Bruce will return in 2009

Posted by Gridiron 3 hours ago (
WR Isaac Bruce is postponing retirement for another season with the San Francisco 49ers. Bruce, the second-leading receiver in NFL history with 14,944 yards, informed coach Mike Singletary on Wednesday of his decision to return for his 16th NFL season. He missed the 49ers' minicamp last month while contemplating retirement, but his return is a major boost to a San Francisco offense that would have lacked a top receiver. Bruce led San Francisco with 61 catches for 835 yards and seven touchdowns last season, his first with the 49ers after 14 seasons with the Rams. Bruce hit two major milestones during a late-season win over St. Louis, passing Tim Brown for the second-most receiving yards in league history and becoming the fifth player to catch 1,000 passes.

The News The Tampa Tribune reports that Kellen Winslow did not participate in practice on Wendnesday. He was present and in uniform. Given that he practiced on Tuesday there has been speculation that he could be injured. Our View If anything, this is probably just a precautionary measure, and it is unlikely that Winslow has suffered a serious injury. Should something serious come up, we'll certainly be on top of it.

Bruce to play in 2009

The News Wide receiver Isaac Bruce will hold off on retirement and play a 16th season in the NFL, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Bruce, 36, led the 49ers with 61 catches, 835 yards, and seven scores in 2008. Our View The 49ers paid Brandon Jones to fill Bruce's flanker spot, and the former Titan may now be relegated to a backup role. We still expect Josh Morgan to take over the other starting spot and be the team's best deep threat. Bruce won't likely repeat his 2008 stats, as the 49ers are transitioning away from their Mike Martz offense.

The News reports that the Dolphins and Patriots figure to be the prime suitors for free-agent defensive end Jason Taylor. Our View Taylor can still provide some quality pass rushing and he could be used on the edge of a 3-4 or 4-3 formation. He does not appear to be in any hurry to get a deal in place, so a signing may have to wait until after the NFL draft.
