To celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of the landmark moments in the integration of college basketball, Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis invited Mississippi State and Loyola to play a commemorative game at old Jenison Field House in East Lansing.

Neither the Bulldogs nor the Ramblers were willing to venture off campus to play at the site of their historic 1963 NCAA tournament matchup, so they found another way to commemorate that game.

Mississippi State and Loyola have agreed to a two-year home-and-home series that will begin Dec. 15 when the Bulldogs visit the Ramblers. That will be the first meeting between the two programs since an all-white Mississippi State team defied its state's unwritten laws of segregation and sneaked out of Starkvile to face predominantly black Loyola in the 1963 Mideast Regional semifinals in East Lansing.

"The 1963 SEC champion Bulldogs were given the opportunity previous Mississippi State teams were denied — to compete for a national championship against the best teams in the country," Mississippi State athletic director Scott Stricklin said in a joint statement from the schools.

"To do so, they had to defy a sitting Governor, avoid a court injunction and sneak out of the state. We're excited to join Loyola over the next two seasons in celebrating this historic occasion. Loyola won a national championship; Mississippi State helped to make for a better way of life."

It would have been a treat to see Mississippi State and Loyola play in aging Jenison Field House, but the home-and-home series is a good compromise. Credit Mississippi State for recognizing that it was worthwhile to agree to play on the road at a Horizon League school because of the attention the game will bring to a matchup of historical significance that deserves more spotlight.

The only downside to next season's game is that both teams are rebuilding. Mississippi State lost stars Dee Bost, Arnett Moultrie, Renardo Sidney and Rodney Hood off a team that underachieved last season, while Loyola welcomes eight newcomers after going 7-23 a year ago and finishing last in the Horizon League.

So yes, the quality of play won't be what it was in 1963 when the Ramblers went on to win the national championship, but that won't be the storyline anyway when the two programs meet for the first time in nearly a half century.

"We are thrilled that Mississippi State was willing to partner with us to recognize the historical significance of this contest," Loyola athletic director Dr. M. Grace Calhoun said. "Loyola's 1963 NCAA Tournament game versus Mississippi State served as a vehicle to challenge segregation and helped to forever change college basketball and civil rights in this country."

New Florida commit Chris Walker: ‘We will win a national championship’

23 Jul
2012

In addition to pledging to join AAU teammate and fellow class of 2013 recruit Kasey Hill at Florida next year, highly touted forward Chris Walker also made another promise in the YouTube video he posted Sunday morning.

Walker says he and Hill won't leave Florida without some jewelry for their ring fingers.

"Together we will be the best duo in college and we will win a national championship," Walker said. "You heard it here first."

Such bravado probably isn't wise from a player still 15 months away from even donning a Florida jersey for the first time, but Walker's commitment is significant enough to give the Gators hope of proving him right. At the very least, it silences those who criticized Florida coach Billy Donovan for not being able to land a much-needed big man in the Class of 2012.

Walker, a Florida native and Rivals.com's No. 6 player in the Class of 2013, has been the Gators' top target for several years. The athletic 6-foot-9 forward will help fill the void in the paint created by the likely departures of rising junior Patric Young and rising senior Erik Murphy.

With Walker and Hill arriving for the 2013-14 season and transfers Damontre Harris and Dorian Finney-Smith also set to become eligible, Florida may have as good an influx of talent that year as any team in the nation. Add in a guard-heavy 2012 recruiting class and a handful of veteran role players, and the Gators should be in position to contend both in the SEC and nationally.

Unless Young unexpectedly decides to return for his senior season, the starting frontcourt would probably be Walker and Harris, a transfer from South Carolina who averaged 6.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game last season. Hill, Scottie Wilbekin and Finney-Smith would be an early guess for the starters at point guard, shooting guard and small forward, though 2012 recruits Michael Frazier or Dillon Graham could easily prove they're ready to nab one of the wing positions by then.

The other thing that Walker's commitment ensures is that the meeting between SEC rivals Florida and Kentucky will be one of the most anticipated games of the 2013-14 season. Not only will the Gators and Wildcats likely both be in the national title hunt that season, Walker has also voiced his displeasure multiple times that Kentucky decided not to offer him a scholarship.

It will be up to Walker now to make Kentucky pay. And to make good on his promise to Florida fans that he and Hill will be bringing the school another national championship.

Kim English predicts 50-1 long shot Missouri will win national title

22 Jun
2012

For a guy who played for a program that has never made the Final Four, former Missouri guard Kim English sure has a lot of confidence in his ex-teammates.

English made a bold prediction Thursday after a workout with the Knicks, telling SNY.tv's Adam Zagoria that he expects the Tigers to cut down the nets in Atlanta next April.

"I can say this now that I'm gone, but I expect them to win a national championship without a doubt," English said. "We should've at least went to the Final Four this past year and it definitely left a sour taste in a lot of guys' mouth out there, but they should win a national championship. They're the best team in the nation heading into next season."

It's admirable that English believes in his former teammates, but they'll have to overcome long odds in order to prove him right. Bovada currently lists Missouri's title odds at 50-1, behind such championship long shots as Florida State (25-1), Stanford (30-1) and Georgetown (40-1).

English, Marcus Denmon and Ricardo Ratliffe have graduated from last year's 30-win team that lost to Norfolk State in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, but the Tigers do still have plenty of talent.

Returners Phil Pressey and Michael Dixon form a potent one-two punch in the backcourt. Former all-league forward Laurence Bowers returns after missing last season as a result of a torn ACL. And Alex Oriakhi (UConn), Jabari Brown (Oregon) and Keion Bell (Pepperdine) headline a parade of notable transfers ready to make an immediate impact.

That's a roster that's definitely capable of challenging Florida and Kentucky at the top of the SEC next season if it meshes. Is it also one that can make it to Atlanta and win two games there? It's unlikely, but after the Tigers' surprise success last season, perhaps it would be foolish to rule them out.
