Jim Nantz gets the winner wrong after Patriots beat the Jets

22 Oct
2012

After Stephen Gostkowski booted a 43-yard field goal with 11:02 left in overtime, and the New York Jets failed to respond on their subsequent drive, the New England Patriots appeared to have a hard-fought 29-26 victory in hand. At that point, both teams walked to the middle of the field to exchange the usual post-game congratulations and condolences.

In the booth, however, CBS analyst Jim Nantz didn't seem so sure. Nantz, who's generally one of the better announcers in any sport, seemed to have a particularly difficult time accepting the result.

As referee Jeff Triplette walked back to the field to confirm Mark Sanchez's fumble, Nantz said that the game "was going to be a stunner -- the biggest underdog of the day in the league."

Erm, what?

"And the New York Jets stand alone in first place now ... the New England Patriots, I should say," Nantz went on, eventually correcting himself. "At 4-3 -- what an amazing game here!"

So amazing that the result befuddled at least one expert.

As we said, we're just having a bit of fun at Nantz's expense -- we're aware of a few guys who can't always seem to remember where they are on gameday, and Nantz isn't one of them.

One point of interest, though -- on the Rob Ninkovich sack of Sanchez that caused the fumble and subsequent Pats recovery, it certainly looks as if Patriots linebacker Jermaine Cunningham went low on Sanchez, tackled him below the knees, and engaged long enough for an official familiar with that particular point of emphasis to throw a flag and extend the Jets' drive.

No matter. Perhaps Triplette was wondering how he'd get out of Foxboro alive if he'd made that call.

Diamondbacks add former manager Bob Brenly, ESPN’s Steve Berthiaume to broadcast team

19 Oct
2012

In recent months we've had a pretty close eye on the Arizona Diamondbacks television booth due to the unusual circumstances surrounding broadcasters Daron Sutton and Mark Grace.

To recap quickly, at different points during the 2012 season both men disappeared from FSN Arizona broadcasts to deal with personal and professional issues. Sutton's absence was more mysterious at first because the team was vague when discussing his "indefinite suspension," but we later learned there were philosophical differences with the organization that went beyond his personal matter. Grace's situation was more cut and dry as he took an extended leave of absence in August after his second DUI arrest in 15 months.

Ultimately, the differences with Sutton were deemed irreparable, and with Grace's contract also running out, the team decided to overhaul their booth completely on Oct. 4. That announcement came as a surprise to few. In fact, at the time of Grace and Sutton's dismissal speculation about who would replace the duo was already well underway.

It appears the Diamondbacks' search was, too, because the team has already announced their replacements. And it turns out they landed two pretty big names to fill the roles.

Former manager Bob Brenly — who led the Diamondbacks to a World Series championship in 2001 — will handle the color commentating duties after leaving the same position with the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. Of course, that's where Brenly formed a very entertaining and popular eight-year partnership with Len Kasper that many baseball fans are disappointed to see end. Brenly also spent three years in the booth with Arizona before going down to the dugout in 2001 and has called national broadcasts for Fox and TBS, so he's obviously polished and sound at his job.

His new play-by-play partner will be ESPN personality Steve Berthiaume, who hosted shows such as "Baseball Tonight" and also provided play-by-play during ESPN's extended College World Series coverage. Berthiaume's hiring had been rumored, but wasn't the near certainty that Brenly's was. It'll be interesting to see how he transitions from the studio to the full-time television voice in Arizona.

From MLB.com:

"We are ecstatic to be bringing in such a dynamic broadcast duo like Bob and Steve," team president and CEO Derrick Hall said. "Not only are we able to reach back to our roots with someone who has played such a significant role in our franchise's history, but we truly feel that Bob is the best analyst in the game today. With Steve, we believe that his ability to connect with our fans and his tremendous work on the national stage over the last several years makes him the perfect addition to the booth."

Difficult to argue with any of Derrick Hall's logic there. If Berthiaume's transition goes smoothly, Arizona should be set up with a good pairing for years to come.

While the new hires bring a tumultuous and at times bizarre situation in Arizona to a conclusion, they also leave openings at ESPN and in the Cubs broadcast booth. We've already heard names such current postgame analyst Todd Hollandsworth and MLB Network's Dan Plesac — who handled postgame duties with the Cubs in the past — linked to the latter job. It appears Mark Grace, who at one time would have been a logical candidate, will not be considered and recently retired Cub Kerry Wood is not interested.

Whoever the hire is will walk into a good situation with Len Kasper already comfortable and excelling in his role. But hopefully the selection can carry a tune a little bit, too, because whoever it is will definitely be asked to perform the seventh-inning stretch gimmick at Wrigley Field several times a year.

Bob Knight will call two Kentucky games next season? Get your popcorn ready!

15 Oct
2012

Thanks to a controversial decision by ESPN this week, two of the most mundane games on Kentucky's SEC schedule suddenly have far more anticipation.

ESPN removed legendary former Indiana coach Bob Knight from his role as analyst for Big 12 games on Big Monday, paired him with veteran play-by-play man Rece Davis and reassigned him to Thursday night SEC games, USA Today reported. That means for the first time, Knight will call a pair of Kentucky games, Jan. 10 at rebuilding Vanderbilt and March 7 at middling Georgia.

Both those otherwise innocuous games suddenly become must-see TV because of Knight's thinly veiled distaste for Kentucky coach John Calipari and his reliance on one-and-done prospects.

Knight famously refused to utter the word "Kentucky" on the air at ESPN last season, leaving the Wildcats off his list of the nation's elite teams. He also called one-and-dones "a disgrace" last spring and had to apologize for erroneously saying Kentucky's 2009-10 Elite Eight team "started five players in the NCAA tournament games that had not been to class that semester."

[Also: Hoosiers aim for first national basketball title since '87]

Of course, Calipari has done his part to fan the flames of the feud. He included a headline-grabbing jab at Knight in a press release announcing the Wildcats amassed a 3.12 team GPA last spring, noting "all this stuff bitter old men say that they don't go to class, it's not true."

An ESPN spokesman sent the following statement Tuesday afternoon in response to an email the previous day seeking an explanation for why the network would have Knight call SEC games.

"We had an opening to pair an analyst with Rece Davis on our Thursday night SEC package after Hubert Davis took a position with North Carolina," the statement read. "Rece and Bob have formed a good partnership after working together over the years on games and in the studio. We felt this would be a good opportunity to pair them together on a regular basis."

Whether or not the Kentucky controversy played any role in Knight's new position, it will probably be advantageous for ESPN.  At the very least, two routine games on the SEC schedule will draw more viewers than they otherwise would have.

You can argue the downside is that the spectacle of Knight calling a Kentucky game will overshadow anything that happens on the court. You can argue that it's an unnecessary distraction that will detract from the games themselves.

But to me, viewers will benefit. Nothing that happens on the floor those two nights will be anywhere near as entertaining to watch as Knight giving grudging respect to Calipari, finding new reasons to rip him or dancing around the controversy altogether.

Nightmare fuel: David Wells as Jayson Werth

11 Oct
2012

Hey East Coasters, want to ensure you don't fall asleep before Thursday night's great Game 5 between the Detroit Tigers and Oakland A's? Just put this picture of TBS analyst David Wells honoring Jayson "Walkoff" Werth on bookmark and click it whenever you're feeling drowsy.

Here's Wells explaining why he was donning the wig just minutes after Werth forced a NLDS Game 5  for the Washington Nationals on Friday by launching a ninth-inning home run off the St. Louis Cardinals for a 2-1 victory on Thursday night:

"In honor of my boy, Jayson. He just won the ball game for the Nats, man. So I gotta dress like him, I feel the mojo, I'm all excited now.

"Plus I'm tired of putting makeup on my (bald) noggin. Holy mackerel!"

Like the headline said, nightmare fuel. Now go make sure all your door and windows are locked. We've got a long night ahead of us.

Make sure all your bases are covered this postseason ...

Alex Ovechkin will play KHL hockey on ESPN2, with Barry Melrose on the mic

05 Oct
2012

ESPN2 is, in some ways, the channel that hockey built (OK, and Jim Rome). So there's a bit of nostalgia — and more than a little irony — in Friday's news that pro hockey is returning the Deuce for the first time in several years.

KHL hockey, to be exact.

The Kontinental Hockey League's deal with ESPN3 was formalized with an announcement today, with some unexpected news about a broadcast component:

ESPN today officially announced that it will deliver a minimum of seven games from 2012-13 season of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) exclusively on ESPN3 in the US and on ESPN UK.  Coverage begins Tuesday, October 9 at 1 p.m. ET with ESPN SportsCenter anchor Steve Levy and NHL studio analyst Barry Melrose calling the Lev vs. Dynamo Moscow game live on ESPN2 and ESPN3.  The game will re-air in primetime on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. ET and will air on delay on ESPN in the UK (Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. BST).

Confirmed games through the end of the month feature an all-star lineup of hockey players, including Alex Ovechkin (Dynamo Moscow), Ilya Kovalchuk (SKA), Evgeni Malkin and Sergei Gonchar (Metallurg Mg).

In addition to Levy and Melrose, commentary will be delivered in English language by play-by-play announcer Paul Romanuk and analyst Aaron Murphy.  Previously, ESPN3 in the US carried more than 50 games from the KHL live in Russian throughout the 2009-10 and 2010-11 regular seasons and playoffs.  In January 2010, ESPN3 distributed the KHL All-Star Game with Levy and Melrose commentating live from Bristol.

Steve and Barry, talkin' KHL hockey, pronouncing KHL names. Awesome.

At the moment, the Oct. 9 game between Lev vs. Dynamo Moscow and Alex Ovechkin is the only game scheduled for ESPN2. One wonders if this is a trial balloon for further simulating of KHL games if there's an audience for it — like getting your Evgeni Malkin fix on Oct. 22.

So if you want your fix of NHL stars, you better watch ESPN. And no, we never thought we'd ever type the previous sentence.

Diamondbacks dismiss broadcasters Daron Sutton and Mark Grace

04 Oct
2012

In news we could see coming for the past couple of months, the Arizona Diamondbacks officially relieved indefinitely suspended play-by-play man Daron Sutton and color analyst Mark Grace of their announcing duties on Thursday after both finished the 2012 season on the sidelines.

Though the announcement was expected by many, particularly in Sutton's case, there remained a lot of unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances of his suspension and overall status leading up to his dismissal today. When it was first announced on June 28, there was speculation ranging all the way from personal matters to philosophical differences to Sutton's choice of attire in the television booth. The team dismissed the dress code rumors pretty quickly, but it wasn't until CEO Derrick Hall's statements on Thursday morning that any definitive light was shed on the situation.

From the Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro:

Until Thursday, the team had been cryptic about its reasons for suspending Sutton. Hall said Sutton was not too negative on the air nor did he have any run-ins with the law.

"It's things that have happened over the years," Hall said, when asked to elaborate on what he meant by "philosophical differences."

"The collaboration here of our personnel, dealing with Daron and us trying to go in a direction that was different than he wanted to go as a broadcaster. It's no knock on him. It's style differences and differences of philosophies, as I mentioned. Daron's going to be a good broadcaster for years to come, I certainly hope."

Grace's situation was much less complicated to figure out. On August 23, he was arrested for his second DUI in just under 15 months, which led to an indefinite leave of absence to seek personal assistance for his demons and to deal with his pending legal issues. With of all those issues still unresolved, and Grace's contract coming to an end, Arizona made the call to move on.

There's already speculation that current White Sox analyst Steve Stone could be a candidate to fill Grace's role. Former Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly could also be in play because his announcing contract with the Chicago Cubs just ended. We should know which direction they're going pretty soon because Hall says they hope to have both vacancies filled in the next three weeks.

Indeed, life goes on in Arizona, but regardless of who takes over in their booth we certainly hope and wish for Daron Sutton and Mark Grace to overcome the challenges they're facing in their personal lives and eventually make triumphant returns to a broadcast booth somewhere in the near future.

Jon Gruden really, really, really, REALLY likes Texas

01 Oct
2012

In his capacity as ESPN's most "interesting" football analyst, former Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden loves him some hyperbole. From his endless litany of nicknames for players, to the occasional incomprehensible take when he gets too excited about the game to be understood, Gruden certainly brings a passion to the booth.

Never was this more evident than in the intro to ESPN's "Monday Night Football" telecast. Before the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys kicked off at Cowboys Stadium, Gruden went off in an impressive fashion, even for a network where VOLUME EQUALS ANALYSIS.

Play-by-play man Mike Tirico asked Gruden to compare Jay Cutler and Tony Romo, and then took a step back, because he knew what was coming.

"He's a modern-day John Wayne," Gruden said of Cutler. "Look at the tape -- he's a modern-day Josey Wales! He gets hit a lot! Hard! But he gets up, and he stays after ya. And I've seen ... this ... kid ... get ... mad. He doesn't just get mad, he gets PLUM-DOG MAD. Just like Josey Wales did. Ya got that, Tirico? When he starts feelin' it, this GUNSLINGER ends your night. He creates more plays for the Chicago Bears than Johnny Lujack did. Some of these throws take your breath away! And if Jay Cutler can make enough plays, the Chicago Bears can win tonight, and win any week.

"And Tony Romo ... I've seen him break his collarbone! I've seen him break a rib!  Puncture a lung! This is the TOUGHEST COWBOY THEY HAVE IN TEXAS!!! But at the end of the night, Tony Romo gets more done on his own than any quarterback in pro football. LOOK AT TONY ROMO CREATE PLAYS WITH HIS LEGS AND HIS ARM. He has no fear ... I love this song ["God Blessed Texas" by Little Texas] ... GOD BLESS TONY ROMO ... They need to change the words of this song. Because without Tony Romo, the Cowboys got no chance. But he is the most dazzling playmaking quarterback in football and I LovewatchinghimRomo.

"GOD BLESS TEXAS!!! Make my day, Tirico ... go ahead. Make my day!!!"

That was a different Eastwood character at the end there, but at that point, it was like John Blutarsky in "Animal House." When you're on a roll, you're on a roll.

We're glad that Red Bull is working out for you, coach. Now, on to the ... game?
