Trevor Mbakwe avoids jail time, enabling him to continue his career at Minnesota

19 Oct
2012

Trevor Mbakwe's basketball future was on the line Friday in Florida when the Minnesota forward appeared before Judge Jose Fernandez due to a parole violation stemming from a July DUI in Minnesota.

Fernandez could have sentenced Mbakwe to up to 30 months in prison, effectively ending his college career at Minnesota and damaging his hopes of playing professionally one day. Instead he showed lenience by merely handing down an additional two years of probation and requiring Mbakwe to attend AA meetings and perform 20 hours of community service per month.

The result of the ruling appears to be that Mbakwe will be able to play right away for Minnesota this season, assuming his surgically repaired knee allows it. The Minnesota Star Tribune reported Mbakwe's status with the team was unlikely to change unless he was sentenced to jail time.

Mbakwe emerged from the courtroom Friday relieved that the judge ruled in his favor.

"I've been thinking about this since July 1," he told the Star-Tribune. "It's been stressing me and my family out and I'm glad it's over. ... I'm just going to stay on the right track now; no more slip-ups. The judge gave me another chance and I'm grateful for that. ... I'm just going to show everybody they were right in supporting me."

Mbakwe needs to live up to his "no more slip-ups" promise because frankly he's received more chances than most in his shoes would have gotten.

His legal issues started when he was charged with felony assault during junior college in Florida for allegedly punching a woman and breaking bones in her face. Later, he was arrested for harassment when he allegedly posted a Facebook message to a St. Paul woman's page in violation of a restraining order she previously obtained. Those previous issues landed him on probation, which he violated in July with his DUI.

Part of the reason Minnesota has been willing to look past his legal trouble is surely his impact on the court. The double-double threat averaged 14.0 points and 9.1 rebounds last season before going down with a season-ending knee injury.

In his comments to Mbakwe, Judge Fernandez offered this warning: "You're not a cat; you don't have nine lives."

Mbakwe should heed that warning. He is fortunate Minnesota is granting him another chance, but he has already damaged his reputation and one more "slip-up" could be his last.

Steelers rookie arrested on 15 counts of DUI, resisting-arrest charges after car chase, wreck

14 Oct
2012

Off weekends can be trouble in the NFL. Without a game to play on Sunday, the Steelers' Alameda Ta'amu, a rookie defensive lineman, got himself into a whole mess of trouble with Pittsburgh police early Sunday morning.

Ta'amu began the public-relations nightmare by driving a 2006 Lincoln Navigator the wrong way down a street on Pittsburgh's South Side at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. From there, it was a cascade of illegality:

• He was observed swerving into other lanes, passing multiple vehicles, running red lights and speeding in a pedestrian-heavy zone.

[Also: Redskins could be in big trouble for handling of RG3's concussion]

• He then refused several orders from police to stop the car and get out of the vehicle, apparently even driving his SUV straight at a couple of the officers and forcing them to dive out of the way. The officers drew their guns, but did not fire, according to the criminal complaint, "due to the large number of pedestrians and motorists on the sidewalks and roadway."

• He slammed into a parked vehicle, injuring the driver, who was still in the vehicle.

• He kept going, finally hitting several other cars so hard that he disabled his own SUV.

• He got out of the car, took off his shirt, and began to run from police.

• He was finally subdued in a parking lot -- at 6-foot-3, 348 pounds, he required multiple officers -- and handcuffed when he resisted arrest.

[Also: Is this the wildest touchdown in NFL history?]

• His blood-alcohol content was found to be .196 percent, more than twice Pennsylvania's legal limit of .08 percent.

Yeah, that ... that's not so good. Any one of those would be worthy of a harsh punishment from the league. Together? Put it this way: Ta'amu hasn't yet played this season, and that's not likely to change anytime soon. He was arrested on 15 counts and will face a preliminary hearing on Oct. 23.

''We are disappointed to hear about the situation regarding Alameda Ta'amu,'' Steelers GM Kevin Colbert said in a press release. ''We will gather more facts before providing any further comment.'' Seems a wise idea.

Atlanta's Monday night win over Denver featured another strong performance by Matt Ryan (219 pass, 2 TDs), a vintage line from Willis McGahee (113 rush, 2 TDs), several odd officiating moments, and a sloppy, scattershot effort by Peyton Manning, who tossed three first-quarter picks.

Falcons running back Michael Turner gained 42 yards — most of them ugly — on 17 carries, and he punched in an early one-yard score. Then, a few hours later, Turner apparently decided to celebrate his 10-point fantasy night. He was reportedly arrested early Tuesday morning, charged with speeding and DUI, and released around 7 am. So his season is not off to a great start.

(This is where I'm tempted to make a joke about Turner failing his field sobriety test because he can't walk more than two yards without falling. But maybe that's inappropriate, considering the seriousness of the charge. Thus, I'm gonna go with the parenthetical aside.)

There's no immediate suspension threat here, we believe, so the fantasy impact is minimal. The greater worry facing Turner owners is that Atlanta's ground game has been pathetic, and not just when the Burner has the ball in his hands. Jacquizz Rodgers has only gained 25 yards on 10 carries (2.5 YPC). Turner has 74 on 28 (2.6). For Jason Snelling, it's seven yards on three attempts (2.3). Not great.

And the Chargers are up next, a team that's allowed just 83 total rushing yards over two games.

Turner still owns the goal line role for the Falcons, the key to his ongoing fantasy relevance. He broke off a 15-yard clock-killing run on his final carry on Monday, making his final stats seem less terrible.

I'll remind you of Turner's advice to fantasy owners following his 32-yard performance in Atlanta's opener...

"Not after one game," Turner said when asked if fans should be concerned with his production. "If it's a couple weeks down the road and I'm still looking like that, then trade me off your fantasy team."

He's obviously not familiar with the sell-high concept.

Michael Turner popped for DUI after MNF win – Michael Turner | ATL

Michael Turner was charged with DUI and speeding early Tuesday morning.

Hours after rushing for 42 yards and a touchdown in the Atlanta Falcons' 27-21 win over the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football, Falcons running back Michael Turner was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in Gwinnett County, Ga., Mike Morris of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

According to the report, Turner was booked into Gwinnett County Jail shortly after 5 a.m. ET and was released a few hours later after posting $2,179 bond. Turner was also charged with speeding, but no other details of his arrest are known at this time.

"We're aware of the situation with Michael, but it's really not appropriate to comment on it," Falcons head coach Mike Smith told SIRIUS NFL Radio on Tuesday morning. "We'll keep the communication internal with myself and Michael, and we'll deal with it as it progresses."

Turner could face discipline from the league office for his DUI arrest, but NFL commissioner Roger Goodell usually does not take action until the legal process has run its course. As evidenced by Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch's DUI case, that may not happen until after the 2012 season. Barring any team discipline, Turner should remain available to the Falcons for the duration of the season.

Turner, 30, is earning $5 million in base salary in the fifth season of a six-year, $34 million contract he signed with the Falcons as a free agent in the 2008 offseason. Turner spent the first four seasons of his career with the San Diego Chargers, who had selected the running back in the fifth round of the 2004 NFL draft out of Northern Illinois.

In his first four-plus seasons in Atlanta, Turner has run for 5,355 yards and a franchise-record 51 rushing touchdowns, earning Pro Bowl honors following the 2008 and 2010 seasons. Turner led the NFL in rushing attempts in those Pro Bowl seasons, but as the Falcons have become more of a passing offense, Turner has had a reduced role in the offense. Through two games, Turner has just 28 rushing attempts for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Diamondbacks’ broadcaster Mark Grace takes leave of absence after DUI arrest

24 Aug
2012

An already chaotic year in the Arizona Diamondbacks television booth added another layer of turmoil on Friday as the team announced color commentator Mark Grace requested and was granted an "indefinite leave of absence to seek personal assistance" after being arrested on DUI charges Thursday night in Scottsdale, AZ.

Grace was arrested by a Scottsdale Police officer at approximately 9 p.m. Thursday night according to Sgt. Mark Clark.

Grace was pulled over near 7200 E. McCormick Parkway for having an expired registration plate displayed on his vehicle. After speaking to Grace and administering standard field-sobriety tests, the officer determined probable cause to arrest Grace for DUI.

He was arrested without incident.

Unfortunately, this is the second DUI arrest for the former Chicago Cubs and Diamondbacks first baseman in the past 15 months. The first occurred back on May 30, 2011, when Grace was pulled over by Scottsdale Police after making an improper right turn and determined to have a blood alcohol content over the state's .08% legal limit. That arrest resulted in the suspension of his license.

The fact that he arrived back in this regrettable position not long after makes it pretty clear there are personal issues and lapses in judgment that need to be addressed. To his credit and the Diamondbacks credit as well, it appears the first steps towards doing so will be traveled quickly, and we ultimately hope successfully.

With the leave announced and now in effect, Grace will join his long-time broadcast partner Darin Sutton on the sidelines for the foreseeable future. If you recall, Sutton was indefinitely suspended by the Diamondbacks in June for reasons that still aren't completely clear, though we know with some degree of certainly that his failed adherence to broadcast dress codes played a role in their decision.

Radio play-by-play man Greg Shulte will continue filling that role the television side in Sutton's absence. The team also announced on Friday that former All-Star Luis Gonzalez and baseball legend Joe Garagiola will handle the color duties.
