Red contacts! Bryce Harper eyes different look

Is Bryce Harper the newest cast member in those "Twilight" movies? Nope, he's still a ballplayer. He just has red eyes now. Harper came into Game 3 of the NLDS with one hit and six strikeouts in 10 at-bats. No, he hasn't been overanxious at the plate! Why do you ask? But he probably wanted to change something up in order to get going for the rest of the series.

Naturally, the 19-year-old phenom inserted red contact lenses Wednesday to cover up his naturally baby blue eyes.

These kids in Major League Baseball today, with their scary makeup, funny haircuts and red devil eyes! Would that nice boy Tim Tebow ever wear red devil eyes? No, he would not.

Well, he actually might, if it helped him see. Harper's lenses, as MLB Network reporter Sam Ryan and others pointed out, are tinted red in order to have a sunglasses-like effect. Nationals Park was awash in sunlight for the 1:07 p.m. ET first pitch, so it was as good of a time as any for Harper to go red. He's not only going for a Marilyn Manson shock effect here, people!

Harper started Game 3 by going 0 for 3, but he made solid contact and hit a deep fly in his first at-bat. He flied out in his second at-bat, too. Popped out for his third. Not ideal outcomes, but better than whiffing.

He's not the first pro athlete, or even baseball player, to wear tinted contacts. But he's Bryce Harper and Bryce Harper with red eyes makes for a compelling picture. As does this:

Josh Hamilton, Brandon Inge and Bronson Arroyo have tried the red-eye look, too. That's an impish grin on Inge, there.

Carlos Beltran hits two postseason homers, creates different feeling for Cards fans

08 Oct
2012

After being punished by Carlos Beltran's bat in Octobers past, the St. Louis Cardinals finally got to appreciate his power from a different and better angle on Monday.

Beltran belted two of the Cardinals' four home runs during the team's 12-4 series-tying win over the Washington Nationals in NLDS Game 2 at Busch Stadium. They were the first postseason homers for Beltran in a Cardinals uniform but far from the first he's hit with the birds and bat in attendance.

As noted by Derrick Goold of the St. Loius Post-Dispatch, seven of Beltran's 13 postseason home runs have come against St. Louis Cardinals pitchers. He hit four against the Cardinals in the 2004 NLCS as a member of the Houston Astros during his insane postseason run and then  another three in the 2006 NLCS as a member of the New York Mets.

Of course, the Cardinals had the last laugh advancing to the World Series each of those years and the overwhelming memory of Beltran in that 2006 NLCS is of the outfielder looking at the last strike of Game 7. Six years later, St. Louis fans would like nothing better than to see Beltran exorcise those World Series demons by helping the Cardinals defend their title.

Beltran's homers came in the sixth and eighth inning and were absolute blasts that were estimated at about 440 feet apiece. The emergence of his power was a welcome sight for Cardinals fans after Beltran hit only 12 homers in the second half (as compared to 20 in the first).

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

"That's really exciting to see," [Allen] Craig said. "He's done that a number of times this season: put us on his shoulders and carried us. When we've got Carlos swinging like that it's a lot of fun to watch."

"When Carlos is patient and sees a bunch of pitches, he is very dangerous," said hitting coach Mark McGwire, well aware of Beltran's first-pitch tendencies.

Beltran's 13 homers tie him for the 11th spot on the all-time postseason list with Jayson Werth, Alex Rodriguez, Chipper Jones and Jim Edmonds. If he hits more, a good postseason run could mean tying or passing David Justice and Nelson Cruz (14), Babe Ruth (15) or even Jim Thome (17). Unlike all the contemporary names just listed, Beltran doesn't have a single World Series appearance to his name to help pad those numbers.

Yet if he puts a few more over the wall the next few weeks, that could change in a big way.

Makes sure you have all your bases covered this postseason ...

Jameer Nelson no longer likes Superman, does not mention Dwight Howard

05 Oct
2012

A lot has changed in Orlando now that Dwight Howard is no longer a member of the Magic. Their expectations have gone way down, new players are being asked to step up, and the team culture is in the process of shifting. It's an ongoing process, and we're only starting to see some of the changes now.

Take, for instance, longtime Magic point guard Jameer Nelson. He and Howard entered the NBA together, so Nelson has known no other NBA reality than playing next to a dominant or soon-to-be-dominant big man. He will need to adjust, and we don't know exactly what or how much will change.

Earlier indications are that Nelson will change quite a bit, both on the court and in his personal preferences. In fact, he's even changed his favorite superhero. From John Denton of OrlandoMagic.com on Twitter (via PBT):

In all seriousness, it's easier to understand Nelson's change of heart. Superman is an iconic character, but he also can be a little dull in his ability to do literally anything as long as kryptonite is not around. And while that one weakness is meaningful, it's also largely external, more a function of circumstances than the character himself. I am sympathetic to the argument that the creation of Clark Kent gives Superman depth, but it doesn't hold up: Superman was raised as Clark Kent, and he professes belief in the human race so often that any animosity towards it would have to be buried incredibly deep in his subconscious. If Kryptonians even have a subconscious!

Wait, what's that? Dwight Howard uses "Superman" as a nickname? Well, that changes everything.

David Price becomes 15th member of ‘The Black Aces,’ first 20-game winner in Tampa Bay history

01 Oct
2012

David Price became the first 20-game winner in Tampa Bay Rays history on Sunday, pitching seven strong innings in a 6-2 win over the Chicago White Sox.

The tall lefty also earned another cool honor with the victory, becoming the 15th member of "The Black Aces" — a group started by Jim "Mudcat" Grant and comprised only of African-American pitchers who have won 20 games in a season.  Don Newcombe became the first member on the list with 20 wins for the 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers and CC Sabathia was the last member to be admitted with 21 victories for the 2010 New York Yankees.

The rest of the list is obviously strong. In addition to Price, Grant, Newcombe and Sabathia, there's Vida Blue, Al Downing, Bob Gibson, Ferguson Jenkins (even though he's Canadian), Dwight Gooden, Sam Jones, Mike Norris, J.R. Richard, Dave Stewart, Earl Wilson and Dontrelle Willis.

Price's 2012 has been the strongest season of the 27-year-old's career and it has put him right into the middle of the AL Cy Young debate. He's leading the league with a 2.56 ERA and has a 205 strikeouts to his name. Though the Rays' bid for the postseason may come up short, it'll be no fault of Price's. He's 9-1 with a 2.27 ERA in 14 games since the All-Star break.

From the Associated Press:

Asked who he would vote for if he could cast a ballot for the AL Cy Young, Price wasn't shy. ''I would vote for myself,'' he said.

And [manager Joe] Maddon agreed with his ace lefty. ''The 20 wins, he should have like 25 wins,'' Maddon said. ''He's pitched well enough to have mid-20s based on our lack of scoring runs sometimes. The ERA is highly impressive, pitching in this division, this league, the DH. ... It all matters. To be able to accomplish that here is quite an accomplishment.''

Maddon isn't exaggerating much. There were two no-decisions in August when the Rays dropped 1-0 contests to Kansas City and Baltimore. Three other no-decisions came after Price had gone seven innings allowing three or less runs.

Of course, we all know that wins are a flawed statistic that can often be the product of situation and circumstance. So Maddon can't bemoan the relative injustice that much. It is cool, however, that situation and circumstance worked for Price's benefit 20 times so that he was able to make some history in Chicago on Sunday. Earning your way into a group as small as The Black Aces is a pretty cool accomplishment.

Doug Fister throws nine straight strikeouts, says he was unaware he set AL record

27 Sep
2012

Detroit Tigers pitcher Doug Fister set an American League record on Thursday, going through the entire Kansas City Royals lineup and issuing each member a strikeout in consecutive fashion. The nine straight strikeouts — spanning from Salvador Perez as the last out of the fourth to Billy Butler for the second out of the seventh inning — surpasssed the previous record of eight, set by several pitchers. Tom Seaver owns the National League record with 10.

Not that Fister knew he had etched his name into the history books with his feat. Prince Fielder approached him as the pair walked off the field in the seventh inning and Fister simply shook him off like a pesky telemarketer:

''Honestly, I had no idea,'' Fister told reporters. ''(Fielder) was yelling at me to step off during the inning, and I kind of looked at him. Normally, he'll do that, to slow me down, if I'm getting too quick. ... I thought that was kind of what he was doing there. He just said, 'Hey, step off.' I look at him, and he kept looking at me, and he said, 'Aw, I'll tell you later.'''

Fister ended up striking out 10 batters and allowing three runs over 7 2/3 innings of work as the Tigers overcame the Royals' late effort to tie it and earned a 5-4 walkoff win at Comerica Park.  The victory increased Detroit's AL Central lead over the White Sox to two games after Chicago fell to Tampa Bay later Thursday night.
