The Tigers might have Joel Zumaya's heat even in the Midwest chill. Detroit hopes the hard-throwing Zumaya will be ready for Game 3 of the ALCS despite a tender wrist. The rookie reliever injured his right wrist warming up before Wednesday's Game 2 in Oakland and underwent an MRI exam after the team arrived back in Detroit on Thursday, a day off for the teams heading into Friday's Game 3. The test revealed only inflammation. "I'm not sure he'll be ready to pitch (Friday), but we got a good report on him. We got the best news you could get," manager Jim Leyland said. "There's a little fluid there, but it appears to be pretty good, probably as well as we could expect."

Let bidding begin on Matsuzaka

Highly regarded pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka was given permission by the Seibu Lions on Tuesday to pursue a career in the major leagues. Matsuzaka, who has drawn interest from several major-league teams including the New York Yankees, finished the 2006 regular season with a career-high 17 wins against five losses. The 26-year-old right-hander posted a 2.13 earned run average and 200 strikeouts. Matsuzaka has long been considered one of the brightest prospects in Japanese professional baseball. Seibu is expected to use the posting system in which major league teams present bids for Japanese players and the highest bidder wins the negotiating rights. Ichiro Suzuki signed with the Seattle Mariners under the same system.

Williamson went 2-4 with a 5.72 ERA in 42 relief appearances for the Padres and the Chicago Cubs. He was acquired by the Padres on July 22 and pitched in 11 games for San Diego, going 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA.

The Padres requested waivers on 2B/SS Manny Alexander, 2B/3B Mark Bellhorn and RHP Scott Williamson for the purpose of giving them their unconditional release. Bellhorn, a member of Boston's championship team in 2004, didn't provide the Padres the pop they were seeking, batting .190 with eight home runs and 27 RBI in 115 games. Alexander split the 2006 season between Triple-A Portland and San Diego, batting .176 with four RBI in 22 games for the Padres. Williamson went 2-4 with a 5.72 ERA in 42 relief appearances for the Padres and the Chicago Cubs. He was acquired by the Padres on July 22 and pitched in 11 games for San Diego, going 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA.
