The Cubs have released right-hander Chad Gaudin The reliever was acquired from Oakland in the trade that brought Rich Harden to Chicago in July. The Cubs also optioned right-hander Jeff Samardzija to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday. Gaudin went 9-5 with a 4.40 ERA in 50 outings with the Athletics and Cubs. He was 4-2 with a 6.26 ERA in 24 relief appearances for Chicago.

Lilly Ks eight, but not his best

Cubs SP Ted Lilly pitched five innings, giving up seven hits and four runs Sunday against the Indians. He walked two and struck out eight. Since returning from the World Baseball Classic, he has a 5.14 ERA in seven innings.

The Chicago Tribune reported Sunday that the Cubs have trimmed their roster down to 30 players after optioning pitchers Kevin Hart and Randy Wells to Triple-A Iowa and assigning catcher Mark Johnson, infielders Esteban German and Andres Blanco, and outfielders So Taguchi and Brad Snyder to minor league camp.
