Jim Nantz gets the winner wrong after Patriots beat the Jets

22 Oct
2012

After Stephen Gostkowski booted a 43-yard field goal with 11:02 left in overtime, and the New York Jets failed to respond on their subsequent drive, the New England Patriots appeared to have a hard-fought 29-26 victory in hand. At that point, both teams walked to the middle of the field to exchange the usual post-game congratulations and condolences.

In the booth, however, CBS analyst Jim Nantz didn't seem so sure. Nantz, who's generally one of the better announcers in any sport, seemed to have a particularly difficult time accepting the result.

As referee Jeff Triplette walked back to the field to confirm Mark Sanchez's fumble, Nantz said that the game "was going to be a stunner -- the biggest underdog of the day in the league."

Erm, what?

"And the New York Jets stand alone in first place now ... the New England Patriots, I should say," Nantz went on, eventually correcting himself. "At 4-3 -- what an amazing game here!"

So amazing that the result befuddled at least one expert.

As we said, we're just having a bit of fun at Nantz's expense -- we're aware of a few guys who can't always seem to remember where they are on gameday, and Nantz isn't one of them.

One point of interest, though -- on the Rob Ninkovich sack of Sanchez that caused the fumble and subsequent Pats recovery, it certainly looks as if Patriots linebacker Jermaine Cunningham went low on Sanchez, tackled him below the knees, and engaged long enough for an official familiar with that particular point of emphasis to throw a flag and extend the Jets' drive.

No matter. Perhaps Triplette was wondering how he'd get out of Foxboro alive if he'd made that call.

Kobe Bryant tells A-Rod to stay confident, makes little sense

17 Oct
2012

While NBA fans focus on the upcoming beginning to the season, baseball fans are right in the thick of the end of their year. With only four teams remaining, one of the biggest stories has been the poor play and benching of New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, one of the best hitters in the history of the sport, as well as one of the most widely reviled. In truth, the vast majority of Yankees have been awful, but A-Rod's struggles have gotten the lion's share of media attention.

This qualifies as an NBA story because Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers legend and fellow lightning rod for criticism, counts A-Rod as a friend. He has even called him to lend support and give a useful pep talk. From Ramona Shelburne for ESPNLosAngeles.com:

"We spoke a couple of days ago," Bryant said of Rodriguez, whom he befriended on the set of a commercial a few years ago. "You can only control what you can control. You go out there and do the best job you can. If they take you out of the lineup, it's really on you to be a good teammate and support the other guys, which he's good about doing."

But that's not exactly what Bryant said when he called Rodriguez, who was benched for Game 3 on Tuesday night because he's hit .143 in the ALCS and .130 in the playoffs with no RBIs. No, that conversation went more like this:

"I just say to him, 'You're Alex Rodriguez. You're A-Rod. You're one of the best to ever do it,'" Bryant said. "I think sometimes he kind of forgets that and wants to try to do the right thing all the time. Which is the right team attitude to have. But other times you really have to put your head down and say, 'Hell with it' and just do your thing.

"Hopefully the next game they'll kind of give him a chance, maybe put him back at third and let him respond to the pressure, which I think he'll do." [...]

"We're different," Bryant said. "But you're talking about, 'He's one of the best to ever play.' I think really the difference is, sometimes he forgets he's the best. ... Where, I don't."

This talk sounds nice and thoughtful, but, as is always the case with Bryant, there are layers of intrigue well beyond the surface meaning. For instance, though Kobe praises A-Rod for remaining a team player on the bench, he also says there are times when a player has to say "hell with it" and do his own thing. It's a similar contradiction to the one Bryant mentioned in a recent Facebook post on leadership, in which he defines leadership as doing the right thing even when it's unpopular and subsequently claims he'd rather be known as a winner than a good teammate. What exactly does it mean to lead a group and also upset many of the people in that group?

Then, on top of that, Kobe put down his friend (even if with no malice) by saying he, a five-time champion, never forgets that he is the best. Or, in other words, that he has the mental strength to succeed no matter the struggles, whereas other great players don't. And although that might be true, it's also not the kind of thing most people say to prop up friends in need.

The context for this discussion, of course, is an entirely different sport than basketball, one where lots of individual successes more closely correlate to team success than in basketball. Bryant might have a point that A-Rod focusing on himself isn't necessarily the worst thing for the Yankees. (He should be in the lineup anyway, but that's a separate issue.) On the other hand, Kobe also doesn't seem to understand baseball at all, because last week he said that the Yankees' chemistry would eventually be hurt by Raul Ibanez's game-tying and walkoff homers against the Baltimore Orioles. You know, because he pinch-hit for A-Rod. That makes sense, right?

Kobe Bryant is one of the best NBA players ever. He is also one of the most complicated public figures in the world. I cannot imagine the NBA without him for both reasons.

Brook Lopez attends NY Comic Con, meets heroes, leaves teammate behind

16 Oct
2012

Twin big men Brook and Robin Lopez are well known as a little goofy, particularly for the overtly serious and tough mindset of the NBA. In this world, it's a little weird for a 7-footer to admit a love of "Sex and the City," or to willfully sport a Sideshow Bob haircut. On the other hand, that also makes them not terribly dissimilar from many NBA fans, especially those of us who toil in the blogosphere.

From a particular point of view, then, the Lopez twins are pretty endearing. And that's ultimately the takeaway from the subject of this post. This last Sunday, Scott Cacciola of The Wall Street Journal tagged along with Brooklyn Nets center Brook Lopez as he attended Comic Con at New York City's Javits Center. It's worth reading in full, but here's a sampling:

He's something of a celebrity in this world—but hardly the biggest. As Lopez wandered through the exhibits, Jim Lee and Dan DiDio, co-publishers of DC Comics, spotted him and waved him over to join them in their private, roped-off suite. Lopez got to know the two industry giants at a convention in Phoenix, back when his twin brother and fellow comic-book aficionado, Robin, was playing for the Suns. After hugging Lee, Lopez whipped out his cellphone.

"I have to show you this," he said as he scrolled through several photos. "To organize all my comics, I've been making custom cabinets." [...]

At least one of his teammates on the newly minted Brooklyn team was jealous. Carleton Scott, a forward, said he was upset that Lopez didn't invite him to come along. Like Lopez, Scott is a huge comic-book fan. "We have a lot of closet nerds on this team," Scott said. [...]

About a dozen Comic Con devotees who were waiting on a line craned their necks to gawk at this sudden intruder. "Who is he?" asked Catwoman, aka Brittany Holzherr, a 22-year-old NYU graduate. According to an unscientific survey, roughly 5% of Comic Con's attendees recognized Lopez. ("Oh, s---! That's Brook Lopez!") The other 95% remarked on his height. Those who did know who he was had the unsettling habit of reaching out to grab at one of his elbows.

What comes across most is that Lopez has true passion for comics. Cacciola mentions that Lopez also has plans to create his own work — something he mentioned to me when I interviewed him roughly five years ago, as well — and he also genuinely geeks out over getting to meet some of his favorite artists.

[Fantasy Basketball '12: Play the official game of NBA.com]

At the same time, Lopez remains the goofy guy we know him to be. It's also very Lopez-ish not to consider that a teammate might want to join him — because it's absent-minded, not because he did so with malice. Altogether, he comes across as a likable guy.

On the other hand, I'm not sure that means the other attendees should have tried to touch his elbows. That's just weird.

Throwing Darts: Can the desperate Packers spring an upset?

14 Oct
2012
by in General

The public's out there throwing darts at a board, sport. I don't throw darts at a board.

Wait a minute, yes I do.

Packers +3.5 at Texans: How good is Houston, really? Arian Foster is currently a 4.0 YPC back, and the much-ballyhooed offensive line (still ranked No. 1 on some subjective lists) doesn't look good on the spreadsheet; Pro Football Focus has the Texans 18th in run blocking this year and 15th in pass blocking. Houston comes into this game on short rest and without Brian Cushing, and the Packers are the more desperate team (an angle Bill Parcells would often bring up).

Dolphins -3.5 vs. Rams: While I have much respect for the Rams defense, I'm having trouble seeing how St. Louis scores more than 10 points on the road (unless something fluky happens on defense or special teams). Sam Bradford has once again been sold out by his receivers and offensive line. Meanwhile, Ryan Tannehill is the best rookie quarterback that you're hearing almost nothing about. His familiarity with the offense, dating back to the Texas A&M days, clearly shows on the tape. Miami rolls.

Broncos +1 at Chargers: You'll have to give a point or so with the Broncos in some other spots, but we use the Yahoo! Pro Football Pick-Em lines in this column, thus you see the plus-one here. It's not really a big deal crossing the equator. Peyton Manning looks more in sync with his offense with each passing week, and the Broncos pass rush might have a field day against the spotty Chargers offensive line (especially with LT Jared Gaither expected out). The Norv Turner offense still likes to throw those pretty intermediate and deep routes, but will the protection hold enough for those plays to develop?

Seahawks +3.5 vs. Patriots: As sharp as the Patriots have been on offense the last few weeks, it's a different challenge going on the road and taking on the Seahawks nasty defense and formidable home-field edge. Seattle can crash the pocket with or without gimmicks, and the secondary is the deepest (and the biggest) in the league. So long as Russell Wilson plays a clean game - and that's obviously no guarantee - I trust Seattle to keep things close or pull off the upset.

This Week: 1-0
Last Week: 1-4
Season: 18-8
2011: 41-39
2010: 49-34

Gretzky follows his heart; Lombardi fights hangover; David Booth still killing things (Puck Headlines)

12 Oct
2012

• David Booth kills Falcor the Luckdragon. And ManBearPig. And Alf. And the Lorax. [Pass it to Bulis]

• Amidst the doom and gloom, Wayne Gretzky still believes the season will begin by January. He believes it in his heart. "Yeah, in my heart, I do. I think first of all you have two smart people in the commissioner and the commissioner's office leading the ownership group and of course Donald Fehr leading the NHLPA. I really believe in my heart that in '04, changing the landscape, going to a salary cap was a real big issue and a real big fight. I think this one is more of a numbers issue. I see them getting something resolved here. I think both sides want to come to a resolution. I think right now both sides are doing the best negotiating they can do. So optimistically I still believe that everyone will be back playing hockey and I sure hope so. It's a great game. It gets better every year and we have great players and great athletes and good people in our game. I know the great fans across North America right now are dearly missing the sport of hockey." [Sports Radio Interviews]

• Dean Lombardi is concerned about the Stanley Cup hangover. "I talked to a number of teams, whether it was the 49ers, Yankees, Patriots, teams that were dynasties, and wanted to know what they did after the first year they won," Lombardi told ESPN.com this week. "I found so many different schools of thought." [ESPN]

• Speaking of the Kings, since their Stanley Cup banner won't be hanging from the rafters any time soon, here are some alternative uses it. Why, Dustin Penner could use it as a hammock! [The Royal Half]

• CTV has had to rename lockout "Big Bang Night in Canada" after CBC claims that it would "confuse" viewers. I'll say. There's nothing more embarrassing than thinking you're in for an evening of hardcore erotica on basic cable only to get two hours of Jim Parsons bein' quirky instead. [Financial Post]

• The Buffalo Sabres will be unveiling a French Connection statue tonight in Alumni Plaza. [WGRZ]

• Manny Malhotra takes a veiled shot at the players that have basically taken the "call me when the lockout's over" approach: "If you just want to bury your head and just go to the rink and play hockey and do nothing else, you're missing a world of the behind the scenes of what really goes into a CBA, what goes into the makeup of the league, how the league operates," he said. "It's an incredible learning experience." [Sportsnet]

• Kyle Quincey has signed with the Denver Cutththroats of the Central Hockey League. [Denver Post]

• Here's what Quebec's hockey arena will look like. Hold up, said the Phoenix Coyotes, you're allowed to populate it with CGI humans? Oh man, this changes everything.

• Deryk Engelland signs in Norway. [PHT]

• Brilliantly captioned gif: "Looks like Phil Kessel gained a bit of weight during the lockout." [Reddit Hockey]

• Ellen Etchingham offers up a passionate defence of fan protests during the lockout. [Backhand Shelf]

• On sponsors are advertisers looking for contingency plans in the event of the lockout. Friends: If the advertising budget is going to waste, I am willing to sport your brands for money. [The Globe & Mail]

• Mind-blowing: keeping hockey equipment clean is the key to keeping it from smelling. In other news, you will have less tartar buildup if you brush your teeth. [Vancouver Sun]

• Cute story here about a sixth-grade hockey player born without his right hand meeting a college goaltender born without his left. [Kansas City Star]

• What makes Connor McDavid so exceptional? It's skill, isn't it? Is it skill? [The Hockey Writers]

• And finally, the legendary Ian Walker stalks the streets of Vancouver in search of hockey fans passionate about the cancelled season. Can you believe that nun doesn't care? Some hockey fan she is.

Turnover in fantasy is a given. In this violent sport, any backup is one knee buckle away from relevancy. Last week, Cedric Benson, Donald Brown and Ryan Williams were bitten by the injury imp, paving the way for new point sources to emerge. How will their replacements perform?

On this week's prudent program, Scott Pianowski and Brad Evans delved into the Week 6 prospects of Alex Green, Vick Ballard and whoever the heck is going to carry the ball at a pedestrian pace for Arizona. Also, we revealed our sleepers, busts and Shocker Specials from every remaining game, played a game of over/unders and explained why Tony Romo is bound for a bounce-back.

Lacrosse is Like Hockey with Balls, according to Washington Stealth pro lax team’s new campaign

28 Sep
2012

Hockey may not have enormous popularity in the U.S. or TV-friendly action or a professional league with a functional financial system that doesn't lead to work stoppages like clockwork. What it does have: a reputation for being the toughest, roughest, most grueling sports around.

Which is why this boastful new campaign from a pro box lacrosse team is, well, ballsy:

The Washington Stealth are a National Lacrosse League team out of Everett, Wash. — sharing an arena with the Everett Silvertips major junior hockey team, and making quite a pitch to their fans and other puckheads.

"We went back and forth on this thing. We didn't want to offend hockey people, because we love hockey too," said Michael Kennett, Director of Communications for the Stealth.

Obviously, it's a glorious double-entendre; it's also shorthand for the type of lacrosse the Stealth play. "Box lacrosse" is indoor lacrosse whose roots are Canadian and whose origins are found on iceless hockey rinks.

"That's how our sport is most commonly referred to: 'Hockey on feet,'" said Kennett, who notes that fighting has a place in the NLL like it does in the NHL.

"Lacrosse has this perception of the preppy kid, white collar, a lot of money perception to it. But box lacrosse is nothing like it."

While the campaign could be quickly read as one sport questioning the testicular fortitude of another, the Stealth see the campaign as flattery. It's not just a pitch to the Silvertips and NHL fans in the arena — it's using the time-tested portrayal of hockey as barbarous and punishing sport as a calling card for box lacrosse.

"This isn't solely to reach out to the hockey fan. Quite frankly, we're not the No. 1 sport in Western Washington. Down in Seattle, we aren't No. 1 on their list. It's using hockey, which a lot of people can relate to, and saying we're like hockey, except we use a ball instead of a puck," said Kennett.

It's also not the first time the Stealth has made "Hockey With Balls" its battle cry. Witness the then-San Jose Stealth from 2009:

"It's incredibly intense. Very fast, very physical, and it takes a lot of balls to play," said Kennett.

But is it ballsier than hockey?

"I wouldn't know I would say it's a 'ballsier' sport," he said.

"I would say 'as ballsy.'"

Seve tops the 5 best Ryder Cup shots in history (The Associated Press)

26 Sep
2012

FILE - In this July 22, 1984, file photo, Spain's Severiano Ballesteros celebrates winning the British Open golf tournament at St. Andrews, Scotland. Longtime friend Jose Maria Olazabal revealed on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, that Europe is honoring the memory of Seve Ballesteros by putting his iconic image on its golf bags. The bags have a silhouette that depicts Ballesteros' reaction to winning the 1984 British Open at St. Andrews. This is the first Ryder Cup without Ballesteros, who died in May 2011. (AP Photo/File)

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) -- Whether it's sheer concentration, inspiration from the loudest gallery in golf or a willingness to deliver when the sport is more about country and continent than cash, the Ryder Cup tends to deliver more stunning shots in three days than most fans see in a month.

Politicians weigh in on the replacement ref issue

25 Sep
2012

Not that it will move either side per se, but the problems with replacement officials in the NFL have reached the point where politicians on every angle of the spectrum are using the issue to align themselves with a very large demographic of football fans.

[Michael Silver: The worst call in NFL history? | Photos]

We'll start at the top of the food chain, and work our way down. From the POTUS:

This isn't the first time Obama has mentioned the problem. The Prez is a longtime Chicago Bears fan, and he discussed the officials' lockout with Bill Willis of WTAM in Cleveland last week.

"One thing I've got to say, though ... is it just me or do we have to get our regular refs back? I can't get involved in it, but I'm just expressing my point of view as a sports fan."

We'll see what happens if the Bears lose a game due to a bad call -- Obama may be a bit more pleased that the NFC North rival Packers are now 1-2 because of what happened on Monday night.

-- The most proactive member of the political race is New Jersey State Senate President Steve Sweeney, who has announced that he wants to block replacement referees from working NFL games in his state. From his statement:

"This past weekend in the NFL has not only made a mockery of a great sport, but shined a very bright light on how important fully trained and professional officiating is to player safety. We wouldn't allow a factory or construction site to operate without fully trained supervisors on hand to ensure the safety of employees. Why should we do anything differently when the job site is a playing field?

"Whether the sport is football, soccer or baseball, when referees don't know how to properly enforce the rules, there is a real chance for unnecessary and serious injury. If the NFL insists on putting replacement officials on the field, putting players at risk, then the state shouldn't be playing a part in that."

[Dan Wetzel: Roger Goodell needs to immediately clean up officiating mess]

--That makes more sense than the take given by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, long a vocal and noted foe of unions of any kind. Walker changed his tune when it came to the effect the Packers' loss had on his own constituents.

"After catching a few hours of sleep, the Packers game is still just as painful. Return the real refs," Walker said via his Twitter account.

Of course, Walker's office had to clarify that the governor wasn't actually changing his tune.

"I don't think this [has] anything to do with unions, but has everything to do with refs making bad calls," spokesman Cullen Werwie said.

Well, it sort of does. The officials were locked out when the old collective bargaining agreement expired, and the NFL and NFL Referees Association could not come to terms. If it's not a union issue, it's certainly a grandstanding issue, and the Packers themselves would agree with that. When there were recall elections in June, and Walker's name was on the ballot, several Packers players encouraged state voters to boot Walker out of office.

You see, most NFL players kinda like the whole union idea.

[More: Seattle-Green Bay TD call could have altered $250 million in bets]

-- Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan, now a Republican vice-president nominee, managed to tie Monday night's result to the Obama economic effort.

"Give me a break. It's time to get the real refs, and it reminds me of President Obama and the economy. If you can't get it right, it's time to get out."

It is not known how Ryan would settle the current labor impasse, but given his alleged history with unions, anyone criticizing the negotiating process might want to watch their backs.
