Jim Nantz gets the winner wrong after Patriots beat the Jets

22 Oct
2012

After Stephen Gostkowski booted a 43-yard field goal with 11:02 left in overtime, and the New York Jets failed to respond on their subsequent drive, the New England Patriots appeared to have a hard-fought 29-26 victory in hand. At that point, both teams walked to the middle of the field to exchange the usual post-game congratulations and condolences.

In the booth, however, CBS analyst Jim Nantz didn't seem so sure. Nantz, who's generally one of the better announcers in any sport, seemed to have a particularly difficult time accepting the result.

As referee Jeff Triplette walked back to the field to confirm Mark Sanchez's fumble, Nantz said that the game "was going to be a stunner -- the biggest underdog of the day in the league."

Erm, what?

"And the New York Jets stand alone in first place now ... the New England Patriots, I should say," Nantz went on, eventually correcting himself. "At 4-3 -- what an amazing game here!"

So amazing that the result befuddled at least one expert.

As we said, we're just having a bit of fun at Nantz's expense -- we're aware of a few guys who can't always seem to remember where they are on gameday, and Nantz isn't usually one of them.

One point of interest, though -- on the Rob Ninkovich sack of Sanchez that caused the fumble and subsequent Pats recovery, it certainly looks as if Patriots linebacker Jermaine Cunningham went low on Sanchez, tackled him below the knees, and engaged long enough for an official familiar with that particular point of emphasis to throw a flag and extend the Jets' drive.

No matter. Perhaps Triplette was wondering how he'd get out of Foxboro alive if he'd made that call.

Golf-U.S. domination bad for Presidents Cup – Schwartzel (Reuters)

16 Oct
2012
Oct 16 (Reuters) - The Presidents Cup falls short of the drama witnessed at the Ryder Cup due to the utter domination of the Americans and the weakness of their International Team opponents, 2011 U.S. Masters winner Charl Schwartzel said on Tuesday. The South African highlighted Europe's sensational final day fightback from 10-6 down to beat the United States in the 'Miracle at Medinah' last month to underline the Ryder Cup's vibrancy. By contrast, the U.S. ...

Watch Matt Duchene’s spin-o-rama feed lead to Fabian Brunnstrom’s game winner (VIDEO)

Matt Duchene and Viktor Stalberg both made their debuts with Frolunda in the Swedish Elite League on Saturday and for the Colorado Avalanche forward it was a memorable first game.

"I haven't played a game since April, so I'm just dying to get out there with the boys,"Duchene told the Frolunda website on Friday. It showed.

Frolunda edged MODO 4-3 to remain eighth in the Elitserien standings. Stalberg scored his first goal and Duchene contributed two helpers, including this lovely spin-o-rama dish to Fabian Brunnstrom with two minutes remaining in the third period for the game winner:

Someone's been watching Patrick Kane...

Duchene and Stalberg's side might be getting stronger very soon. New York Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist has traveled back home to Sweden and will reportedly meet with Frolunda about the potential of signing with them for the lockout. His twin brother, Joel, is currently the team's leading scorer.

Austin Azurdia delivers last second heroics for spectacular game winner in BCHL (VIDEO)

09 Oct
2012

The Langley Rivermen are a Junior A team playing in the British Columbia Hockey League and currently sit fourth in the Mainland Division through eight games.

This past weekend the Rivermen won a pair of 1-goal games against the Prince George (I wish they were the Spruce Moose) Spruce Kings. Sunday's series finale ended in the most dramatic way possible: a game-winning goal with less than a second to play thanks to forward Austin Azurdia:

Very impressive patience for the young kid to accept the pass near center ice with five second left and have enough confidence to try and dirty dangle the defenseman instead of firing off a shot to beat the buzzer.

And for all the well-deserved praise you can toss Azurdia's way, let's give some credit to the play-by-play man, as well. What a call by Brandon Astle, including the applicable, "This kid could run for mayor!"

It was a plentiful weekend for the 19-year old Azurdia. He earned BCHL Player of the Week honors with four goals and five points in the two games against Prince George, becoming the first player in franchise history to earn the honor, and is currently watching his last second heroics go viral.
