Deron Williams may play Nets/Knicks season opener with Betty White tattoo for charity

22 Oct
2012

Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams is enjoying the increased public profile that comes with being the signature star of New York City's newest and coolest professional sports club, appearing on magazine covers, getting spotted pushing a bright yellow Lamborghini on the streets of New York and taking the opportunity to speak his mind on whatever topic he pleases. On Sunday, he also used the spotlight to try to raise money for autism programs, appearing as one of a host of celebrities on Comedy Central's "Night of Too Many Stars."

The event has raised more than $14 million to date to benefit "programs across the country in support of individuals with autism that desperately need quality services" through charitable partner New York Collaborates for Autism. Some celebrities man telephones, taking donations from viewers; others contribute rare and autographed memorabilia to be auctioned off; and others offer premium services on which donors could bid, like comedian Aziz Ansari pledging to take over a user's Twitter account for 15 minutes and Conan O'Brien promising to host an episode of his talk show with an orange spray tan and his hair in corn rows if he could raise $100,000 for autism programs.

Williams' involvement fell into the latter category, and should make the Nets' season-opening contest against the New York Knicks just a bit more ridiculous, according to Tim Bontemps of the New York Post:

Williams told viewers that if they could raise $100,000, he would wear one of three temporary tattoos on Opening Night at Barclays Center against the Knicks Nov. 1. The viewers could text in one of three choices: the face of actress Betty White, the "dramatic chipmunk" of YouTube fame or the face of Russian comedian Yakof Smirnoff.

After his appearance on the broadcast, Williams — clearly no fan of "What a country!" humor or the genus Tamias — put his thumb on the scale a bit, enlisting his more than 282,000 Twitter followers to not only give generously, but cast their votes for the Golden Girl:

Perhaps as a result, as Bontemps notes, "When the telecast ended, Betty White was the runaway leader with over 70 percent of the vote, with voting set to go through the night." I'm not sure if Monday morning ballots will still be counted, but I tossed my $25 in for Betty today, and it looks like you can still donate, too. The event as a whole reportedly raised more than $3.7 million, which sure looks like more than $100,000 to me, so the expectation is that Williams will be a sport and wear the temporary tattoo out for tip-off. Besides, it's not like it'll be the worst tattoo in Nets history. Not by a long shot.

One last note: Williams isn't the first person associated with the Nets to help out with the "Night of Too Many Stars" — as BDL Editor Kelly Dwyer reminded me this morning, way back in the long, long ago (2008, to be precise), TrueHoop noted former New Jersey Nets coach Lawrence Frank ("or someone who looks just like him") donating $10,000 to the fundraising effort. You know, in case you needed a reason to root for the Detroit Pistons this season that had nothing to do with Greg Monroe or Andre Drummond.

Ben Eager of Oilers charged with assault after Toronto pub fight

21 Oct
2012

The most disturbing thing about Edmonton Oilers winger Ben Eager getting charged with assault early Saturday morning in Toronto? The repeated use of "doorman" in the media coverage.

While technically correct, the preferred nomenclature is likely "bouncer" or "entrance manager." In fact, Leslie Mann used "doorman" as a pejorative in "Knocked Up" after Craig Robinson refused her entry into a club. ("I can't let you in cause you're old … for this club, not, you know, for the Earth.")

OK, perhaps the above is the second most-disturbing thing, ranking right behind a professional athlete getting himself (and his brother) charged in a bar-related altercation.

From the Edmonton Journal:

According to CityTV in Toronto, a fight broke out inside The Quail Pub in the Rosedale area and carried on outside, where Eager and his brother were charged with assault, assault causing bodily harm, and assault with a weapon against a doorman at the bar.

The doorman suffered cuts to his face and was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

"Assault with a weapon"? Oh dear, please tell us Eager didn't mistake the bouncer for an HD camera:

Details on the incident are rolling in ...

More details from City News:

Jennine Lombardo, general manager at The Quail and Firkin Pub, told CityNews the fight began inside the bar and then moved outdoors. The doorman allegedly had to hold up a patio chair to shield himself from the attack.

"We are used to dealing with young professionals. Last night stopped staff dead in their tracks and is not typical of what happens at our establishment. Once the fight started, service ended immediately. Our staff was in shock. And we are concerned for our door man who was brutally attacked and hurt," said Lombardo.

Eager signed a 3-year deal with the Oilers last summer, playing 63 games of truculent hockey with them last season. He joins such luminaries as Joe Thornton in the 'NHLers involved in bar fights' club. (Although not Eric Lindros; thanks, Snopes!)

No word on any possible jail time for Eager; although we might know someone that wouldn't mind being face-to-face with only a pane of glass separating them on visitation day ...

Steve Novak goes perfect 7-for-7 from 3-point land in Knicks’ preseason win over Wizards (VIDEO)

12 Oct
2012

It's early on a Friday morning a couple of weeks away from the start of the 2012-13 season, so you might find yourself trying to remember, "Hey, why is it exactly that Steve Novak went from 'four teams in five years, can't stay in an NBA rotation' to 'epic folk hero who should receive a $15 million contract in free agency' last season?" Well, for starters, "should" is a pretty weighted word there, but there are a few reasons:

1. His move from the end of the New York Knicks' bench to the thick of their playoff run helped amplify the team's other, larger rags-to-riches story;

2. He played in, y'know, New York;

3. He started pretending to wear a belt;

4. Oh, and he hits pretty much everything.

While the first point there will (regrettably) no longer be true, Nos. 2 and 3 will probably hold fast. And as we saw in the Knicks' preseason opener against the Washington Wizards on Thursday night, No. 4 looks primed for a repeat, too. Behold:

The NBA's reigning leader in 3-point shooting accuracy got his preseason off to a sterling start, going a perfect 7-for-7 from deep to score a game-high 21 points in 32 minutes off the New York bench en route to a 108-101 Knicks win. J.R. Smith added 20 off the pine to pace Mike Woodson's attack.

Novak's openness was due partly to curious Wizards defense (I'm not so sure why you'd sag off him in the corner in favor of shading toward a double on Kurt Thomas), partly to some cute set work in the halfcourt (the little cross-screen he works with Carmelo Anthony leading to a cut to the 3-point arc, cleared up by Henry Sims' pin of a recovering Jan Vesely), partly to curious Wizards defense (Chris Singleton overshading toward the threat of Raymond Felton's penetration to leave Novak alone on the wing), partly to curious Wizards defense (Chris Singleton closes out but still leaves plenty of space for Novak to rise and fire) and partly to curious Wizards defense (seriously, Chris Singleton, it's preseason, but aren't you supposed to be growing into a defensive presence?). I wouldn't expect Novak to continue to see that kind of airspace against good defenses (remember what happened to him against the Miami Heat during last year's brief first-round cameo), but it's neat to see that when it's given to him, he's got no compunction about quickly taking it and making defenses pay.

Novak finished 7-for-8 on the night, with his lone miss coming on what Knickerblogger's Jim Cavan called a "dribble-drive 18-foot FLOATER, which naturally careened off the heel [of the rim]." The lesson, as always: Just shoot 3-pointers, Steve, and play to your strengths. When you do, you're a mighty and fearsome thing.
