NHL cancels remaining preseason games as lockout continues

27 Sep
2012

The NHL preseason was supposed to start on Sunday night with Ottawa and Montreal. That game and every other one through Sept. 30 were canceled last week by the NHL as a new collective bargaining agreement remains still to be agreed upon by the League and Players' Association.

John Shannon of Sportsnet reported that the NHL will wipe out the remaining 46 exhibitions games on Thursday, cancelling those preseason contests as the lockout continues. Yahoo! Sports has confirmed the report.

While special games like Kraft Hockeyville, the Frozen Fury in Las Vegas and Baltimore Hockey Classic were eliminated last week, gone now are the other notable matchups like the New York Islanders hosting the New Jersey Devils in the first-ever sporting event at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn and the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings Colorado Avalanche facing off in the annual game in Kansas City on Oct. 6.

While most of us wouldn't usually lament the axing of preseason games, with the way the labor negotiations are going, who wouldn't rather be debating your teams' No. 8 defenseman?

Given that it's now Sept. 27, we're drawing ever so closely to the next announcement from the NHL in which regular season games are canceled.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NHL canceled its entire September preseason game schedule on Wednesday, the first on-ice casualty of the four-day lockout.

During the 2004 NHL Lockout, the League announced the cancellation of the preseason and home openers on Sept. 20.

One day short of eight years later, the NHL announced that the 2012-13 preseason schedule through Sept. 30 has been scrubbed thanks to the lockout.

That includes the 2012 Kraft Hockeyville preseason game hosted by Stirling-Rawdon, Ont., between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Hockeyville game was set to become the first appearance of the Leafs in the annual event. From the Ottawa Citizen:

"I've been talking about this for a month, what a kick in the pants it is," Mayor Rodney Cooney said on Tuesday. "It is pretty bad. You win it and something like this happens.

"But it is what it is. It's out of our control. We just have to move on."

Other notable preseason games that are now canceled include ...

• The Frozen Fury game in Las Vegas between the Los Angeles Kings and the Colorado Avalanche at MGM Grand, which would have been the 15th edition of the game.

• The 2012 Baltimore Hockey Classic, between the Washington Capitals and the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sept. 26. Sadly, the official site still has a clock counting down to faceoff.

The Capitals released a statement on the cancellation:

Last year's inaugural Baltimore Hockey Classic, against the Nashville Predators, was a tremendous success as the teams played in front of a sellout crowd of 11,082 fans who witnessed the first professional hockey game played in Baltimore since 1997. The Capitals organization was overwhelmed with the support from the city of Baltimore and our fans in Maryland, and we look forward to bringing this event back to the city in the near future.

• The New Jersey Devils facing the New York Rangers at the Times Union Center in Albany on Sept. 26.

• The Dallas Stars and the Florida Panthers at the AT&T Center in San Antonio on Sept. 29.

Among the games still on the schedule, albeit tenuously: The New York Rangers and Colorado Avalanche in Kansas City on Oct. 6, and the Brooklyn game between the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils on Oct. 2, although Chris Botta of SBJ writes that its cancellation is imminent.

OK, Seattle, let’s see what Russell Wilson can do against a varsity defense

20 Aug

by in General

Rookie quarterback Russell Wilson has appeared in both of Seattle's preseason games, but he hasn't yet thrown a first-half pass. Thus, we can't say what he might do against a first-string NFL defense, even in an exhibition environment.

Here's what we do know: Wilson has shredded the junior varsity Ds from Tennessee and Denver.

He went 12-for-16 for 124 yards against the Titans in his team's preseason opener, throwing for one TD and rushing for another. On Saturday, he went 10-for-17 for 155 yards and two more scores against the Broncos. Here's the tape of Wilson's touchdown run, a designed keeper, and here's a clip of a perfect throw over the middle, away from coverage. Not too shabby -- almost starting-quality, in fact.

If they're having a legit position battle at QB in Seattle, then Wilson needs to get snaps with the starters on Friday at Kansas City. Matt Flynn still hasn't led a touchdown drive during the preseason (although, to be fair, Terrell Owens dropped a beautifully thrown 46-yarder. Hit him in the hands, in stride). Wilson has shown an ability to make plays from the pocket and on the move, at least against second- and third-string competition. This kid was a terror at Wisconsin last season, passing for 33 scores, running for six, completing 72.8 percent of his throws, and tossing just four interceptions. Along the way, Wilson set the single-season FBS record for passing efficiency (191.8).

The primary knock on Wilson is that he's undersized, just 5-foot-11. That's a detail that A) he can't really fix, except with horrible surgery, and B) likely prevented him from being an early first-round pick back in April. There's really no doubting his talent, however. The numbers here are ridiculous.

So will he get a look  with the starters anytime soon?

"We'll see," said Pete Carroll on Saturday. "We have to evaluate all that."

OK, then. Keep evaluating, coach. I'll keep grabbing Wilson in dynasty drafts. I'm in no hurry. Flynn still looks like the favorite to open the season as Seattle's starter, but Wilson has a shot to finish with the gig. Tarvaris Jackson, thanks for playing.
