Despite never having to buy a ticket, not staying up late enough to watch games and easily replacing hockey with staring at their own boogers for amusement, it's the children that are most affected by the 2012 NHL Lockout, don't you know?

Witness the 3-year-old son of Tyson Theriault, who apparently isn't concerned with child protective services visiting him for making his boy a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. According to the YouTube description, this tyke was asking if there was going to be hockey this year; so they decided to put the query to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman himself via the Internet:

According to Tyson, the "you're a bad man" part was his son's ad-lib. Clearly, he reads Canadian sports pages to him before bed …

Another voice added to the lockout debate. If Donald Fehr doesn't add that Super Frowny Face at the end to the NHLPA's logo, he's not doing his job.

Now, if we could only get this kid, the Herb Brooks kid and Joey Junior Blackhawks Reporter in the same room, we could end the work stoppage tomorrow.

‘The Lockout Song’ is our favorite cynical NHL fan anthem of 2012 (VIDEO)

13 Sep
2012

More and more NHL fans are asking, "What can I do to show these greedy jerks how cheesed off I am about the lockout?" We all know arena boycotts don't work because, well, we all love hockey too much. But what about something we can live without — like, for example, official merchandise?

That's the rallying cry of "The Lockout Song," the latest unofficial fan anthem of the 2012 NHL work stoppage. Arun (aka "exanimeau" on YouTube) previously graced the world with "Hey There Iginla"; now he's transformed Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" into an anti-lockout screed. Watch, laugh, enjoy and tell a friend:

No mini-Zambonis or bellybutton rings? Labor war is indeed hell.

Watching this charming music video, we're suddenly reminded of something that, at times, gets lost when a bunch of adults are squabbling over millions of dollars: They're about to alienate millions of kids that love, or have grown to love, this league.

That alone might make you want to hold off on buying that officially licensed lamp for a while …

Watch Luc Robitaille share stories with Jeremy Roenick, Pavol Demitra before final NHL game (VIDEO)

07 Sep
2012

During the 2005-06 NHL season, FSN West spent time filming behind-the-scenes of the Los Angeles Kings' season. The team would finish 10th in the Western Conference and the biggest news of the season was the ending of Luc Robitaille's career. Earlier in the year, Robitaille had become the franchise's all-time leading goal scorer.

According to YouTube user "45KingsFan", he was part of the filming crew, with footage used on FSN throughout the season. After the Lokomotiv tragedy, he compiled footage that was cut featuring Pavol Demitra, who died in the crash one year ago today.

During the 12-minute video, there's plenty of fun stuff, but starting at the 4:37 mark, the crew films behind-the-scenes before Robitaille's final NHL game on April 17, 2006, a 4-0 win over the San Jose Sharks. In the trainer's room, Robitaille, Demitra and Jeremy Roenick share stories about the 1991 All-Star Skills Competition where Mark Messier cheats during the accuracy shootout, Demitra coming up through Ottawa's system and "that kid" Danny Briere:

The entire video is worth the watch. Ever wanted to hear Jeremy Roenick sing Craig David's "Rendezvous"? What about cameos from young Sean Avery and Dustin Brown? And we truly hope that somebody got that whole tub filled up with ice for Craig Conroy.

YouTube user "booedofftheice" has videos of the actual footage used on FSN not just from before Robitaille's final game, but during that Kings season.

Fab Melo breaks a folding chair, wins $10,000 grand prize (VIDEO)

24 Aug
2012

Many moons ago, when YouTube was but a gleam in the eye of various software engineers and businessmen, ABC aired a show called "America's Funniest Home Videos." In retrospect, it was essentially a forerunner of Internet viral videos. Families and individuals would bring in tape of animals doing weird things, babies acting like adults, and grown men getting hit in the crotch with various objects. Then the studio audience would vote on their favorite video, and the winner would get $10,000, which in 2012 U.S. currency roughly translates to 10 million views on YouTube.

Now what does any of this have to do with the NBA? This week, various NBA rookies convened in New York for the annual rookie photoshoot. At one point, Boston Celtics first-round pick Fab Melo and a few of his rookie colleagues sat in rickety folding chairs. Melo's broke, and he fell, and everyone laughed. Because it is pretty funny.

Twenty years ago, the NBA would have submitted this clip to AFHV, and David Stern and Adam Silver would have won the $10,000 grand prize. Then Bob Saget would have interviewed them, and we would still be watching that moment today on YouTube. And so it all comes full circle.

Jeremy Lin has a video chat with distraught 5-year-old Knicks fan (VIDEO)

07 Aug
2012

When Jeremy Lin left the New York Knicks for the Houston Rockets a few weeks ago, the team's fans got very upset. Some even went so far as to reconsider their allegiances, ending decades of fandom over an especially awful decade. Somehow, the Knicks experience has been embarrassing enough lately that such a decision didn't seem quite so ridiculous.

However, one of the most notable upset Knicks fans can't claim a decade of rooting on the team. Around the time Lin switched teams, the YouTube user "hmpeopleinmyhead" posted a clip of his five-year-old son Naim crying and wondering how the Knicks possibly could have let his favorite player leave. The video has been viewed more than 30,000 times and became something of a viral sensation.

When Lin heard about the video, he took action and scheduled a video conversation on Mac's FaceTime application with Naim. You can watch nine minutes of the session at the top of this post (via IamaGM.com). The first question is about spending time with Toney Douglas and Josh Harrelson in Houston, which seems like one of the most random NBA hangout trios possible.

This is a pretty cool gesture by Lin, and the sort of thing that makes the Knicks look even worse to the general public for letting him walk in restricted free agency. He's popular, approachable, and understands how to handle himself in public. While there are still acceptable basketball reasons for wondering if Lin can play up to his initial "Linsanity" level, there are also indications that he can. For a franchise with an increasingly poor reputation in the press, the Knicks lost a lot when they cut ties with Lin.

That's not to say that Lin only spent time talking to Naim and his father out of the kindness of his heart. Lin knows that this move was good PR, the sort of outreach that creates new fans in addition to making two fans for life. The fact that it came from a good place doesn't change that it's also a business decision. That's fine, of course — it's just some additional context for this conversation. My guess is that Lin will not make a habit of this, because a single conversation does all the PR work he needs.

Now we must wonder if other players will follow suit. For the record, Monta Ellis never contacted me when I cried after his trade to Milwaukee.

Trevor Bauer doesn’t care if you like his rap career or not — nor should he

27 Jul
2012

It's really easy to be immediately dismissive toward the effort and interests of others in this day and age. Indeed, it's not hard to say "this sucks" or "don't quit your job" when someone like young Trevor Bauer of the Arizona Diamondbacks puts one of his rap songs on YouTube or makes his entire five-song catalog available on SoundCloud.

Here's the thing, though: Whatever time and work Bauer put into lying those rhymes — regardless of their quality and appeal — was a lot more time and work you put into your "stick to pitching" tweet. It's a big reason why the long-tossing Bauer earned a few more fan points with me after putting things in perspective with a well-balanced response to a Twitter critic:

Am I saying that Bauer, who is currently on the mend in Triple-A, should pack up his glove and try to become the next Eminem? Do I think he's deluded into thinking he can turn this into a second sort of revenue? No and no.

But it does sound like Bauer is having fun and not taking himself too seriously when he picks up a microphone, no matter what the result. Good on him.
