02 Oct
2012
Oct 2 (Reuters) - Ian Poulter has been the heartbeat of Europe's team in the last three Ryder Cups and said on Tuesday he would not swap his memories from the biennial event for a maiden victory in a major championship. Captain Jose Maria Olazabal compared the 36-year-old Englishman to the late, great Seve Ballesteros after Europe produced a remarkable fightback from 10-6 down to beat the United States 14-1/2 to 13-1/2 in Chicago on Sunday. "I haven't won a major and everyone keeps telling me I haven't won a major," Poulter told the American television channel CNBC. ...

MEDINAH, Illinois (Reuters) - Inspired by the spirit of Seve Ballesteros, Europe pulled off one of the greatest comebacks on a golf course to beat the United States and win the Ryder Cup by 14-1/2 points to 13-1/2 on Sunday. Needing to claim eight points in the concluding singles to retain the trophy, Europe won six of the first eight encounters before Germany's Martin Kaymer secured the vital point to retain the Cup by beating Steve Stricker one up. ...

MEDINAH, Illinois (Reuters) - Europe captain Jose Maria Olazabal saw the last great Ryder Cup comeback victory first-hand, so the Spaniard knows that overcoming their 10-6 deficit against the U.S. is possible. Olazabal was on the 17th green at Brookline when the Americans won the 1999 Ryder Cup after entering Sunday singles trailing by four points to register a record comeback for the biennial event. "I believe that it's not over," said Olazabal on Saturday, continuing to draw inspiration from great friend and mentor Seve Ballesteros, who died last year at age 54 after a battle with cancer. ...

Column: Recession unleashes pain on Spanish sport (The Associated Press)

File - In this Oct. 29, 2008 file photo, Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain practices in a bunker ahead of the Volvo Masters golf tournament that went on to be known as the Andalucia Masters after a name change, at the Valderrama course in Sotogrande, Spain. With its array of courses and short-sleeves climate, Spain made a natural home for professional golf. In 2011, the land of Seve Ballesteros hosted seven European Tour tournaments, more than any other country. Next year, that could plummet to just one, the Spanish Open. Deep in recession, with unemployment near 25 percent, putting up purses to entice golf's big names is a luxury Spain can ill-afford. Government tourist boards that bankrolled tournaments to sell Spain as a destination and companies that provided sponsorship often no longer have the money or do not want to be seen spending it on golf when Spaniards are so squeezed financially. MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) -- Every time a European player reaches for a club during the Ryder Cup, it's almost as if Seve Ballesteros were still looking on. A year after his death, the Spaniard's fist-pumping silhouette is emblazoned front and center on their golf bags, a reminder to a new generation why this event came to matter so much in the first place.
