Bradying is sweeping the nation (for the next 48 hours or so)

07 Feb

by Chris Chase in Fantasy Football, General

Bradying is the distant, yet equally annoying, cousin of Tebowing.

The signature pose doesn't mimic the act of being a three-time Super Bowl champion, future Hall of Famer, happy family man and seemingly well-adjusted human being like Tom Brady; it recreates a woebegone pose that the New England Patriots quarterback was captured in during Super Bowl XLVI.

(Note: All shots of Bradying should be accompanied by the sad trombone sound.)

Like Tebowing and those Will Ferrell Old Milwaukee commercials, Bradying was sort of amusing the first time you see it, then will decline as it grows in popularity, bottoming out in the moment that a C-list celebrity like Kathy Griffin tweets about it and then officially dying three weeks from now when your mom mentions it to you during your weekly phone call.

We tried to find who started the trend but the quest proved fruitless, like the sports meme equivalent of identifying patient zero. Let us know who it was and we'll honor him or her by Giseleing (my significant other will scream profanities in your direction).

Giants fan who won $50,000 on Super Bowl safety will donate winnings to charity

The New York Giants fan who won $50,000 on the team's Super Bowl XLVI safety will donate his winnings to charity.

Jona Rechnitz placed a $1,000 wager that the first score of Sunday's game would be a Giants safety. When Tom Brady was called for intentional grounding on the New England Patriots' first possession, Rechnitz had the improbable 50-1 victory and the $50,000 in winnings it brought.

TMZ reports that Rechnitz plans to donate all the post-tax money to various charities, including one of Tom Brady's choice. He also hopes to donate $5,000 to a charity selected by Justin Tuck, the Giants defender whose pass rush forced Brady to make his illegal throw downfield.

Rechnitz owns a capital investment firm in Manhattan. He told the entertainment website that he only makes one Super Bowl bet per year.

The safety was only the sixth in Super Bowl history and the first to start a game in more than 40 years. In the Giants' first playoff victory of 2012, the team gave up a safety to the Atlanta Falcons. Those two points were all Atlanta would score in the game, marking the first time in NFL playoff history that a team finished a game with that total.

Giants rookie proposes to girlfriend on the field after the Super Bowl

by Chris Chase in Fantasy Football, General

On Sunday night, while his New York Giants teammates were celebrating winning a ring, linebacker Greg Jones was giving one away.

The rookie took to a knee on the field at Lucas Oil Stadium after his team's victory in Super Bowl XLVI and proposed to his college sweetheart, Amanda. Confetti was still falling from the rafters when Jones' girlfriend accepted.

"She was bawling," Jones told NJ.com on Monday morning. "I was like, 'I don't know how long she's going to keep crying.'"

Practice squad tight end Christian Hopkins held the ring during the game, then gave it to Jones after Tom Brady's Hail Mary fell incomplete. Had Rob Gronkowski caught that ball, Jones said he would have waited until another time to propose.

The couple met each other at Michigan State. Jones starred on the football team, while his future bride played basketball.

Jones spent most of his first year playing special teams for the Giants.

His story brings to mind that of former Boise State running back Ian Johnson, who proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend on the field after the Broncos' wild Fiesta Bowl victory in 2007.

After injury, Ballard tests leg on sideline and collapses in pain (video)

by Chris Chase in Fantasy Football, General

Early in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVI, New York Giants tight end Jake Ballard suffered a left knee injury on a play away the ball. He was brought off the field by trainers, but, this being the biggest game of his career, he wanted back in the game.

To test out the balky knee and show coaches he was able to play, Ballard engaged in a full sprint on the Giants sideline. It did not end well. Ballard took a few strides before running into a member of team personnel and collapsed to the ground in pain.

Ballard wouldn't return to the game, but did get some good news when it was revealed that the meniscus damage he suffered was not serious.

He was in the locker room when Ahmad Bradshaw scored his game-winning touchdown. He demanded that medical personnel cart him back out to the field so he could celebrate with his teammates. They obliged.

Brady sets two Super Bowl records as Pats take lead on Giants

05 Feb
2012
by Chris Chase in Fantasy Football, General

After getting dominated on both sides of the ball for most of the first half of Super Bowl XLVI, the New England Patriots used a record-tying drive to take a 10-9 lead at halftime.

Another stellar Steve Weatherford punt pinned Tom Brady and New England back at their own 4-yard line with 4:03 left in the half and the Patriots trailing 9-3. Sixteen plays later, the Patriots were in the end zone. The 96-yard drive tied a Super Bowl record.

Brady was perfect on the drive, going 10-for-10 for 86 yards. At the start of the second half, Brady threw five consecutive completions, giving him 16 straight overall. That broke a Super Bowl record held by Brady's idol, Joe Montana.

New England didn't appear to be in a hurry during the drive, almost as if the team was content to leave the offense out and keep the defense on the sideline. Though the team had three timeouts, the Pats didn't call a timeout after a running play with 1:01 left in the half. By the time the next play went off, 23 seconds had burned off the clock.

It was of little consequence. New England's receivers were able to break New York tackles to get out of bounds and stop the clock and Brady's poise in the pocket on the third-down touchdown pass gave the Pats a 10-9 lead.

Before the last drive, the Giants were outgaining New England 185-76.

Congratulations to Canadiens’ Scott Gomez on the one-year anniversary of his last goal

05 Feb
2012

Today is big day for football fans, as Super Bowl XLVI kicks off at 6:29 P.M. ET. But February 5, 2012 is arguably almost as big a day for puckheads: one year ago today, Montreal Canadiens' centre Scott Gomez scored his last NHL goal.

According to DidGomezScore.com, at the time of this writing, it's been 365 days, 00 hours, 26 minutes, and 45 seconds since Gomez's last score, a game-winner versus the New York Rangers.

The online timer was especially valuable as we neared the official one-year anniversary, and not just because it provided entertainment and suspense as I waited for some sort of Y2K-esque meltdown the moment it reached the one-year mark. It was a very useful reference because, with eight minutes to go, the clock very nearly had to start over.

Midway through the second period versus the Winnipeg Jets, Gomez acted as the net presence on a Canadiens' powerplay, and when the puck got past Ondrej Pavelec, there was some debate over whether it had touched Gomez on the way through:

If it had, Gomez would have edged out the official one-year anniversary of his last goal by just under eight minutes.

Unfortunately, after an unnaturally long review -- clearly, the officials wanted to make especially sure they got this one right -- the goal was awarded to Tomas Plekanec. The Bell Centre booed the announcement.

But today is not a day for boos -- today is a day for kudos at this momentous and rare feat. Never in the history of the NHL has a $7.5 million forward gone a full calendar year without scoring a goal. Puck Daddy would like to officially congratulate Scott Gomez on his year of living goallessly.

In closing, join me, won't you, in a rousing rendition of 'Scott Gomez can't put anything in.'

Patriots heartlessly release Tiquan Underwood on the eve of Super Bowl XLVI

04 Feb
2012
by in Fantasy Football, General

Tiquan Underwood, the guy who loved being a Patriot so much that he did that to his hair, was released by the team on Saturday, just hours before the Super Bowl.

It's callous and it's cold-blooded, but that's football, and that's Bill Belichick. I'm sure that Underwood is emotionally devastated, but that's a head coach's job. If he feels like another player might help a little more on Sunday, even if it's just for one play, then it's the coach's job to make that decision. Feelings aren't a part of it.

[ Related: Predictions for how Patriots-Giants will play out in Super Bowl ]

Underwood probably didn't expect this, but he's no stranger to being released, either. It's the third time the Patriots have cut him this season.

What might make it even harder on the guy is that he didn't do anything wrong. And in an impressive four-tweet barrage following his release, Underwood put it all in perspective.

That, friends, is a class act.

According to the Boston Herald, the move has no disciplinary motive behind it. The Patriots simply wanted another defensive lineman on the roster. Alex Silvestro (ironically, like Underwood, a Rutgers product) is the guy who will take his place. He's been on the Patriots practice squad all season.

Belichick recently spoke glowingly of the Rutgers players on the Patriots roster, Underwood, Silvestro, Nate Jones and Devin McCourty.

"I think all four players are very team-oriented, and they come from a great program. I think that program has, under Coach (Greg) Schiano, prepared their players well for the NFL. I think if you look around the NFL, you see a lot of players from Rutgers in the league, not necessarily all of them are high draft choices like (Devin) McCourty, also including other players who were not drafted or lower draft choices. They've made teams, and I think that speaks to the preparation of that program in terms of getting players ready to play in the NFL — how to prepare, how to work, how to train, how to compete, how to play football similar to the way it is played in the NFL. Those four players have done a good job for us. In terms of the program, you can see those types of players on a lot of teams. When they get to the NFL, most of those players end up making it, at least for a while."

In the grand scheme of things, Underwood still has to count himself lucky. He was a part of a Super Bowl team. He experienced everything about Super Bowl week except for the Super Bowl itself. And if the Patriots go on to win, he'll still get a ring, and it will be just as big and shiny as Tom Brady's or Wes Welker's.

Ten things to know about Super Bowl XLVI halftime

04 Feb
2012
by in Fantasy Football, General

10. The NFL is ready to accept women again. Madonna is the first female invited to headline the Super Bowl halftime show since Janet Jackson did what she did back in 2004 (technically, last year's act, the Black Eyes Peas were 25% female, but I think we'd all like to just forget that happened). Madonna has guaranteed that there will be no wardrobe malfunctions, which is just as well, because if there's any part of Madonna you'd like to see, she likely exposed it publicly long ago.

9. Madonna is doing this for free (kind of). Curious about how much the NFL is paying Madonna for her services on Sunday? Nada. Madonna's doing this one for free. What she does get out of the deal is nearly immeasurable exposure. More than 110 million people are going to watch this, and she has 12 minutes to do whatever she wants. For comparison's sake, last week, 19.6 million people watched American Idol. As far as I know, American Idol doesn't just give away 12-minute segments to anyone who wants them. Perhaps not coincidentally …

8. Madonna has an album coming out in March. MDNA, Madonna's 12th studio album, will be available for purchase on March 26th. One single from the album, "Give Me All Your Luvin'" has been released, and you'll likely hear a portion of it performed on Sunday. You can see the football-themed video, featuring Nicki Minaj, right here.

7. It's not just Madonna, you know. Other musical acts will include the afore-mentioned Nicki Minaj, Cee-Lo Green, LMFAO, and M.I.A. If Roger Goodell likes them, perhaps they can get their own halftime show when they're 60. Several high school drumlines will also be involved, as will Cirque du Soleil. I don't know how anything will sound, but if the Cirque people are involved, it's at least going to be visually stunning.

[Video: Video: What to watch for in Super Bowl XLVI]

6. Madonna was not a particularly youthful selection. For her age, she looks amazing, but Madonna is still old enough to be the mother of the oldest player in Super Bowl XLVI. That would be Kevin Faulk, Patriots running back, who is 35. Madonna is 18 years older than Kevin Faulk.  When Madonna had her first number one hit, "Like A Virgin", Tom Brady was seven years old. Rob Gronkowski was still five years away from being born. Cris Collinsworth, who will be calling the game for NBC, was a fourth-year wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals.

5. If you tag the halftime show with your Shazam app, you get access to other nonsense. Shazam is all over the Super Bowl. If you've got a smartphone and the Shazam app, you can "tag" the halftime performance and get access to "exclusive content" by the artists performing during halftime. Various other advertisements will be Shazam-enabled, too, allowing you to enter contests and get wonderful offers. This is also the perfect way to announce to other guests, "I have a fancy smartphone and I care nothing about football."

4. Halftime gets stretched considerably. A normal regular-season halftime breezes by at just 12 minutes in length. The Super Bowl is more than double that at 31 minutes. Twelve of those will be occupied by Madonna, while the other 19 are for setting up and tearing down the stage. The Patriots have prepared themselves for the extended halftime by taking a 31-minute break in practice.

3. Tony Dungy would really rather you watched something else. The former Colts head coach and current NBC analyst has taped a three-minute video about adoption, and encourages you to download and watch it at halftime. You can find it here at AdoptionJourney.org, and I don't see any reason you couldn't watch it right now, or any other time you pleased. Or completely ignore it. Which is what I find myself often doing to Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison when they're on NBC.

2. Flushing the toilet at halftime is perfectly fine. There's an urban legend that our nation's sewer system is put on the brink of collapse during halftime of the Super Bowl, since so many people will be flushing at the same time. It's not. Who better to debunk this myth than the fine people at Roto-Rooter? They say it's fine ‒ municipal sewer systems are built to handle anything you can throw at them. Flush freely.

1. The "Girls Gone Wild" guy does not want you to hear "Girls Gone Wild." A bizarre legal battle is unfolding between two people who have both done their best to convince young women that it's cool to take their clothes off. One of the tracks on Madonna's new album is titled "Girls Gone Wild," and Joe Francis, the proprietor of the popular DVD series of the same name, has threatened to sue Madonna if she plays the song at halftime. TMZ, the only possible moderator between these two parties, says the song is not a part of Madonna's set list.

Post by Jay Busbee

It's Super Bowl time, and since nobody on the planet covers the Super Bowl better than Yahoo! Sports' Shutdown Corner (it's true), we brought on SC head honcho Doug Farrar to talk a bit o' football. Doug's a busy man, so we only got him for a few minutes, but he gave us the lowdown on the following:

• His prediction for the game. (Spoiler: someone's going to lose!)

• Which element of the Giants' offense/Patriots' defense (and vice versa) will determine the outcome of the game.

• Whether this is a referendum on the greatness of Eli Manning, and whether the Giants now have a dynasty in the making.

• How Peyton Manning could reshape the NFL as we know it ... or not.

• Whether he interviewed Madonna or Drew Brees.

From there, we segue into Super Bowl party tips, justifications for rooting for (or against) yet another Boston team win, the godawful ads, and so on. It's good stuff, and we think you will enjoy it. Really. We do.
