough for anyone.

So it makes sense that he'd own a home with an understated, conservative look. But hey, good for us. There's no way we could afford something flamboyant, anyhow. Now, does anyone know how escrow works?

A-Rod asking $38 million for Miami Beach mansion (Photos)

New York Yankees superstar Alex Rodriguez bought a mansion in Miami Beach that looks a lot like a Crate & Barrel. And now it could be yours for a mere $38 million.

The New York Daily News reports that A-Rod, who paid $24 million in 2010 for the nearly 20,000-square-foot waterfront property when he was dating Hollywood starlet Cameron Diaz, just might get his asking price. Even in this depressed era of real estate.

"The high-end Miami market is out of control right now," said Jorge Alonso, an associate broker at Douglas Elliman Florida. "The Russians and Brazilians are buying like crazy. It's like everyone is racing to buy a trophy house."

Well, if the Russians and Brazilians are moving, we haven't much time! The Daily News is not sure if A-Rod ever actually lived here, partly because he and Diaz broke up before the personal renovations were completed, but the place does have a Major League Baseball player's touches — including a batting cage and a 3,000-square-foot workout room.

The official listing from Sotheby's Real Estate says nothing about Centaur stables, however.

So, aside from star status, what else does this property have that yours (probably) doesn't?

• Nine bedrooms, 11 full bathrooms and two half-baths.

• "Uninterrupted, panoramic views" of the Miami skyline and bay, with 275 feet of waterfront frontage and two boat docks.

• Indoor/outdoor kitchen areas.

• "Zen like" outdoor/indoor living spaces.

• A full home generator, in case of the Zombie Apocalypse.

• A master suite that, by itself, is 2,200 square feet and includes a sitting room, atrium and his and hers bathrooms.

•  A full-size commercial elevator, in case you did own any Centaurs and you wanted them to sleep upstairs.

• 12-foot walls of "impact glass" surrounding the property, fortified by 16 security cameras.

• A home theater.

(Editor's note: A little narrow on the theater room, A-Rod. It's kind of like being in the front row at the cineplex. Good thing there's also a steam room to relax your strained neck.)

• Four-car garage. (Again, a little light on the auto space.)

• Staff quarters.

• A guest house.

• A "vanishing edge" swimming pool. (This feature comes with a built-in joke about A-Rod's declining performance.)

And if you want more photos, here you go.

It wouldn't be a record if someone wanted to pay A-Rod $38 million for the house. Another nearby house, situated on its own island, recently went for $47 million.

Roger Penske’s sons arrested by Nantucket police

09 Aug
2012

Roger Penske's sons, Jay and Mark Penske, were arrested by Nantucket police Thursday morning for an alleged break-in at the Nantucket Yacht Club after a woman accused Jay of urinating on her boots.

From the Nantucket Inquirer and Mirror:

According to a police report, the incident was reported as an assault and battery when two women approached officers on Broad Street, claiming they had been assaulted by two men, later identified as the Penske brothers.

The report claims the Penske brothers were urinating in the parking lot, and that when she confronted Jay Penske, he "turned and continued to urinate on her boots. He then proceeded to grab her arm and push her. (The woman) also states that Mark before he ran away pushed her and they both then ran to the house on Yacht Club property" the report states.

The brothers were charged with "breaking and entering in the nighttime and attempt to commit a misdemeanor." The women declined to file assault charges.

One of the women involved in the incident told the paper that Jay Penske turned and, uh, engaged his spray towards her when the women pointed him out urinating towards the sidewalk while Mark grabbed her friend's hand and hit her in the face with it as she was attempting to take a picture.

After, they ran towards the Nantucket Yacht Club property and police said they apprehended Jay trying to run away from the club and Mark inside the employee apartment with cuts on his arm after apparently falling down a staircase.

In perhaps the most bizarre part of the story, one of the women claims that Jay Penske shouted "You're not white enough" at her as he was being detained. (The race of the women was not revealed in the article.) They spent the night at the Nantucket detention facility. Their pretrial hearings are scheduled for Aug. 20.

Jay Penske is the owner of Dragon Racing in the IndyCar Series with drivers Sebastian Bourdais and Katherine Legge. Dragon now fields Chevrolets after starting the season with Lotus engines.
