Jeff Gordon to run Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles car at Charlotte

20 Sep
2012

If you're a child of the late 80s and 90s like I am, then I can assure you that Thursday's announcement of Jeff Gordon's special paint scheme for the race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 13 was not your run of the mill paint scheme press conference.

This one involved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Remember spending weekends as a grade schooler with not a care in the world watching TMNT cartoons?  When you look at Gordon's car during the race, you'll probably have fond flashbacks to the time long before smart phones, *NSYNC and the Car of Tomorrow.

Leonardo dons the hood of the car, which is fitting because he was the best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, and that fact is not up for debate. Why? Because he had two swords, and dual swords beat out nunchuks, sais and a bo staff in any type of dual. If the Turtles were to ever mutinize against themselves, there's no doubt that Leonardo would be the last one standing. (Nickelodeon, which currently airs the third incarnation of the animated series, is sponsoring the pre-race festivities at the track. No word if any Ford or Toyota cars will run a special Shredder scheme.)

Gordon also promised Thursday that he would breakdance like he did during banquet week last year if he won at Charlotte. Breakdancing and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? That may be too much.

Stewart and Kenseth don’t anticipate carryover from Bristol crash

28 Aug
2012

Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth have moved on from their tangle on Saturday night.

On Saturday, after the two collided on the track and Stewart flung his helmet at Kenseth, Stewart said that "I'm going to run over him every chance I get for the rest of the year." On Tuesday after a promotional appearance at Charlotte Motor Speedway, he said that he had no intention of seeking Kenseth out on the track for unprovoked retribution.

From the AP:

'You get over that stuff. It's been part of racing for as long as I can remember and that won't be the last time you see two drivers have a disagreement,'' Stewart said, adding he'll only run over Kenseth ''if I need to. It's not our intention to go seek him out.

''We've gotten along more races than we've disagreed.''

Kenseth was at Kansas Speedway on Tuesday for a Goodyear tire test to prepare for the track's newly repaved surface, and he shared Stewart's sentiment and said that the two had more important things to focus on in the next 12 race; namely the championship.

"I think you're going to have problems with people here or there and most times its not one person's fault and you've got to work those problems out and move on," Kenseth said.

"People don't see things the same way. If everybody saw the same thing the same way, there would never be wrecks — well, I guess there would be accidents but there wouldn't be as many."

Stewart added that he was happy that he wasn't penalized for the helmet toss. However, it would have been surprising if he did. Todd Bodine threw his helmet earlier in the year at Pocono and wasn't penalized.

'I figured I was going to get some kind of penalty for it, so it's nice to know that's something you can get away with," Stewart said. "I just wish we could get a more lengthy list of what we can do and can't do. I think we could make it a lot more entertaining if we knew what we could do.''

Did we learn anything about Bristol’s changes in Wednesday’s Truck race?

22 Aug
2012

Wednesday night's Truck Series race at Bristol was the first glimpse – the exit polls, if you will – at the changes that Bristol Motor Speedway made over the spring and summer. And if you were expecting something completely different than the racing that we saw in March, well, you're probably looking for a different set of results.

After the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series races in March, Speedway Motorsports Inc. Bruton Smith promised drastic changes to the track, and those changes involved the grinding of the top groove of the track to reduce the banking from 30 to 28 degrees. When the track was repaved, progressive banking was added, allowing cars to sometimes run three-wide in the corners. And that progressive banking meant that the preferred line on the track wasn't on the bottom, but rather smack dab in the middle.

Wednesday night, Timothy Peters led all 204 laps en route to the win. Yes, you read that correctly. Peters, who started second on the inside of the track, snuck ahead of Cale Gale off of turn 2 on the first lap and no one ever mounted a serious challenge. On the race's ensuing restarts, Peters picked the outside line, and was able to pinch the second place truck down in the corner after the wave of the green flag and once he was clear, was unbeatable.

And that was the story of the evening. While the lane nearest the wall was out of play, the middle (well, the outside) groove was still the preferred line around the track, making passes on the bottom of the banking incredibly tough, and sometimes downright impossible.

Was it a bad race, especially because there wasn't a pass for the lead? No, not at all. In fact, the trucks stacked up side-by-side lap after lap because of the low-groove difficulties made made for an entertaining race -- if you liked what you saw in March, anyway. Yeah, there was your typical short track contact, but there was no rooting and gouging for position on the bottom of the track like at Bristol 10 years ago. It felt like watching any other Bristol race in the last five years. Heck, if you weren't aware of the changes, you may not have known there were any made.

Will we see more of the same Friday and Saturday? We're about to find out.

VIDEO: Austin Dillon clips tire on pit road in Indy Nationwide race

29 Jul
2012

Some tire backspin saved a potentially hazardous situation in the pits during Saturday's Nationwide race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

A tire got away from Johanna Long's pit stall, and Austin Dillon, who was driving past, slid and swerved to try to avoid it on Indy's narrow pit road. He just nicked it, but that sent the tire off of the outside pit lane retaining wall.

At a lot of other bigger tracks, the tire would have harmlessly bounced towards the infield, but since the Indianapolis pit lane is sandwiched between two concrete walls, the tire ricocheted back towards crews making pit stops. But just like a PGA pro's wedge shot, the tire thankfully checked up as soon as it landed back in the middle of pit lane and came to a stop.
