Cubs release RHP Gaudin (AP)

The Cubs have released right-hander Chad Gaudin The reliever was acquired from Oakland in the trade that brought Rich Harden to Chicago in July. The Cubs also optioned right-hander Jeff Samardzija to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday. Gaudin went 9-5 with a 4.40 ERA in 50 outings with the Athletics and Cubs. He was 4-2 with a 6.26 ERA in 24 relief appearances for Chicago.
BoSox's Buchholz struggles in last start (AP)

Clay Buchholz's final Grapefruit League start fell apart in the fourth inning. Buchholz allowed six runs and nine hits over 5 1-3 innings but the Boston Red Sox rallied for an 8-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. His spring ERA jumped from 0.46 to 2.52. Matt Joyce and Gabe Gross each hit a two-run homer off Buchholz in the fourth.
Novak hits two threes vs. Rockets

Clippers SF Steve Novak came off the bench for 18 minutes on Saturday at Houston and scored 10 points. Novak was 4-of-7 from the field and hit two threes.
Smoltz visits Braves, golfs with Tiger (AP)

John Smoltz was back in the Atlanta Braves' clubhouse Monday, visiting his old team before heading off for a round of golf with Tiger Woods. Smoltz signed with the Boston Red Sox in January, ending his 20-year tenure with the Braves. The right-hander is targeting a June return to the mound after shoulder surgery.
Gregg bests Marmol for Cubs' closer role (AP)

Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella picked Kevin Gregg to be the team's closer heading into the season. Gregg beat out Carlos Marmol, the Cubs' top setup man last year. They both spent spring training vying to replace All-Star closer Kerry Wood, who signed with Cleveland during the offseason. "Gregg came in here and hasn't given up a run all spring," Piniella said Sunday.

Lakers G Kobe Bryant had just 17 points on 7-for-19 shooting in Sunday's game against Atlanta. He missed the morning meal and film session because of an upset stomach, then had his second straight subpar game. "My stomach's OK now," said Bryant, coming off a 14-point performance at New Jersey. "When my medicine wears off, it's going to be interesting."

Cubs demote seven from spring camp

The Chicago Tribune reported Sunday that the Cubs have trimmed their roster down to 30 players after optioning pitchers Kevin Hart and Randy Wells to Triple-A Iowa and assigning catcher Mark Johnson, infielders Esteban German and Andres Blanco, and outfielders So Taguchi and Brad Snyder to minor league camp.
