Baker has two TDs in Pats debut

Chris Baker caught two touchdown passes from Tom Brady, who was playing in his first game since tearing ligaments in his left knee in Week 1 last year, leading the New England Patriots to a 27-25 victory over the Eagles in the preseason opener Thursday night. Brady found Baker open for a 4-yard TD strike for the opening score at 7:58. Brady then sent the Patriots into halftime with a 21-6 lead when he connected with Baker on a 9-yard scoring play at 2:12 of the second quarter. "I thought he was sharp. Wagner has final rehab outing Friday

The News According to the New York Daily News, Billy Wagner will make his final rehab appearance with Single-A St. Lucie on Friday night. Our View Assuming Wagner doesn't re-injure himself in his final rehab outing he will rejoin the Mets bullpen on Sunday. He will obviously be a setup man behind K-Rod, but could be trade bait for a team in need of a closer the rest of the way. He may be a sneaky grab in keeper leagues right now. The News Tim Hudson allowed five hits and two runs in a rehab outing for Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman. Peavy fares well in rehab start

The News Jake Peavy fared well in his first rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte tonight, as he racked up four strikeouts with only one hit and one walk issued over three scoreless innings, according to MLB.com. He said, "I threw every pitch I had -- fastball, cutter, curveball, slider, changeup. The ball was coming out fairly good. I don't feel like I'm as strong as I'm gonna be." Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall played in his first game during Thursday's preseason opener against the Cardinals since suffering a season-ending shoulder injury four weeks into the 2008 season. The News The San Francisco Chronicle reports that injured A's starter Justin Duchscherer threw five scoreless innings in his final rehab start. Our View Duchscherer pitched in a rookie league game in Scottsdale to finish up his rehab. He is expected to be back with the A's next week and rejoin their rotation. Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell played two series during Thursday's preseason opener against the Cowboys, driving his team to a field goal on the opening drive. Russell, who rolled his ankle early in camp, looked poised in the pocket, completing six of nine passes for 50 yards against Dallas' backup cornerbacks and even scrambling for 18 yards on one play.
