Cardinals fans seem happy that Albert Pujols won’t be appearing in the playoffs

With one more victory or a Los Angeles Dodgers loss, the St. Louis Cardinals will clinch their second trip to the postseason in as many years. Now, is there a chance their journey might only last one day with a loss to the Atlanta Braves in Friday's wild-card play-in game spelling doom for the defending World Series champions? Yes. Yes there is.
But at least the Cardinals are probably going to reach that one-game chance, which is more than you can say for their old pal Albert Pujols. (Don't Call Me) El Hombre and his Los Angeles Angels were eliminated from postseason contention when Oakland sealed its win over Texas on Monday, ensuring that Pujols will have extra time this fall to spend the $240 million that lured him to Disneyland last offseason.
As you might imagine, this fact is playing pretty well in Peoria:
Regardless of what happens the next few days, St. Louis fans have to feel a little bit vindicated for not completely losing it when Pujols flew the Cardinals coop for richer pastures. Though there were plenty of sayonaras like the one above, the fan base's party line was that the franchise was strong enough to survive the departure and they've been more or less proven right. That's not to say the 2012 St. Louis Cardinals would not have been a better team with Pujols around, just that they were able to withstand the (correct) decision not to commit so much money to an aging superstar reasonably well.
Now excuse a few of their fans while they gloat about it a bit ...

The Juice: Athletics clinch playoffs, Cardinals do not (yet)

The Juice is back for its fifth season of fun! Stop by each weekday for an ample serving of news from the action, plus great photos, stats and video highlights.
Moneyballin': The Oakland Athletics still have their sights set on the Texas Rangers and first place in the AL West. But for a team that almost everybody picked to be bad, they at least know they're in the playoffs for a game. And that's pretty sweet. Coco Crisp hit a go-ahead double in the fifth inning, and the A's beat the Rangers 4-3 on Monday night to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2006.
Watch the last out:
Crisp is 9 for 17 with seven runs scored, three doubles and three stolen bases since coming back from pink eye in both eyes. Oakland's victory also knocked out the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Angels. With two games to play, the A's trail the Rangers by one game for the division title, which would offer the security of the ALDS.
Birds are prey: The entire playoff field is set except for the second NL wild-card spot, which the Cardinals can clinch with one more victory or a Dodgers defeat. St. Louis did its work, beating the Reds 4-2 behind left-hander Jaime Garcia to clinch a tie for the wild-card spot. Garcia allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings and he hit a home run against Bronson Arroyo. The Dodgers kept pace thanks to a 3-2 win against the Giants. Elian Herrera provided a game-ending single with the bases loaded in the ninth to key their sixth straight victory. They'll need a lot more help in the next two days in order to join the playoff field.
Triple dog dare: The biggest threat to Miguel Cabrera winning the Triple Crown might be his main competition for MVP, Mike Trout. He went 4 for 5 and raised his batting average to .325, four points short of Cabrera, in an 8-4 victory at Seattle. But the performance was not enough to keep the Angels from being eliminated from the playoff race. After spending big bucks to bring in Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson, the Angels got off to a miserable start — 8-15, and were nine games out of first place in May. Trout came up in late April and sparked the team with perhaps the best rookie performance ever, but only occasionally did the Angels collectively get it done.
Yankee foxtrot Baltimore: The Yankees pulled ahead in the AL East by a game, routing the Red Sox 10-2 and watching as the Orioles fell 5-3 to the Rays. New York powered ahead with a nine-run second inning, and CC Sabathia did his thing on the mound to help New York keep pushing for what would be their 13th division title in 17 years. At Tropicana Field, Tampa Bay won for the 11th time in 12 games, outscoring their opponents 80-31 in that span. Joe Maddon's boys would be the hottest team going into the playoffs, had they made them. But overall, the Rays were overcome by semi-miraculous and wonderful seasons to remember by the Orioles and A's.

Three Facts for the Water Cooler
• The White Sox won for just the third time in 13 games, clobbering the Indians 11-0, but were eliminated from the AL Central race.
• The Washington Nationals wrapped up the first playoff appearance for a D.C. team in 79 years, despite falling 2-0 to the Phillies.
• Two-hit by Astros right-hander Lucas Harrell, the Cubs reached 100 losses for the first time since 1966. Hey, that's probably longer than you thought it took them.

The Juice: Pirates clinch 20th straight losing season, three AL teams advance to playoffs

21 not allowed: After creating such promise by soaring 16 games above .500 as recently as two months ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates crashed back to Earth again. On Sunday, they lost their 82nd game, falling 4-3 to the Reds to ensure the Bucs would finish with a losing record for the 20th straight season. Sunday also marked the 40th anniversary of Roberto Clemente's 3,000th career hit. Clemente, of course, wore No. 21. For the Pirates to be losers again next season, it would mean 21 straight years of futility. They wouldn't dare, right?
In the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, columnist Dejan Kovacevic says team owner Bob Nutting promises an investigation, and no matter what he finds, he can't allow the Pirates to be losers again in 2013. That means big changes, even if it involves replacing GM Neal Huntington, manager Clint Hurdle or the lot of them:
Listen to this quote from Huntington on his radio show eight days ago: "There are a lot of really good baseball people in the industry who feel very differently than our fans do about what we're accomplishing."
Does that sound like a group open-minded to big change?
One that's so insular, so arrogant in its thinking that the head of baseball operations publicly expresses that the Pirates' fans aren't savvy enough to grasp the nuances of the team's successes?
After five years, all it takes is a copy of the standings, right?
You, and you, and you: Three teams punched their postseason tickets — the Orioles, Rangers and Yankees — thanks to a loss by the Los Angeles Angels, who split a doubleheader against Texas. That doesn't mean the Angels are eliminated, just that they'd need a lot of help to overtake the Athletics and Rays. How much help? Here's a postseason possibility primer to help you figure it out.

Three Facts for the Water Cooler
• The Braves set a major league record, winning for the 23rd straight time when Kris Medlen started a game. The streak actually began in 2010, and has been interrupted by a move to the bullpen and recovery from Tommy John elbow surgery. And a couple of winters.
• Two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum finished the regular season with a 5.18 ERA and 23 homers allowed, personal highs.
• The A's have 20 homers over their past nine games and 110 since the All-Star break, tops in the majors. Yoenis Cespedes went deep in Oakland's 5-2 victory against Seattle.
