Turner's ankle not yet at 100 percent

The News Michael Turner hasn't yet fully healed from his high ankle sprain, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I wouldn't say 100 (percent)," Turner said. "I would say 90. I'm well enough to play some games and not worry about it." Our View It's certainly taking Turner a lot of time to heal from this ankle injury, but as he said, the fact that he played on the injury last season has slowed the healing process. There's still plenty of time for Turner's ankle to get back to full strength before the start of the season, and we wouldn't hold it against him much for now. Read More

Shockey says he's fine

Jeremy Shockey declined to discuss Saturday what happened in the New Orleans Saints' weight room that led to his hospitalization on May 27. But he let his actions speak for him as he participated in most of the Saints' minicamp activities last weekend. Saints coach Sean Payton said Shockey was dehydrated and had low blood sugar when his muscles seized up in the weight room for about a minute, unsettling teammates and sending trainers scrambling to his aid. The tight end said he experienced something similar when he was hospitalized after passing out at a pool-side party in Las Vegas during the 2009 offseason, but did not want to discuss this latest incident in any detail. The star tight end says back spasms that kept him out of the opening practice of minicamp on Friday morning still bothered him when he returned for practices on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. "That's expected," Shockey said. "I really wasn't expecting to do much today, but I felt better. It's hard to just sit Read More

McCown: Garrard still the starter

Jaguars QB Luke McCown said during an interview on Sirius NFL Radio that he's the backup and David Garrard is the starter for 2010. "It's David's job," McCown said. "There's been a lot more made about it being a competition than there really should be. If anybody even hints to me about the idea of it being an open competition, I'm all for it. But that's not the case. ... I gladly work my tail off every day. I approach every rep in order to be the starter. There doesn't have to be a sense of, 'It's an open competition.' I'm going to do my best to push David to be better because if he's better, our team is better. In the offseason, I think it's easy to get caught up in individual competitions and battles. This thing is still about being a team and going out and winning a championship. That's got to be the goal year-round. That's the goal for me." Williams ahead of Benn

The St. Petersburg Times reports the Bucs could have a three-way race for the starting wide receiver spots. The paper says second-year WR Sammie Stroughter is making a push for a starting job. In addition to his flanker duties, he's working as an outside receiver and using his speed and quickness to get off the line of scrimmage. Meanwhile, WR Mike Williams, the fourth-round pick from Syracuse, appears to be ahead of Illinois WR Arrelious Benn, who was taken two rounds ahead of him. But Benn's real worth will be demonstrated once the pads go on and he's able to break tackles and make yards after the catch. Johnson, Stafford developing rapport

The Detroit Free-Press reports Lions QB Matthew Stafford and WR Calvin Johnson are starting to develop a solid rapport. "We've got to keep working," Stafford said. "But I feel like we're getting on the same page more and more. He knows what I'm looking at, I know what he's looking at and it's getting better." Stafford and Johnson couldn't develop much chemistry last offseason because Stafford didn't join the veterans until May, then didn't get all the reps with the first team until September. Johnson missed much of training camp because of injury. "They've been at it strong since mid-March, so we should be seeing stuff like that," coach Jim Schwartz said. White wants more yards after catch

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Falcons WR Roddy White enters 2010 working on three straight years with at least 1,000 yards receiving, but White wants more yards and believes he can improve his yards after a catch. White led the team with 392 yards after catches last season, followed by Tony Gonzalez's 240. But White averaged just 4.6 after a catch and Gonzalez averaged 2.9. For receivers with more than 50 catches last season, Dallas WR Miles Austin led the league in YAC average at 7.6 yards. Green Bay's Greg Jennings was second at 7.1 and Philadelphia's DeSean Jackson was third at 6.8. "We can do a lot more of that," White said. "We are going to have to do a lot more of that. We have to break some more tackles, pick up some third downs and move the chains." Atlanta Falcons - Tony Gonzalez - Greg Jennings - Roddy White - NFL Read More

Goodson hopes for bigger role

The Charlotte Observer reports Panthers RB Mike Goodson is hoping to be a bigger factor in Carolina this season. He is currently third on the depth chart behind DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, but Goodson would like to still get a share of the touches. "Just for me going into my second year, there's a new confidence level," Goodson said. "Just have a year under your belt, knowing your stuff, and just coming in with that confidence. When you come in as a rookie, it's hard. Once you get into the regular season and you see how to be a professional ... it's kind of overwhelming for a young guy. But once you get into that second year, after working with these guys it's a lot easier." Carolina Panthers - Jonathan Stewart - Mike Goodson - sport - NFL Read More

Daniel wants No. 2 job

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that New Orleans QB Chase Daniel might make a push for the No. 2 job behind starter Drew Brees and avoid the Saints bringing in a veteran to be the backup. Patrick Ramsey has been rumored to be a target for New Orleans. But Daniel hopes to win the job. "My mindset is to go in there and win the No. 2 spot," Daniel said. "I'm just going to go out there and compete and let the cards fall where they may." New Orleans Saints - Drew Brees - New Orleans - Times Picayune - Patrick Ramsey Read More
