Orton, Simms ready for Denver QB battle

Kyle Orton and Chris Simms have been told they have to earn the right to become the Broncos' next starting quarterback. They met with the Denver media for the first time. They each said all the right things, including that it was a thrill to work for the man who helped Tom Brady and Matt Cassel thrive in New England in new head coach and offensive architect Josh McDaniels. They professed indifference to the fact the Broncos might draft a QB later this month. And they welcomed the competition for the starting job. All signs would seem to point toward Orton having the edge on Simms. He's 21-12 as a starter, including 15-2 at home, the best mark in the NFL since he joined the league in 2005. Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels insisted he wanted things to work out with QB Jay Cutler. The feeling wasn't mutual. In his first news conference in Denver since the rift developed more than a month ago, McDaniels said it became clear the Broncos had no choice but to grant Cutler his trade request. The Broncos sent the Pro Bowl passer and a fifth-round pick in the upcoming draft to the Chicago Bears on Thursday for two first-round picks, a third-rounder and quarterback Kyle Orton. McDaniels said Orton will compete with Chris Simms for the starting job in Denver. He also didn't rule out taking a quarterback in the draft.
