The New York Yankees are the new Atlanta Braves when it comes to October performance

15 Oct
2012

Guaranteed trips to the postseason that are guaranteed to end early. Home playoff games that don't come close to selling out. Andruw Jones hanging out in the clubhouse.

Yes, the New York Yankees have somehow morphed into an Atlanta Braves for the new generation, a franchise that makes disappointment as much a part of its fall as Halloween.

The comparison between the two teams really isn't out there just yet, but it probably should be if the Yankees sink all the way against the Tigers in this ALCS (and, yes, this post probably guarantees a comeback starting against Justin Verlander in Game 3 on Tuesday).

If you stack up the 11 division titles the Braves won after the move to three divisions in 1995 and the Yankees teams since the "Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty" (Game 7 of the 2001 World Series) the postseason records between the two surest bets in the regular season are remarkably similar:

There are differences here, of course. New York boasts a much bigger payroll over that time and blew one ALCS after leading three games to none. But two Yankee teams before that time frame should get credit for stopping two of those Braves teams in the World Series.

[Related: Tigers pitching making quick work of impotent Yankees]

If anything, this comparison of track records really underscores the random nature of the postseason ever since the postseason field expanded to eight teams and the LDS series was made a best-of-five. It also really shows just how special the Yankees were to win four World Series between 1996 and 2001 (while coming within three outs of a fifth).

Still, as the Yankees have transitioned from the homegrown feel of the early Core Four years to the days of wildly spending on the free-agent market, there's no denying that the Yankees have ended their season with feelings of angst more often than not. If you're going to asterisk those great Atlanta Braves teams because of a lack of titles, then you have to do the same with the Yankees over the last 10 or so seasons.

Miguel Cabrera draws criticism from teammate for not talking after Game 4′s loss

11 Oct
2012

When Albert Pujols blew off the media after a loss in the World Series last season, his supporters countered the criticism by saying the controversy was a media creation and that no one inside the clubhouse cared.

Well, here's proof that some players do view a star's shirking of postgame media duties as a sign of weak leadership. Our pal Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com notes that reliever Octavio Dotel got a bit testy with Miguel Cabrera after the Tigers star refused to talk with anyone after Detroit's crushing collapse in Oakland during Game 4 of the ALDS on Wednesday night.

From MLB.com:

But the mood in the clubhouse took a serious turn and tension surfaced when veteran Octavio Dotel told [Miguel] Cabrera to address the media because it was his job as the leader of the team[.]

Cabrera turned down all interview requests and sat at one of the tables in his dress clothes with his arms crossed. Dotel, still in uniform, sat at the other table and shook his head.

Dotel was on last year's Cardinals team, which makes me wonder if he said anything similar to Pujols (who remained in a room that was off-limits to media). If he didn't, why not? The quiet Cabrera has never been a source for good quotes and he maintains a low profile that keeps him a relative mystery to most out-of-town fans and media. His only real duty is to hit baseballs and no one in that clubhouse is going to say anything as long as he keeps filling that role. Still, that blockquoted scene seems to be a pretty good indication of how frustrated and upset that Tigers clubhouse must have been after seeing the ALDS extended another day despite being just three outs away from advancing. Will they come out with a changed outlook for Game 5 on Thursday night?

Break it down, ASAP! Plastic removed from Tigers lockers after A’s ninth-inning comeback

11 Oct
2012
by David Brown in Fantasy Baseball, General

Baseball comebacks like the one the Oakland Athletics pulled off Wednesday night are fun for players and for fans (of the winning side). For sportswriters working on a deadline, or for clubhouse workers anticipating a series clincher, games that suddenly flip can be a terrifying bit of extra work. Take the guys in charge of the visitors clubhouse at the Oakland Coliseum, where they had to tear down protective plastic covering the lockers of the Detroit Tigers after they lost.

Detroit led by two runs in the ninth, just three outs from closing out the A's in four games and advancing to the ALCS. That's not how it ended, of course; Seth Smith tied the score with a two-run double and Coco Crisp brought in the winning run with a two-out RBI single.

No need, then, for the plastic to protect the personal valuables of Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander and the rest. They wouldn't be popping champagne-like liquid and spraying non-alcoholic beer all over the place on this night, making a happy mess. Reporter Anthony Witrado of the Sporting News happened to notice the plastic, ripped down from the lockers and stuffed in a side room:

Most of it, anyway. Reportedly, the locker of Delmon Young still had a sheet of plastic over it. Perhaps by request.

Hey, that plastic can be recycled! (This is "Moneyball" Oakland, after all.) The Tigers get one more crack at the A's on Thursday night. But imagine if we have a tie score in the late innings ... both clubhouses will be adorned in plastic, with one side to be ripped down and left in a heap in another room, so as not to remind the losing side of what could have been, what almost was.
