On July 30, 2006, Vince Young, the No. 3 overall pick of the 2006 NFL draft, signed a six-year contract with the Tennessee Titans that was worth just over $48 million, had a maximum value of $57.79 million, and contained $25.74 million in guaranteed money.

Just over six years later, Young is not on the NFL radar screen and has run out of money, the Associated Press reports.

Young earned over $30 million of his rookie contract and banked another $4 million last season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Young signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Buffalo Bills in May, but that deal included just $350,000 in guaranteed money and the former University of Texas standout was released in favor of Tyler Thigpen and Tarvaris Jackson in August.

[More NFL: Tim Tebow may eventually consider a career in politics]

Young's financial mess has been well-documented. In June, Young filed a lawsuit against his former agent, Major Adams II, and financial adviser, Ronnie T. Peoples of Peoples Financial Service. In the suit, Young claims that at least $5.5 million of his money was misappropriated by Peoples Financial Service. The suit came on the heels of Young defaulting on a $1.9 million loan obtained in Young's name with Pro Player Funding LLC, which has received a $1.69 million judgment against the former Heisman Trophy finalist.

According to Trey Dolezal, Young's attorney, the loan with Pro Player Funding was obtained by Adams and Peoples, who Young has accused of falsifying documents, forging his signature and impersonating him for their own financial gain.

"They conspired to take Vince's money," Dolezal told the Associated Press. "It's that simple."

What's not so simple is Young's path back to the NFL. His opportunity with the Bills may have been his last shot for a steady NFL paycheck. Bills head coach Chan Gailey is a creative offensive mind who could have used a player with Young's mobility, but a 48.1 percent completion percentage and a pair of interceptions in the preseason helped seal his fate with the club. Another factor was Thigpen's willingness to take a $1 million pay cut to remain with the team, a move that Young, who was due $1.25 million in salary, a $300,000 roster bonus in the opening week of the season and $6,250 for each game he was active ($100,000 total), couldn't make.

[Outside the Game: Lamarr Woodley gives back to his hometown]

Dolezal believes that Young's financial situation may have been a factor in the Bills' decision to release the quarterback.

"I wasn't in the room when they (the Bills) made a decision, but what would you think? It certainly wouldn't help me if I'm the owner or the head coach knowing all this is going on with Vince and then he goes out and plays poorly," Dolezal said.

A possibility for Young could be the CFL. After his release from Buffalo, Young was added to the Montreal Alouette's "negotiation list," which would give them exclusive negotiating rights. The Als currently have the ageless Anthony Calvillo, Adrian McPherson and Josh Neiswander on their quarterback depth chart. Another possibility is the United Football League, which is attempting to restart in a few weeks and has a contract with the CBS Sports Network.

Charges brought against former airline executive in Lokomotiv crash

06 Sep
2012

Friday will mark the one-year anniversary of the tragic Russian plane crash that killed 44 people, including the entire Lokomotiv hockey team. On Thursday came news that Vadim Timofeev, the former vice president of Yak Service Airlines, the airline that supplied the downed plane, was charged in connection with the crash. Timofeev is charged with allowing the crew to operate the Yak-42 illegally.

From Russia Today:

According to the investigators, the official was in charge of flight operations at Yak Service, with control of the pilots' qualification being his direct responsibility.

"By putting the crew in the air Timofeev broke the rules of air transport operations. At the moment of the disaster, that crew wasn't entitled to fly," [Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir] Markin stressed. "Timofeev had allowed the captain to fly based on falsified documents, and the co-pilot hadn't finished his training on the Yak-42 plane and had no right to be in air."

From Sov Sport:

Investigators are certain that the catastrophe could have been avoided if it wasn't for a number of violations committed by Timofeev, who was responsible for company's flight organization work.  According to an Markin [Prosecutor's Office representative], on the day of the crash the flight crew was supposed to attend re-education sessions for the permit to fly Yak-42 [aircraft], and not to fly.

The official report on the crash deemed it was a result of "pilot error," stating that the plane's break was applied during takeoff and also a banned medication was found in the blood of one of the pilots. Yak Service went out of business soon after the crash after the company had its license revoked.

On Thursday, the re-built team was back on the ice for its opener in the 2012-13 KHL season, defeating Sibir 5-2.

Joe DiMaggio’s stamp creates confusion, does it show him batting left-handed?

13 Aug
2012

You're not alone if you did a double take upon seeing the new Joe DiMaggio stamp that was released by the United States Postal Service last month.

So many people have looked at the Yankee Clipper's likeness on the "Forever" stamp and came away thinking he had been mistakenly portrayed as a left-handed batter that the system's official blog felt compelled to pen a clarification on Monday.

From the USPS:

The Yankee Clipper was a right-handed batter, and he is indeed following through on his right-handed swing. However, due to the size of the stamp, you can't see that his lower torso and legs are twisted as they would be on his follow-through. The stamp artist, Kadir Nelson, also had to slightly change the position of the bat in order to show all of it. If this had been a photograph, you would've been able to see that when DiMaggio followed through, his bat was extended fully away from his body and nearly parallel to the ground.

Any initial confusion is understandable. Nelson's depiction of DiMaggio's 90-degree follow-through makes it look like he's either batting left-handed or admiring at a pretty approach shot on the golf course. It definitely doesn't look like the Joltin' Joe backswing (below) that DiMaggio made famous during his 56-game streak and Hall of Fame career.

But all it really takes to clear things up is a glance at the placement of DiMaggio's hands. They're exactly where they're supposed to be for a right-handed batter so it's not hard to imagine he's being portrayed as following through, albeit very awkwardly.

It would've been nice for Nelson and the USPS to go for a more accurate DiMaggio design, especially considering this is the late legend's first appearance on a stamp. It hasn't hurt sales, though, as the issue honoring DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Willie Stargell and Larry Doby set presale records before their release on July 20.

Post Office releases much-anticipated set of stamps featuring four baseball legends

20 Jul
2012

Summer trips to the mailbox and post office just got a bit more exciting. Starting Friday, the United States Postal Service is selling stamps bearing the likeness of four late Hall of Famers — Ted Williams, Larry Doby, Joe DiMaggio and Willie Stargell.

We've known about this for awhile now — we even speculated about which players would be honored when Joe DiMaggio was announced as the first stamp in the issue — and it would appear the public is pretty jazzed about the arrival. The USPS set a record by receiving over 2 million preorders for the stamps.

You can get your own by visiting your local post office or by putting in an order at www.usps.com/play-ball.

The release of the stamps was marked with not only a ceremony in Cooperstown on Friday but also at post offices in Boston, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and the Bronx. While I'm far from a philatelist, there's an excellent chance I'll be putting these beauties in a frame.
