Jets to NFL: Refs are ignoring rules with Patriots’ no-huddle

21 Oct
2012

Earlier this week, New York Jets defensive lineman Calvin Pace said that the no-huddle offense run by the New England Patriots is "borderline illegal," and Pace's primary coach has taken that notion to a new level. With the Jets and Pats matching wits this afternoon, New York defensive coordinator Mike Pettine wants the NFL to know that New England's dizzying offense has the refs looking the other way when they shouldn't.

"It's going to be a major point of contention before [our] game with the officials to make sure that they know the rule is when they substitute, we're permitted to substitute," Pettine told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News on Friday.

"If the officials permit [the Patriots] to do that, then the game is going to become chaos. That's the problem. Because we're going to be running guys on. We need to make sure that that is enforced for this game, because we found examples on tape where it has not been. Then it's impossible. Now you can't defend it."

Pettine does have a point, and he's not blaming the Patriots for running an offense that allowed them to run 473 plays through six full weeks, by far the highest total in the NFL. He would like the officials to follow the league's Rule 5, Section 2, Article 10:

"If a substitution is made by the offense, the offense shall not be permitted to snap the ball until the defense has been permitted to respond with its substitutions. . . . The offense is prohibited from rushing quickly to the line of scrimmage and snapping the ball in an obvious attempt to cause a defensive foul (i.e. — too many men on the field). . . . The umpire will stand over the ball until the Referee deems that the defense has had a reasonable time to complete its substitutions."

The specific issue the Jets have is that the Pats are allowed to move different personnel in and out in rapid-fire fashion, and defenses aren't allowed to specifically respond with their own new groupings.

"I'm all for the no-huddle and one grouping," Pettine said. "Whoever you put out there, you better be prepared to go through a whole series and be out there for a while. And that's fine. When they change, we need to be given the right to change . . . and we're going to make sure that right is given to us."

Here's the problem with that notion, as sensible as it may seem. The official leading the Patriots-Jets crew is none other than ... Jeff Triplette.

We'll save you a re-run of Triplette's greatest hits, except to summarize them in this post from last Monday, when Triplette called a couple of really weird false starts against San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, and say that putting Triplette in charge of such complicated issues ... well, it's not a good idea. We can't wait to see how Deputy Dawg jumbles this one up.

VIDEO: Ricky Stenhouse wins Kansas Nationwide race in hectic fuel mileage finish

21 Oct
2012

Kyle Busch was oh-so-close to getting his first Nationwide Series victory for his own Kyle Busch Motorsports team on Saturday afternoon at Kansas Speedway.

After the race was extended because of a late crash, many cars near the front of the field were pushing the limits of their fuel tanks. Busch was one of them, and it looked like he was going to grab that first win as he led Ricky Stenhouse to the line as the white flag waved.

However, Busch started to wiggle his car back and forth on the backstretch of the final lap, and in turn 3, his car ran dry, allowing Stenhouse to pass him for the race win.

Saturday's race featured 12 cautions, including one when Stenhouse made contact with Joey Logano. Will we see that type of action on Sunday? We'll find out soon.

Larry Fitzgerald joins Randy Moss as only receivers ever to top 10,000 yards under age 30

14 Oct
2012

The Arizona Cardinals' 19-16 overtime loss to Buffalo on Sunday afternoon was a horror show of misfires and missed opportunities. But there was at least one minor highlight: Cardinals all-everything receiver Larry Fitzgerald caught six passes for 93 yards, and in doing so topped 10,000 yards for his career.

That's an impressive achievement in its own right, as only 36 other receivers in NFL history have crossed the 10K threshold. (Spare a thought for poor Eric Moulds, who fell just 5 yards short of the mark.) Fitzgerald has an outside chance of breaking into the top 30 by the end of this season.

[Also: Redskins could be in big trouble for handling of RG3's concussion]

And speaking of 30: Fitzgerald is part of an even more exclusive club: receivers who have hit the 10,000-yard mark before age 30. Fitzgerald is age 29 years, 44 days. The only other player to tally up so much yardage so early in his career was Randy Moss, who was 28 years, 314 days old when he passed the mark.

But it's a shame that Moss isn't around to -- wait, what? Moss is still playing? Huh. How about that.

Yes, not only is Moss still playing, he's turning in some solid plays of his own. On the same day Fitzgerald crossed 10,000 yards, Moss hit a mark of his own, nabbing two passes for 75 yards to cross 15,000 in his career. He now trails only Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens and Isaac Bruce on the all-time receiving list, and should catch Bruce within a few games.

[Also: Is this the wildest touchdown in NFL history?]

Moss' 49ers turned in a far more pathetic effort than Fitzgerald's Cardinals in a 26-3 loss to the Giants, but Moss did provide one of the few San Francisco highlights with this exceptional, how'd-he-do-that 55-yarder:

We salute both of you gentlemen. Long may you run ... and catch.

Swede Blixt claims first PGA Tour title (Reuters)

14 Oct
2012
(Reuters) - Sweden's Jonas Blixt overhauled a stumbling John Mallinger to win his first PGA Tour title by one shot at the Frys.com Open in San Martin, California on Sunday. Two strokes behind the pacesetting Mallinger overnight, rookie Blixt fired a three-under-par 68 to break clear of a tightly bunched leaderboard on a sun-splashed afternoon at CordeValle Golf Club. The red-shirted Swede snatched the outright lead when he sank a seven-foot birdie putt at the drivable par-four 17th after overhitting the green off the tee, then safely pared the last to finish at 16-under 268. ...
