Sing along with ‘When The Leafs Were Good’, an 82-year-old’s cynical ode to Toronto hockey (VIDEO)

19 Sep
2012

Previously on Puck Daddy, we featured a 3-year-old Toronto Maple Leafs fan lamenting the NHL lockout. Now, please join us at the other end of the temporal spectrum, as 82-year-old Hugh Oliver sings a jaunty little ditty about the Leafs through the years … with, as expected, a healthy dose of cynicism.

Unless, of course, the Leafs' most recent success did in fact come "when the Earth was cooling."

Sorry, did he just suggest Leafs fans should have tossed Harold Ballard's salad?

Overall, Hugh seems like a rather optimistic fellow, so the Leafs haven't necessarily lost the octogenarian busker demo. But let's state the obvious here: Time is obviously running short for him.

Brian Burke, we mean.

Puck Daddy’s Unofficial 2012-13 NHL Lockout Drinking Game!

18 Sep
2012

The clock struck midnight on Saturday, and the 2012 NHL Lockout began.

We're all hockey fans; sadly, we're used to this sort of thing by now. Fortunately, there are tons of other levels of hockey to support around your community and the world. While men in suits argue about money, we're left to wait and wonder when we'll see our favorite NHL team play again.

In the meantime, your friends at Puck Daddy want to help make the time go by quicker and make your hockey-less days much more enjoyable. This is why we've devised the 2012 NHL Lockout Drinking Game. While we're attending out our local minor hockey team or finding a pirated feed online to watch a big Elitserien game, we'll also be feverishly checking in for any updates in the labor talks, if there even are any in the coming days and weeks.

Coming up, what you should look for as this CBA process drags on to help increase your beverage-to-hand ratio.

ONE DRINK

• For each NHL player signing a lockout contract in Europe. (CHUG: That player is Sidney Crosby.)

• Each time an NHL player Tweets out the hashtag #theplayers.

• Every time quotes from the NHL and the NHLPA conflict with one another. (Ex: Both sides accuse the other side of not wanting to meet.)

• Every time you hear the phrase "hockey related revenue"/"HRR"

• Every time agent Allan Walsh complains about the owners being muzzled.

• Whenever an NHL player speaks ill of Commissioner Gary Bettman instead of the guy cutting him a check.

• Every time you have to explain to your non-hockey friends just what the hell the NHL is doing. (SECOND DRINK: That friend thinks the players went on strike.)

NHL 13 roster updates turn your team into a glorified ECHL squad, while the European teams become stacked.

TWO DRINKS

• If an NHL player speaks out of turn about sympathizing with the owners and wanting the lockout to end. (SECOND DRINK: That player isn't from Canada.)

• If an NHL owner speaks out of turn about sympathizing with the players and wanting the lockout to end.

• When either side purposely leaks financial documents to MSM to curry favor.

• Any time Donald Fehr vaguely threatens to go after the salary cap.

• Whenever an NHL player laments a 24-percent salary rollback that's no longer part of either proposal in the negotiation.

• Any time Donald Fehr or Gary Bettman use the word "gulf" when describing how apart the two sides are.

• If Dustin Byfuglien, Dustin Penner or Martin Brodeur are photographed eating.

THREE DRINKS

• Two under-contract NHL players have a fight in a non-NHL league.

• For every time a set of regular season games are canceled. (CHUG: The Winter Classic is one of those games.)

• The NHL lockout is mentioned in the first 25 minutes of ESPN SportsCenter.

• The NHL lockout isn't mentioned in the first 5 minutes of TSN SportsCentre.

• If #OccupyNHLStore becomes a reality.

• Each time Florida Panthers COO Michael Yormark updates his Twitter followers on a snack he's enjoying during the lockout.

• Any time an anonymous hockey "insider" declares a new CBA agreed upon by both sides. (CHUG: Any time a member of the MSM picks up on said false report.)

• Paul Bissonnette tweets of photo of himself and two blondes with the caption "puttin' it in escrow."

CHUG

• The NHLPA fires Donald Fehr and hires Ted Saskin.

• An NHL franchise is relocated during the lock out.

• A beer league sues for control of the Stanley Cup.

• Your team's AHL squad wins the Calder Cup thanks to a loaded roster.

• Whenever it's official that we'll have hockey again.

• ...or if 2004-05 will repeat itself all over.

(Ed. Note: Puck Daddy, of course, in no way endorses abuse of alcohol, consumption of alcohol by anyone under the legal drinking age in their region and, without a doubt, the operation of an automobile or any machine while under the influence of alcohol. These games are listed for entertainment purposes and we don't take responsibility for any result of their application. To sum it up, don't be a knucklehead and have fun!)

NHL Lockout Soundtrack: Taylor Swift vs. Bettman and Fehr; ‘The Hockey Song’ protests

17 Sep
2012

The 2012 NHL Lockout has forced hockey fans to vent their frustrations in a variety of ways — some more creative than others. The NHL Lockout Soundtrack is an occasional feature on Puck Daddy that collects the songs of our despair.

One of the first musical reactions to the NHL work stoppage was the Jason Mraz-inspired "The Lockout Song," and its whimsical video and cynical anti-merchandise stance turned it into a viral hit.

[Related: NHL, NHLPA release touching statements as duel for fan empathy intensifies]

But isn't Jason Mraz a little too upbeat and quixotic for the soul-crushing experience that is the NHL Lockout? Don't we need musical inspiration that's more relevant to the situation, such as something derived from the bitter shattered heart of gullible love?

In other words: Don't we need a Taylor Swift song parody for this breakup, ya'll?

Whether you think we do or not … here it is, via QX 104 in Winnipeg and singer Vicki Shae:

This is based on Miss Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," aka Rick Nash's ring-back tone for Scott Howson during the summer.

Coming up, fun with Stompin' Tom Connors, an extraterrestrial effort from a Philadelphia Flyers fan and the "Punch Out" inspired song we hope you've already heard (but if not, stay tuned).

Meanwhile, in LMFAO land ...

That's The Royal Half and Indiana Matt doing it again. Girl, look at those profits!

While it's not exactly sexy and probably knows it, "The Hockey Song" by Stompin' Tom Connors is the puck anthem heard in barns around North America (along with being the single-most hated tune in musical history for our podcasting partner Jeff Marek).

Naturally, fans were going to find a way to turn the "it's hockey night tonight!" standard into a lockout protest song, beginning with YouHaveTwoWeeks.com supporter C. Edward Brunanski.

Now here's Puck Daddy reader Sean Hallaren with his lockout-centric take on "The Hockey Song":

The lyrics:

Hello out there, we're off the air, no hockey night tonight
Tension grows, there's labor woes, eight years we've seen this twice
The league it sucks, and the players suck, and the fans all go insane
Someone roars "quick, before we lose a whole season again!"

Oh, the good old hockey game locked the players out again
And the fans they live in pain with no good old hockey game

The players fight and Bettman might remake 2005
If they can't agree I must decree I don't think I will survive
Revenue and dollars and quite frankly I don't care
Someone drop the puck before I pull out all my hair

Oh, the good old hockey game locked the players out again
And the fans they live in pain with no good old hockey game

Oh take me to the box office where I'll return my seats
I'm tired of all the fighting between the rich and the elites
Can't we all just get along, can someone please give up?
I don't think I can go a year without seeing the Stanley Cup

Oh, the good old hockey game locked the players out again
And the fans they live in pain with no good old hockey game

Our next entry is ... uh ... pretty unique. Unless you consider music videos about hockey-obsessed aliens invading a suburban house and lamenting the potential loss of the Flyers' season to be commonplace.

Forsberg shirsy sighting!

The song is "This Will Be Our Year" by the Zombies. It's the same old story: Greedy billionaires fighting greedy millionaires, and it's always the Greys who end up losing.

Finally …

We hope you caught our boys Bloge Salming and Down Goes Brown with their latest effort for The Score, but just in case you missed it: "Mike Tyson's Punch Out," LL Cool J and Gary Bettman. It's got chuckles.

If you have a lockout song, or know of one we should check out, hit us as .

Sunday Comics: The lockout could have been avoided edition

16 Sep
2012

The Sunday Comics are the best part of the newspaper, even if you're one of those losers that follows the adventures of Mark Trail. They arrive here on Puck Daddy on occasional Sunday mornings to make you spit coffee.

The work of Dave Delisle has made its way onto Puck Daddy multiple times. A diehard hockey fan, his website, Dave's Geeky Hockey, is full of cool stuff for puckheads. Like most hockey fans, Dave finds the lockout distressing. "My biggest frustration with the impending NHL lockout," he says, "is that both parties were really slow in getting to the bargaining table. I mean, they only had 7 years to avert this, but for whatever reason didn't start CBA talks until 3 months before today's (Sept 15) deadline."

Dave has expressed his frustration through comic and was kind enough to share it with us. Enjoy.

If you have anything you'd like to contribute to Sunday Comics, send'em over to no later than Saturday night.

The Essentials: Phoenix Coyotes Edition

11 Aug
2012

(This month, Puck Daddy asked bloggers for every NHL team to tell us The Essentials for their franchises — everything from the defining player and trade, to the indispensable fan traditions. Here's Travis Hair from Five For Howling, giving us The Essentials for the Phoenix Coyotes.)

By Travis Hair

Player: Shane Doan

Offseason drama this year notwithstanding, he's been the face of the franchise and it's most outspoken supporter. It's rare to have a player with the same franchise for so long, especially in a market like Phoenix and the fans and other players love him for it.

Season: 2011-2012

Apparently the previous seasons didn't mean much to the analysts early as they once again said the Coyotes couldn't even make the playoffs at the beginning of the year. Winning the Pacific Division and making it to the Western Conference Finals doesn't seem too shabby.

Game: Game 6, Round 1, 2012 Playoffs against Chicago

The Coyotes finally break through the first round as a franchise. Pretty much the biggest game the team had played to that point.

Goal: Krys Kolanos, March 30, 2002

His penalty shot against Patrick Roy. There may have been more important game winning goals, but Roy absolutely losing it to the point of getting ejected after getting scored on makes this goal priceless.

Trade: To Buffalo - Daniel Briere, 2004 3rd round pick (#71-Andrej Sekera), To Phoenix - Chris Gratton, 2004 4th round pick (#112-Liam Reddox)

What an awful trade regardless of what Briere's upcoming salary demands would have been.

Unsung Hero: Sean Burke

Was solid during his playing days, but his goaltending coaching is a huge part of what's turned the Coyotes into winners. Taking a waiver wire pickup in Bryzgalov and a goalie everyone had given up on in Mike Smith and turning them into above average if not Vezina candidate goalies.

Franchise Villain: The Goldwater Institute

Bunch of waste of space gas bags.

Fight: Craig Weller vs. Rick Nash, Dan Fritsche and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen

It may not have been the flashiest, but Weller checks Nash, dump Fritsche and then one punches Tollefson. Awesome moment.

Coach: Dave Tippett

The Coyotes have had some runs of good coaching, but no one has taken them further and been more consistent than Tippett. He's been right up there for the Jack Adams every season he's been here. You have to think that once ownership is taken care of he's on toward the top of the list to re-up.

Broadcaster: Curt Keilback

Was the voice of the franchise for the longest time right up until just before the ownership saga. He's still got the ability and Dave Strader was great, but he'll always be the voice we associate with the game.

Arena Behavior/Tradition/Trend: The Whiteout

Taken from Winnipeg or no, the Whiteout has been the tradition for the Coyotes Playoff runs. Sure there were a lot of first round exits associated with it until this year, but it's also a pretty amazing experience in person.

Arena Food: Macho Nachos family style

They come in a big pizza box and have beef brisket on them. These are not your typical stadium nachos.

Swag (jersey, hat, shirt, gear, etc.)

Pretty much anything associated with the Whiteout. We had guys in wedding dresses, spacesuits, white tuxes, if it's in white someone was wearing it at those games. A close second are any of the old style Kachina jerseys. Those things were awesome.

Logan Couture’s Twitter feed dabbles in porn (UPDATE)

26 Jul
2012

Hey, NHL players are just like us … provided "us" includes those who accidentally tweet out links to pornographic websites on occasion.

That's San Jose Sharks star Logan Couture's feed from Wednesday night, which spewed forth a link to YouJizz.com, a pornographic video site. This link in particular transported followers to the videos with the most views. His 110,000 followers. Whoops.

The tweet was deleted about 20 minutes after it appeared, but not before it was screen-capped and summarily ridiculed. And by that we mean: If you're thinking about the best Alexander Semin joke to make right now, slow your roll because someone's already made it.

And now, Puck Daddy presents the Top 5 Logan Couture "Why I tweeted a porn link" excuses ... (UPDATE: And his actual excuse as well.)

5. "I was hacked. And since Tim Peel was officiating, no one saw it."

4. "I searched for 'filthy awesome porn' and just assumed it would lead me to Pavel Datsyuk shootout highlights."

3. "You try having your name mentioned in a potential Rick Nash trade to Columbus for five months, and then tell me how much stress relief you require."

2. "This was a calculated move to ensure I never have to win the Lady Byng."

And finally …

1. "Hey, when you've got great hands, you've got great hands."

Party on Logan Couture. And for future reference, never hit the little blue box with the Twitter bird in it instead of the "Watch it in HD" button. We've all been there. OK, some of us have been there. OK, a few of our writers have been there ...

Stick-tap ... er, credit to Joe Yerdon.

UPDATE: Couture responded to the sudden surge in interest about his Twitter feed.

And there he goes, besmirching the good name of freaks ...
