Potential NHL Seattle owner talks relocation vs. expansion

20 Sep
2012

When the Seattle City Council and investor Chris Hansen closed their deal on a new $490 million arena this month, the chance that an NHL team could call the Pacific Northwest city home increased exponentially.

Council member Mike O'Brien told the Vancouver Sun that he was surprised by "how much excitement there was for (an) NHL team in the stuff I heard from people." Couple that with an estimated $80 million difference in city funding between an arena with just an NBA team ($120 million) vs. one with NBA and NHL teams ($200 million), and the prospects further increase.

Now that the arena question has been answered, we arrive at the next vital query about the NHL in Seattle: Who would own a team?

The frontrunner has always been AHL Chicago Wolves owner Don Levin, who wants a franchise and whom Elliotte Friedman reported is in the NHL's good graces.

So now it's just a matter of moving a troubled franchise to Seattle, right?

Not exactly, Levin told Craig Custance of ESPN The Magazine.

From Custance (behind the dreaded ESPN Insider Paywall):

"I can tell you there are not teams for sale that are available to move," Levin told ESPN the Magazine on Wednesday.

Not the Coyotes? Or maybe one day the Islanders? "My understanding is that the Phoenix deal, [Greg Jamison] has come up with the money," Levin said. "The answer to the Islanders moving is never. They're not moving out of that market. No chance that's going to happen."

Instead, Levin's plan centers on expansion. And he's optimistic it won't be long after the CBA is settled that the NHL will turn to expansion as the next phase in growing the league. "I would think three years," he said.

The NHL's realignment plan, which was agreed upon during last December's board of governors meeting, certainly made it easy to plug in two more franchises. Levin thinks Seattle would be considered one of the front-runners to land a new team. "There's Quebec and Las Vegas that are also in there," he said.

Much more from Custance here. Hey, good news for Islanders fans at the very least.

As I've said before, my pet theory is that Seattle gets a relocated franchise and that Quebec and Greater Ontario (i.e. a second Toronto team) are the ones who shovel money into the NHL's account for an expansion fee. But Levin is thinking expansion rather than relocation for his potential Seattle team. (Which, of course, will be called the Sasquatch, per our request.)

Either way, there's no question that Seattle should be at the front of the list of U.S. cities prepared to welcome the NHL, with apologies to Las Vegas, Houston and those perpetual bridesmaids in Kansas City.

Brian Burke says ESPN ‘stinks’ after they name Maple Leafs as pro sports’ worst franchise

10 Sep
2012

Last week, ESPN The Magazine — and please don't confuse it with ESPN The Breakfast Cereal or ESPN The Floor Wax — published its "ultimate standings," which ranked teams in the NBA, MLB, NHL and NFL from one to 122.

Coming in at No. 122, a.k.a. dead-ass last: The Toronto Maple Leafs, reaching the basement level that had been predestined by their finishing no better than 120th since 2008.

The Toronto Maple Leafs. The worst franchise in professional sports.

Say, you think Brian Burke might have something to say about this recent evaluation of his franchise and its virtue?

The Leafs GM met with reporters at a charity golf tournament on Monday, and Sean Fitz-Gerald of the National Post had his delightful retort to the WWL and its ultimate standings:

"I don't think ESPN knows a single thing about hockey.* I think their hockey coverage stinks. I don't think they know anything about Canada.** I don't think they know anything about hockey."

Is it too late to set up a College Bowl quiz show with Pierre LeBrun, Scott Burnside and Craig Custance on one side and Burke, Dave Nonis and Rick Dudley on the other to definitely test hockey knowledge?

[Also: Bruins, Tyler Seguin agree to six-year, $34.5 million extension]

This isn't the first time Burke has trashed ESPN, mind you.

In 2010, when we still had folks around the NHL pining for a return to the WWL rather than having the League's U.S. cable games on VERSUS, Burke told AOL FanHouse:

"ESPN dumped us," Burke said. "Everybody talks about getting back on ESPN, but I think Versus has been a great broadcast partner. I think their production is excellent and their distribution has increased."

… "I felt when we were on ESPN that they buried us on the SportsCenter package anyhow," Burke said. "We were on right after drag racing and other things."

So yeah, not exactly a history of admiration between Brian Burke and ESPN to begin with, let alone after its magazine named his team a model of futility.

Hopefully this doesn't garner a response from ESPN, sparing us from the forced banter between Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless about it or the forced banter between Mike and Mike about it or the forced banter ...

* Buccigross excluded. C'mon, that's inferred.

** For the record, ESPN probably doesn't know much about Canada. ESPN Classic, however, must, given its collection of lumberjack competitions, AWA Wrestling and occasional punditry debates about Wayne Gretzky's unbreakable records vis-a-vie those of Michael Jordan.

Rajon Rondo is interning at GQ during NYC Fashion Week

06 Sep
2012

As we learned many times during the 2012 NBA playoffs, this generation of basketball players is very fashion-forward, and not always in recommendable ways. Russell Westbrook got most of the attention for his zany shirts and unnecessary glasses, others from Dwyane Wade (whose trousers purchases match those of his significant other) to Amar'e Stoudemire (who has plans to start a fashion website) have marked themselves out as budding fashionistas.

Within that group, Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo has stood out as both an exceedingly adventurous dresser and someone who maybe needs a little help. For instance, there's something both impressive and disturbing about this particular jacket, which makes Rondo look like a villain in some sci-fi adaptation of "Dick Tracy."

[Related: Brian Scalabrine says he's likely retiring, will pursue broadcasting]

Regardless, what we know is that Rondo wants to explore fashion in all its forms. And so, this month, he is working as an intern for GQ Magazine during New York City's Fashion Week. From Mark Anthony Green for the magazine's website:

Fashion Week is our busiest time of year--between the shows, presentations and, ya know, posing. We needed a little help, someone to run point back at home base and on the ground floor at Lincoln Center. Who better than NBA All-star—and all around stylish dude—Rajon Rondo? Rajon will be interning at GQ for the next few days, helping our game out and learning a thing or two about menswear and the magazine industry. You'll see interviews, critiques, and blog post from the future hall-of-famer popping up all week. And from the tip-off of his time on our team, it doesn't seem like he left his competitive instinct back in Beantown. Other interns, beware.

As of right now, all we have from the Rondo/GQ team-up is the photo above and some more shots on Rondo's Facebook page. Here's hoping we see Rajon helping out on features about designer sweatpants and how to wear monkstraps. At the very least, we know he is strong enough to carry a bunch of bags from shoot to shoot.

Then, if editors really let him cut loose, maybe he'll get to write his own feature on how to match three patterns at once in the same jacket. That's true high-level style.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are the worst team, period, according to ESPN The Magazine

06 Sep
2012

I can't decide whether to envy this kid's optimism or pity its eventual demise.

For the 10th straight year, ESPN The Magazine has released its  Ultimate Standings, a list that ranks every professional sports team in the NBA, MLB, NHL and NFL from 1st to 122nd.

And, for the first time since the inaugural list in 2003, when the Columbus Blue Jackets landed at the bottom, a hockey team is in the basement. That team: the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are worse than the Sacramento Kings, which is the worst kind of worst.

How did this unfortunate thing happen? By what criteria could the Maple Leafs be the worst franchise in the NHL, let alone all of North American sport?

Using a combination of fan voting, a poll conducted by consulting firm Maddock Douglas, and researchers at the University of Oregon's Warsaw Sports Marketing Center, ESPN (which stands for Extremely Scientific Polls Network) ranked franchises over the following eight categories:

Bang For The Buck (BNG): Wins during the past three years (regular season plus postseason) per revenues directly from fans, adjusted for league schedules.

Fan Relations (FRL): Openness and consideration toward fans by players, coaches and management.

Ownership (OWN): Honesty and loyalty to core players and local community.

Affordability (AFF): Price of tickets, parking and concessions.

Stadium Experience (STX): Quality of arena and game-day promotions as well as friendliness of environment.

Players (PLA): Effort on the field and likability off it.

Coaching (CCH): Strength of on-field leadership.

Title Track (TTR): Championships already won or expected in the lifetime of current fans.

Oh. OK, that sort of makes sense.

The Leafs finished at the bottom of the standings in both BNG and AFF, and they were second to last in PLA and TTR. And looking at where the Leafs finished in the eight categories compared to 121st Sacramento, it wasn't even close.

But don't feel too disheartened, Leaf fans. This is a breakthrough four years in the making.

The Leafs have finished no better than 120th since 2008, but they've never been last before. In 2008, they were edged out by the New York Knicks. In 2009, it was the Knicks and the L.A. Clippers. In 2010, only the Clippers remained, and in 2011, the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins beat them out.

But in 2012, the Leafs reign the polar opposite of supreme.

All told, the Coyotes were the top-ranked NHL franchise on the list, so take this with a grain of salt.

Check out the full list here. Friendly warning: The table is kind of glitchy. Occasionally the 2012 rankings disappear altogether. And sometimes the Phoenix Coyotes are in first.

Leave your wedding cards in this depressing Nassau Coliseum-shaped gift box (PHOTO)

25 Aug
2012

Nassau Coliseum is not loved. "There is probably no worse major-league facility right now in North America than the Nassau Coliseum," Gary Bettman said in 2009, though a May Time Magazine article disagreed, naming Nassau only North America's second-worst. Charles Wang has been trying to get his club out of there for years.

But while Nassau gets no love, it has managed to help two people find it. Newlywed couple Sarah and Mike got together while working at Nassau (perhaps out of a deep-seated need for some emotion to override the despair of being in it).

And in honour of their heinously situated meet cute, their friend Bryan made them the gift box above.

I'm not particularly sure why you'd publicize a meeting at Nassau. Isn't that sort of embarrassing, like telling people you met while married to separate people?

The image of this depressing receptacle comes to us via Deadspin, who also have a second image in which you can read the placard at the replica arena's base. "They found love in a hopeless place", it says.

Hopeless indeed. Here's what Katie Baker had to say about Nassau last summer. From Grantland:

Built in 1972, the Coliseum is the second-oldest NHL arena behind only Madison Square Garden (which is currently undergoing extensive renovations that will span several summers.) The roof leaks. Chairs and fixtures are beginning to crumble. The air-conditioning system is wonky, and that means the ice surface is, too. If The Coliseum sounds like some sort of torture chamber that's because it basically is, complete with a victim who has been chained up, ball-gagged, and held hostage for years within the arena's cold depths: the Islanders franchise.

Good Lord. Because nothing says "new marriage" like a torturous, crumbling institution in which everyone inside feels like a hostage and desperately wants out.

Anyway. For contrast, here's an aerial view of Nassau Coliseum, so you can see what a good job Bryan did.

Now, if only Bryan wasn't the only one in Long Island working hard on a new stadium, maybe the Islanders wouldn't be stuck where they are.

s/t to Deadspin.

Vanessa Bryant does ‘not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships’

16 Aug
2012

Kobe Bryant's wife Vanessa filed for divorce last winter after claiming that the two's differences were irreconcilable, but the two eventually rekindled their union and appear to be on good terms. And, after a tough initial run together that featured an infamous bout of public infidelity, it appears as if Vanessa's good terms are going to be on her terms. She wants rings, she'll have you know. Don't bother even leaving the house if you're not going to come back with one.

From a New York Magazine transcription from Sports on Earth's Nicki Jhabvala, as tipped off to us by The Basketball Jones:

"I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can't win championships. If you're sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year."

Perhaps someone should tell Vanessa Bryant that showcasing a good work ethic that sometimes leaves you away from the home for long stretches doesn't always lead to championships. It just means you're probably going to be good at your job.

[Related: Vanessa Bryant reps blast report she had plastic surgery to keep Kobe happy]

Here is where you can go into the, "perhaps if Vanessa Bryant had a job …"-territory, but don't. She's raising two daughters, which is a full time gig that is to be respected. We should just ask that she choose her words more carefully, I suppose. She entered into a union with Bryant knowing full well that NBA players spend half a season on the road, and that stars of Bryant's caliber spend untold days and weeks overseas fulfilling sponsorship duties. You know, all the stuff that leads to all those houses and all those cars and even helicopters; things that sometimes only lead to a 45-win record despite 35 points per game. Kobe can shoot a thousand jumpers every summer afternoon, but it's not going to mean much if he still has to team up with Smush Parker in the fall.

It's easy to understand what Vanessa is getting at, but she can't have it both ways here. It's true that Kobe Bryant's work ethic might be unmatched amongst NBA players, but it's a gig that keeps you away from home regardless of championship potential. Add in the fact that this is a team game and that no star (no matter how great, or how many hours put in) can win a championship just about by himself, and you're left with a pretty silly statement.

We can't say we're especially looking forward to reading the rest of this interview when the New York Magazine hits the newsstands.

Report: Patriots ask Rob Gronkowski to stop being so Gronk

16 Jul
2012
by in Fantasy Football, General

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski enjoys a good party. He is, as the old saying goes, fiesta. He makes no secret of his love of a good time, and he is not shy around television cameras.

Maybe not so much anymore. The Boston Globe quotes a league source as saying that the Patriots would like for Gronk to stop being so Gronk.

After posing nude for ESPN The Magazine's "Body Issue" and partying at events for the issue and the ESPYs (Gronkowski was up for two awards but was shut out), and co-hosting "Access Hollywood Live" in recent days — things that seem un-Patriot-like — don't be surprised if he lays low for the next couple of weeks.

Via a league source, Gronkowski has been told by the team that his summer of Gronk, so to speak, is over.

On behalf of everyone, I say this to the Patriots: Booooooooo.

Through his many Gronktacular activities over the last year, no one's ever accused the man of not being dedicated to his job. No one's ever said he doesn't work hard, and we know he stays in shape because he is compulsively shirtless (and now branching out into pantsless).

I'm sure that by the time training camp rolled around, Gronkowski's priorities would've been in the right place. I trust him to make that judgment.

Also, isn't it a little bold for Robert Kraft to be playing the "let's tone it down" card right now?

I say we need more Gronks out there (not literally, of course ‒ there are already plenty). I don't even mean that we need more shirtless party boys who are shocked by virginity and unencumbered with self-awareness. I think we need more athletes willing to be themselves in public. That's the real gift of Gronk. That's what he gives us that so few athletes are willing to give. Don't take that from us, Patriots.
