Pollack has neck surgery

Bengals linebacker David Pollack underwent surgery Wednesday in Cincinnati for a bone he cracked in his neck in a game nearly four months ago. There were no complications in the surgery performed by spine specialist Dr. Anthony Guanciale, and Pollack was resting comfortably, the Bengals said in a statement released Wednesday. Pollack was expected to remain in the hospital for a few days, the Bengals said. "No forecast of Pollack's eventual return to football will be made at this time," the Bengals said. Pollack cracked the bone while tackling Cleveland running back Reuben Droughns during the second game of the season on Sept. 17. He was placed in a halo brace that immobilized his neck.

Jan 03, 2007 02:56PM

Shockey's ankle feeling better

Jeremy Shockey's swollen left ankle has improved considerably and there is a good chance the Pro Bowl tight end will play for the Giants on Sunday in the NFC wild card game against the Eagles. Giants coach Tom Coughlin said that Shockey, who had a team-high 66 catches for 623 yards and seven touchdowns, would do some individual work Wednesday and possibly practice on Thursday. "This is definitely a game that's got some significance," Shockey said. "It's always a battle. These guys won the division this year. They are the champs of our division. We give them all the respect in the world. They've got great players. It's really not about them. It's about us. Us playing well together and giving ourselves a chance to win. That's what were going to do this week."

Steelers: Cowher could retire Monday

The News
Coach Bill Cowher is expected to retire from coaching the Steelers when he returns to Pittsburgh on Monday. ESPN's Len Pasquarelli reported on Thursday that there was a consensus within the Steelers front office that Cowher was ready to leave after 15 seasons.

Our View
It has appeared that Cowher will leave for the past couple weeks. Pasquarelli even reported that "it will be stunning if Cowher returns to the team to fulfill the final year of his current contract." Expect Ken Whisenhunt or Russ Grimm to be hired as his successor.

Jan 04, 2007 10:39AM

Seahawks: Jackson not likely to practice

The News
Seahawks wideout Darrell Jackson hasn't played in three games because of turf toe and isn't likely to practice this week, according to the team's website.

Our View
Jackson will be a game-time decision this weekend, so make sure you have another option ready.

Jan 04, 2007 09:26AM

Chargers: Tomlinson wins MVP

The News
Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson won The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player on Thursday. He earned 44 of the 50 first-place votes. "When you're MVP of the league, it's a great accomplishment," Tomlinson told the Associated Press. "I would feel so much better about winning if we win the Super Bowl. It would feel like it would be everything." Saints quarterback Drew Brees received four first-place votes, and Colts Peyton Manning received two. Tomlinson is the first Charger to win the award. He led the NFL in rushing yards (1,815) and set an NFL record with 31 touchdowns.

Our View
We imagine Tomlinson is much more proud of being the MVP of the fantasy football world, but this award is pretty nice too.

Jan 04, 2007 08:52AM

Chargers: Williams resting

The News
Chargers defensive tackle Jamal Williams will sit out practice all week to rest his sore knees, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. He is expected to practice next week.

Our View
It's a well-deserved rest for the Pro Bowl tackle. Williams is a dominant force in the middle of their 3-4 defense, and he'll need to continue his good work if the Chargers hope to win the AFC crown and advance to the Super Bowl.

Jan 04, 2007 08:48AM

Chiefs: Reports differ on Green

The News
Chiefs quarterback Trent Green has a sore ankle. That much is certain. The team's official web site reported that Green practiced on Wednesday, but the Kansas City Star said that head coach Herman Edwards rested his starting quarterback. "I'm not worried about it at this point. It's sore. I know that. We'll see tomorrow," Edwards told the team's official web site.

Our View
Glad to see everyone in Kansas City is paying attention. Either way, we expect Green to start against the Colts on Saturday. Edwards suggested that he'd be willing to switch to Damon Huard if Trent struggled, but Chiefs fans better hope that Green is sharp if they hope to win in Indianapolis.

Jan 04, 2007 08:47AM

Eagles: Feeley will be primary backup

The News
Eagles quarterback A.J. Feeley will be listed as the third quarterback for Sunday's playoff game against the Giants, but he is the first option to replace starter Jeff Garcia. "It's no big deal," Feeley told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "If anything would happen to Jeff, I know I'm going in. It's not about ego." Koy Detmer will be active and serve as the holder, but the Eagles don't plan on using him at quarterback.

Our View
The Eagles won't be using a traditional depth chart for the playoff game, but as Feeley says, it's not a big deal unless Garcia gets hurt.

Jan 04, 2007 08:45AM

Chargers: Castillo takes a break

The News
Chargers defensive end Luis Castillo will not practice this week in order to rest a sore ankle, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. He is expected to practice next week.

Our View
Castillo has been fighting this ankle injury since early November, and it's not surprising that he'll be resting this week. We fully expect him to play in the Divisional playoff game.

Jan 04, 2007 08:34AM

Chiefs: Allen headed to jail in February

The News
Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen has been ordered to serve 48 hours in jail beginning on February 16 at 6:00 p.m. The ruling stemmed from a DUI arrest last May. Allen will also be on probation for one year and fined $500, the Kansas City Star reported.

Our View
This sentence comes after both the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl, so there's no danger of Allen missing any important action this season. However, he is almost certainly now in phase one of the NFL's substance abuse program and could be subject to suspensions if he missteps in the future.

Jan 04, 2007 08:33AM

Bears: Hester still sidelined

The News
Bears kick return ace Devin Hester did not practice on Wednesday due to a right calf strain. However, head coach Lovie Smith told the Chicago Sun-Times that he believes Hester and all of his injured teammates to be at full strength when the Bears host a divisional playoff game next week.

Our View
The Bears can afford to take it easy on their injured players this week since they earned a first-round bye. It's encouraging to hear they should be at full strength next week. We'll let you know if anything changes between now and then.

Jan 04, 2007 08:28AM

Giants: Seubert practices

The News
Giants guard Rich Seubert practiced on Wednesday for the first time since injuring his shin against the Eagles on December 17, the Newark Star-Ledger reported. He is listed as questionable for Sunday's playoff game in Philadelphia.

Our View
Seubert would likely start at left guard if healthy, but even if he isn't quite ready for that role, the Giants would love to have him available. He's a versatile backup who can fill multiple spots, including tight end. Grey Ruegamer started at left guard in week 17, when Tiki Barber ran wild on the Redskins.

Jan 04, 2007 08:20AM

Saints: McKenzie slammed from behind

The News
Saints defensive back Mike McKenzie was involved in a four-car accident on Wednesday when he was hit from behind by another vehicle, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. He was not injured, nor were any of the other drivers.

Our View
Getting slammed from behind doesn't sound like fun, but it appears McKenzie won't miss any practice time despite being rear-ended.

Jan 04, 2007 08:15AM

Cowboys: Bledsoe undecided about retirement

The News
Cowboys quarterback Drew Bledsoe told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he's not sure if he will retire after this season.

Our View
Bledsoe turns 35 in February and was awful when he was the starter earlier this year. Still, we can imagine some team that has a young starter or uses a first-round pick next April on a quarterback would find him to be useful in 2007. His days as a useful fantasy player are likely over, though.

Jan 04, 2007 08:14AM

Saints: Horn scheduled to practice

The News
Saints wide receiver Joe Horn is slated to rejoin his teammates on the practice field on Friday for the first time in over a month. "I'm anxious to see how Joe Horn's doing," head coach Sean Payton told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "I have an idea how he's doing, but without seeing him on the field, it's tough to tell. We'll see him run tomorrow and practice Friday. Horn has not played since he aggravated a groin injury back in week 13.

Our View
Horn has said all along that he would be back for the playoffs. We should get a better idea as to whether that was wishful thinking or an accurate assessment when he practices on Friday. In the meantime, fantasy playoff owners shouldn't be too aggressive when drafting or bidding on Horn.

Jan 04, 2007 08:11AM

Falcons: Rivera a candidate

The News
The Falcons received permission from the Bears to interview defensive coordinator Ron Rivera for their vacant head coaching position, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The interview must take place before Sunday when the window closes on interviewing coaches on playoff teams that have first-round byes.

Our View
The Cardinals will also interview Rivera this week regarding their head coaching position. He also interviewed for coaching vacancies last year at this time.

Jan 04, 2007 08:08AM

Dolphins: Wish list developed

The News
The Dolphins have already come up with a list of coaching candidates to replace the departed Nick Saban. According to the Miami Herald, potential replacements include current Steelers coach Bill Cowher, USC coach Pete Carroll, Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, and Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera. Saban's defensive coordinator, Dom Capers, expressed interest in the job as well, and it was unclear if offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey would throw his hat in the ring or not. The Herald reports that the team has already received permission to talk to Cameron later this week.

Our View
Cowher is obviously the biggest name on this list, but a lot would have to happen for him to wind up in South Beach, including the Dolphins likely having to offer him around $7 million per season, not to mention giving the Steelers draft pick compensation in turn for Pittsburgh releasing him from his current contract. Carroll has balked at returning to the NFL in recent seasons, and Cameron seems to be at the top of the list for the Cardinals already. Capers and Mularkey would seem to be long shot candidates. Owner Wayne Huizenga has proven to be a good salesman with deep pockets in the past, so count on the Dolphins pursuing their desired target very aggressively.

Jan 04, 2007 08:06AM

Falcons: Tomlin likely to interview

The News
The Falcons might bring in Viking defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin to interview for their vacant head coaching position, according to Thursday's Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Other rumored candidates include Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, and 49ers assistant head coach Mike Sinlgetary.

Our View
Whisenhunt is considered the favorite due to his local connections as well as the fact that he is the only offensive-minded coach on the list of current candidates. Getting Michael Vick and the offense on track appears to be the team's first priority. However, general manager Rich McKay is very familiar with Tomlin dating back to their days with the Buccaneers.

Jan 03, 2007 07:53PM

Jaguars: Taylor wants more money

The News
Long unhappy with his contract, Fred Taylor is now asking the Jags to give him a significant raise. In fact, Taylor has confirmed that he has asked the Jags to double his salary, from $2.25 million to $5 million. Taylor rushed for 1,146 yards with a career-high per-carry average of 5.0 yards. "I wanted to have a strong season, and I think I had a pretty decent season, one that should entice them," Taylor told the Orlando-Sun Sentinel. "I've done my part. Now we'll see."

Our View
Jack Del Rio has spoke confidently about trying to retain Taylor, but we aren't sure this is quite what he had in mind. Fred did have a solid year, but so did Maurice Jones-Drew, who is much younger. Taylor is now 30 years old, and his skills are bound to begin diminishing soon. We will continue to monitor this situation, because if Taylor ends up playing for someone else in 2007, Jones-Drew will vault up our running back rankings

Jan 03, 2007 07:26PM

Cowboys: Parcells levels with Romo

The News
Bill Parcells had to visit with developing quarterback Tony Romo in an effort to curb some of the youngster's recent mistakes. Romo fumbled four times, lost two, and threw an interception in a season-ending loss to Detroit, which caused his coach much concern. "I don't want to discourage his ability to create," Parcells told the Associated Press. "But the judgment has to improve on some things or else you have what happened on Sunday." Parcells was asked if Romo's inexperience was a factor. "No," Parcells said. "Overconfidence."

Our View
Parcells knows that Romo can't turn the ball over this Saturday if his team truly hopes to advance. Romo has made some great plays at times this season, but has also had some poor performances in crucial moments. The Cowboys could have great success while facing a depleted Seattle secondary, so Romo could have nice numbers if he plays well.

Jan 03, 2007 07:17PM

Ravens: Everyone should be ready

The News
Brian Billick thinks that all of his players will be rested and ready to play when Baltimore resumes action next weekend. "I think we're relatively healthy," Billick told the Baltimore Sun. "We'll make the official declaration next week, but we should have everybody available to us, which is a good thing."

Our View
The Ravens are reaping the benefits of a great regular season. They earned a bye this weekend, and are hoping that will aid them in a deep playoff run. At this time it appears that they are coming into the playoffs as a very dangerous team.

Jan 03, 2007 07:08PM

Jets: Pennington ready

The News
Chad Pennington will be ready to play this weekend despite being listed on the Jets injury report. Pennington has been suffering from a calf injury for a majority of the season, and is listed as probable yet again.

Our View
Chad has been surprisingly durable this year, as he's started every game for the Jets. He will need to play at a very high level this weekend if New York hopes to win, but shouldn't be hampered by this minor injury.
