Glen Davis wrote a celebration song, ‘Big Baby Gon’ Turn It Up’ (VIDEO)

There are some songs that become staples of basketball arenas for years: "Whoomp! (There It Is)," "Cotton Eye Joe," "Rock and Roll Part 2," etc. They are as much a part of the live NBA experience as sneaker squeaks and overpriced nachos, the soundtrack to the game we all love. It's also very hard to predict how and why any particular song might rise to that level of ubiquity. Sometimes, a songwriter just happens upon a sound that makes every sports-loving crowd go wild.

At the risk of getting ahead of myself, I think we have happened upon the next arena craze. Orlando Magic forward Glen "Big Baby" Davis, whom we already know to be a stellar dancer, is now trying his hand at songwriting. You can hear a snippet of the track, titled "Big Baby Gon' Turn It Up," above (via TBJ). Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel has more details:

Davis recently recorded a song called "Big Baby Gon' Turn It Up," and it's kind of catchy. It features his voice, with some significant enhancements provided by Auto-Tune.

Davis was asked whether he's going to release an album. A smile crossed his face.

"No," he said, still grinning. "I'm a one-hit wonder."

If that 12-second clip is any indication, Davis will dominate the airwaves of Orlando's Amway Center this season. As Robbins says, it is indeed "kind of catchy," which in music parlance is right above "slightly listenable." Based on the songs that have become jock jams in the past, that means it has just as good a chance as any competitor of becoming a sensation.

Let's just hope the Magic have plenty of reasons to celebrate this year. With no Dwight Howard, that's no sure thing.

It is very well known that the working relationship between star center Dwight Howard and head coach Stan Van Gundy did not end well in Orlando. SVG said that Howard was trying to get him fired, Howard issued several complaints that SVG would make his actions public, Van Gundy was fired, and Dwight left in trade. All things considered, it was pretty much the worst possible resolution to the issues.

On the bright side, not all has been lost in the relationship between the two men. Currently, they're teaming up to do substantive good for Florida schools. From Mike Bianchi for the Orlando Sentinel (via EOB):

If you read my column last week, you know Van Gundy is the chairman of a political group in Seminole County called Citizens for Preservation of Property Values. The goal of the group is to increase property taxes in Seminole County to help preserve the area's traditionally strong public school system — a system that has been decimated by $73 million in budget cuts over the past five years. In the Nov. 6 general election, Seminole voters will decide whether to approve a 1-mill increase in property taxes for four years beginning a year from now. The increase would bring in as much as $25 million annually to the school district.

Van Gundy says Dwight, who was recently traded to the Lakers, is going to lend some financial backing  to the cause. "Dwight has pledged his support," Van Gundy said Monday during an interview on our Open Mike radio show on 740 The Game. "He's a resident of Seminole County, and he's keeping his house here. I think his history will show that he's had great concern for kids in the Central Florida community. With him still living here, we asked him to help and he didn't hesitate."

Surprisingly to some, both Stan and Dwight say they are on good terms and have been communicating regularly over the last several weeks. Van Gundy even texted Howard and wished him good luck after he was traded to L.A.

It is typically considered good form to forgive and forget, and so we must give credit to SVG and Howard for working together to help others. Still, it's surprising that they could put all this behind them after some truly ugly action in Orlando. On the other hand, both seem to be happier now, and maybe that's all that matters.

It's a cliche to say that squabbles like the ones Van Gundy and Howard had in Orlando are "just business," but that seems to be their point of view in this case. Personally, I'm not sure that I could have seen past the arguments of the past, particularly if I'd been fired as a result. It's unlikely that these two are best friends these days, but it's also genuinely impressive that they were able to move on and do good for others. Dwight Howard has often looked like a child during this ordeal, but he deserves credit here for putting the past aside and doing good for the kids.

Orlando Magic fan sues franchise over use of her image in ads

17 Sep
2012

NBA fans are devoted to their favorite teams, often spending lots of money for little in return. For the most part, that transaction is accepted — fans stay loyal, and teams reward them with wins, playoff appearances, and sometimes even championships. Or, like me, those people are Golden State Warriors fans, and they spend entire decades feeling bitter due to little return on their investments.

However, regardless of a team's success rate, there are very few instances in which a team has reason to pay a fan with real-live American (or Canadian) currency. Of course, being the face of an advertising campaign would seem to qualify. And that's why one Orlando Magic fan is suing the franchise for using her image on ads all over town. From Stephen Hudak for the Orlando Sentinel (via TBJ):

The Orlando Magic billboard featuring Kristi Slavin's face shouted, "BE LOUD." And now she is. Slavin has sued the basketball franchise, claiming it used a photo of her face and upper body — without her permission — in a marketing campaign. The picture, taken at the Amway Center during the Magic's 2011 playoff run, shows the fan, now 30, in a Dwight Howard jersey, her arms raised and cheering. [...]

The lawsuit, filed last month by Winter Park attorney Hank Hornsby, contends the Magic profited from the commercial and promotional use of Slavin's face and body, but the team neither compensated nor consulted her. Magic spokesman Joel Glass said the team was aware of the lawsuit, but he would not comment further.

In the lawsuit, Slavin said the ads, banners and billboard have caused "uncomfortable and embarrassing encounters and questions" from friends, family and co-workers. The document alleges her public image was altered by the unauthorized use. "People have asked her, 'When did you get into modeling?' '' Hornsby said.

Slavin, a social worker who assists mentally ill and homeless clients in Seminole County and volunteers to help children who have been sexually abused, did not seek attention, Hornsby said. He described her as a private person who would not comment for this story.

The lawsuit seeks damages in excess of $15,000, the statutory limit for a civil claim in Circuit Court.

Trey Kerby has already made the requisite joke about the shame of being outed as a Magic fan in the post-Dwight Howard era, so we can abstain from that business here. We should also probably decline to discuss the merits of the case, which are for the lawyers to figure out. Although, with $15,000 in damages at stake and blog publicity now in full effect, my guess is it will get settled out of court.

When reached for comment, Dwight Howard said he just hopes Miss Slavin still likes him.

Dwight Howard thanks Orlando in a full page newspaper ad; Orlando is slow to respond

02 Sep
2012

Dwight Howard led the Orlando Magic to the NBA Finals just three years and three months ago. He made the team a viable championship candidate for years, won three Defensive Player of the Year awards on the franchise's watch, while observing as former GM Otis Smith frittered away the impact of his brilliance with a litany of terrible personnel moves. He was well in his right to want the heck out of Orlando once the misery that was the 2010-11 season ended, a campaign that saw Smith attempting to recover from the moves-after-the-moves-after-the-moves that made it so Howard and Jameer Nelson (players that Smith did not draft) were working against the tide to make it back to those Finals.

Yet, in a miserable bit of self-aggrandizement, tactlessness, obliviousness and incompetence that in comparison made Smith look like the NBA executive of the decade, Howard blew any goodwill he had from outsiders that understood that his best years would probably be best spent away from Orlando. Dwight was traded from Orlando to the Los Angeles Lakers early in August, just a few days after cowardly begging off an appearance at his own youth camp so as not to face the sort of pointed questions that only an 11-year old in high tops could nail him with.

On Sunday, nearly a month after he was dealt to Los Angeles, he took out a full-page advertisement in the Orlando Sentinel, thanking the fans that got to be a part of whatever the heck he brought from 2004 to 2011 and (kind of) 2012.

New Orlando Magic Jacque Vaughn wants Glen Davis to show up in shape

03 Aug
2012

Over his five-season NBA career (and three season at LSU), Orlando Magic forward Glen "Big Baby" Davis has become particularly famous for being fairly overweight. While Davis carries his weight pretty well — he's mobile and athletic — he will never be the picture of the in-shape professional athlete. That's just who he is, I suppose, and anyone who works with him has probably gotten used to it by now.

However, new Orlando Magic head coach Jacque Vaughn has a different set of expectations for Davis. When the Magic report to training camp this fall, Vaughn expects him to be in much better shape. From Josh Robbins for The Orlando Sentinel (via SLAM):

What was Vaughn's message to Davis? "Just be ready," Davis recalled Thursday.

"Just making sure that you're ready. You're going to have the opportunity to be a contributor here. You're going to have the opportunity to do big things, and you just be ready, making sure that you come in [to training camp Oct. 1] the right way, in the right shape, and just holding me accountable." [...]

Davis entered last season's training camp, his first with the Magic, a bit out of shape after the five-month NBA lockout. One of his goals this offseason has been to improve his conditioning. [...]

"I called [Vaughn] a 'thirsty dog,' because I know he's been chomping at the bits to get on that level of coaching. Now he has the opportunity to do that. I'm blessed and fortunate to be in a situation to be his first pupil."

This might seem like a joke, because he was listed last season at a not-exactly-trim 289 pounds. And while that number is very high, it's not exactly atypical — it was his official mark in 2008-2009, as well. In fact, that means that Davis' weight probably holds steady in the official listings, and that 289 might even be a conservative figure. In which case, even at his most svelte, Davis is never going to be a physical specimen.

However, there are degrees of good shape for different body types, and all Vaughn means here is that he wants Davis to do his best. If he slacked, then it showed in his play. Being in shape or not isn't a binary situation — there's a continuum of health. Davis just needs to push himself as far to the healthy side as he can.

Oh, and Davis should also work on his similes, because I'm pretty sure he means "hungry dog."
