(Reuters) - British Open champion Ernie Els returns to CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, California, for this week's Frys.com Open energized by happy memories of his first appearance at the event 12 months ago. South African Els tied for fourth in last year's Frys.com Open, a performance that gave him hope of an upturn in his playing fortunes after a winless campaign on the 2011 PGA Tour characterized by erratic putting. ST ANDREWS, Scotland (Reuters) - Scotland's Paul Lawrie says he wants to play in the 2014 Ryder Cup and not captain Europe in the match against the United States in his home country at Gleneagles. The 1999 British Open champion, who helped set up Europe's extraordinary comeback victory at Medinah on Sunday with a 5&3 demolition of FedExCup champion Brandt Snedeker in the fifth singles match, will be 45 in two years time. Lawrie has won twice on the European Tour in 2012, however, helping secure a berth in the biennial matchplay event. ...

(Reuters) - Jiyai Shin broke the women's course record at Hoylake on Saturday, a blistering eight-under 64 pushing the South Korean five strokes clear of the field after the weather-delayed British Open second round. Compatriot Inbee Park (68) was in second place on four-under 140 at the final major championship of the year. Japan's Mika Miyazato (70) and seven-times major winner Karrie Webb of Australia (70) shared third spot on 141. Shin hit all 18 greens in regulation, never found a bunker and only missed one fairway as she fired six birdies and an eagle. ...
