Contact! Ryan Vogelsong ‘slashes’ and burns Cards with bat and arm

SAN FRANCISCO — Old-timers call it the "Butcher Boy." Youngsters, the "Slash." Whatever its name, the contact made by pitcher Ryan Vogelsong that brought in a run during San Francisco's huge second inning Sunday night proved to be a sign the Giants were on their way to forcing a Game 7 in the NLCS.

Vogelsong's at-bat, along with his dominant nine-strikeout performance over seven innings, helped lead the way in the Giants 6-1 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals at AT&T Park. It's the second time in the series Vogelsong has come up big for the Giants who, after playing on the verge of elimination three times in the first round of the playoffs, are about to do it again with a trip to the World Series at stake.

"I didn't want to let these guys down, I didn't want to let this city down," said Vogelsong, who has a 1.29 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 14 innings in the NLCS.

A former top prospect with the Giants who was traded away and wandered the globe for a decade trying to find success in the majors, Vogelsong leaned on his Christian faith when trying to explain his journey.

"I just believe that God had a plan for me this whole time," said Vogelsong, who turned 35 this summer. "And He's shining down on me right now."

The Giants led 1-0 in the second inning and threatened for more against right-hander Chris Carpenter by putting runners at the corners with one out. On the first pitch to Vogelsong, he showed bunt, but pulled back the bat as Brandon Crawford ran from first. Vogelsong gave a mighty hack and made enough contact for a weak grounder to short, where rookie Pete Kozma bobbled the ball for an error. Vogelsong was given credit for an RBI, as Brandon Belt was moving from third on contact and would have scored regardless.

It was the second critical mistake by Kozma in as many games. Via MLB.com, he made no excuses.

"I just missed it," Kozma said. "I thought I had a handle on it, and the ball just popped out."

Vogelsong hit .093 in the regulat season, striking out 31 times in 54 at-bats. He's a .169 hitter in 166 career at-bats and hit .226 a season ago.

"He's probably as good as anybody on the staff at putting the ball in play on the slash," manager Bruce Bochy said. "You look at his average, you may think different. But he can help you with the little things when you need it."

One out later, Marco Scutaro followed with a two-run double to left, giving the Giants a 4-0 lead. Vogelsong, huffing and puffing all of the way, scored from first standing up. When asked about the extra cushion of runs, he said:

"Well, I was looking for the oxygen first."

Pretending to apologize, Scutaro replied: "Couldn't breathe? Sorry, brother."

Vogelsong wasn't having it.

"You can do it every time, buddy," he said. "I'll take it."

The Giants would take a Vogelsong kind of game any time, from anybody.

Did the refs take a last-second touchdown away from the Buccaneers?

21 Oct
2012

The most controversial call of Week 7 came in Tampa, when Mike Williams apparently caught a potential game-tying touchdown pass as time ran out, only to find that, nope, he hadn't scored after all.

The reason? Williams got shoved out of bounds just before making the catch. No touchdown, Saints win 35-28.

Wait ... WHAT?

Tampa Bay fans might be mad enough to have kittens, but this is actually the correct call. As Fox Sports ref ombudsman Mike Pereira explains, it's a three-part call:

-First, with time expiring, Tampa Bay QB Josh Freeman gets out of the pocket while scrambling to find an open man.

-Second, Saints defender Patrick Robinson shoves Williams out of the back of the end zone. Because Freeman is out of the pocket, this is a legal move by Robinson.

-Third, Williams comes back in bounds and is the first one to touch the ball. That's not allowed, and the game ends because it's the offense's penalty.

From Rule 8, Section 1, Article 8 of the NFL's official rule book:

Illegal Touching of a Forward Pass. It is a foul for illegal touching if a forward pass (legal or illegal), thrown from behind the line of scrimmage:

(a) is first touched intentionally or is caught by an ineligible offensive player; or

(b) first touches or is caught by an eligible receiver who has gone out of bounds, either of his own volition or by being legally forced out of bounds, and has re-established himself inbounds.

So, yeah, you could say the Bucs got hosed, but it was all legal. Of course, Robinson probably wasn't exactly thinking that Freeman was out of the pocket, but the refs don't throw flags based on mind-reading. (They'd be scared for their lives if they did.) Bottom line: this one just didn't break the Bucs' way.

Of course, if they hadn't allowed Drew Brees to throw for four touchdowns in the first half, this wouldn't have been an issue. Just saying.

Blue Jackets broadcasters surprise fans at local bar with ‘opening night’ call of Xbox simulation

20 Oct
2012

On Friday, the NHL canceled the 2012-13 schedule through Nov. 1, bringing the grand total of games missed to 135. Friday was supposed to be the home opener at Nationwide Arena for the Columbus Blue Jackets as they hosted the Vancouver Canucks.

To drown their sorrows, fans gathered at R Bar, the local establishment right near Nationwide to ponder what might have happened against the defending Presidents' Trophy winners. But it wasn't just going to be a normal night at R Bar. The place had organized an event surrounding the X Box simulation of what should have been the game against the Canucks.

Then things -- in the words of Champ Kind -- jumped up a notch.

The team's anthem singer, Leo Welsh, showed up to perform the National Anthem before the "game" and later in the evening members of the Blue Jackets television and radio broadcast teams made an appearance to do some work.

From The Dark Blue Jacket:

Long about the third period, something momentous happened.  The 'boys' showed up.  That's right.  Jeff Rimer, Bill Davidge, and George Matthews all came to participate in the camaraderie of the night.  It was great having them in the bar that night.  But then the treat started.  From their well deserved perch at the bar, George Matthews and Bill Davidge proceeded to call the simulated game.  For yours truly this was a blast from the past back to old radio days.  Additionally, there are certain freedoms that happen when one is not subject to FCC regs on over the air broadcasts, and George and Bill took perfect advantage of the liberties to give an exciting and heartfelt call to the simulated game, supported by raucous cheering of the patrons.

Blue Jackets blog Arch City Army shot a quick video of the festivities:

The EA Sports game kept its realism and the Canucks were victorious in the end, but on the day when the future of the actual hockey season was put further in doubt, those Blue Jackets fans got to experience something really cool on what otherwise was going to be a normal Friday night at the bar.

Bruce Bochy jokes with Yadier Molina: ‘Don’t call that pitch any more’ (Video)

19 Oct
2012

With his big ol' Country Bear Jamboree voice, San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy wields an underrated sense of humor and delivery from time to time. One of them was on Friday night when Fox Sports television cameras picked up one of his funny exchanges during a 5-0 NLCS Game 5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

With his third baseman Pablo Sandoval grimacing in pain after fouling a Lance Lynn curve ball off his foot in the first inning, Bochy took a break from checking on his player to turn to Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina. What he delivered was a simple instruction that got an amused look from the home plate umpire.

"Don't call that pitch any more."

Ah yes, catcher humor. To that point, Molina had called for Lynn's curveball on three of the four pitches that Kung Fu Panda had faced. And while you think Yadi might possess enough stubbornness to call a curveball once Bochy had returned to the dugout, he ended up calling for two straight fastballs to retire the hobbled Sandoval on a strikeout.

While Sandoval looked to be favoring the foot afterward, he hit a home run to lead off the top of the eighth inning to finalize the 5-0 final score. Bochy said afterward the Sandoval is fine and expects to play in Sunday's Game 6.

KHL suspends referees, demotes linesmen after blown call on Lokomotiv goal (VIDEO)

16 Oct
2012

Remember that time when an official made a bad call in a game that cost one team a win? Remember when you would complain that the official should be punished for making such a terrible decision that affected a game?

Well, the KHL is way ahead of you.

During Lokomotiv's 3-2 shootout victory over Traktor, their goal that made the game 2-1 in the second period should have never counted thanks to a missed "too many men" call.

Here's video of the controversial goal:

Serious shades of Penguins-Red Wings and Avalanche-Canadiens there.

Traktor complained to the KHL after the game, and the league has responded by suspending all four officials involved in the game.

From Ria Novosti:

The KHL accepted Traktor's complaint that Lokomotiv had six players on the ice when Sergei Plotnikov made it 2-1 to the visitors in the second period.

"There was a controversial episode associated with too many men on the ice for Yaroslavl in a scoring attack," the KHL said in a website statement. "There was a grave mistake made by the referees."

"The referees were required to cite too many men for Lokomotiv and call a minor violation by the team."

The two head officials will be banned for three games, while the linesmen will not work another KHL game this season and instead have been sent down to the Russian Major League.

You know, if the NHL is really looking to make in-roads in the PR battle, maybe a public announcement of referee punishments would quell some anger next time a high-stick or offside is missed?

Just think of how much shorter Stephane Auger's career would have been.

ALCS Game 2: Anibal Sanchez and Tigers take 2-0 series lead after four-hit shutout of Yankees

14 Oct
2012

Score and situation: The Detroit Tigers took advantage of a flagging New York Yankees offense and a late blown call to record a 3-0 win in Game 2 of the ALCS on Sunday. The victory gives them a two games to none lead in the series as it shifts to Detroit for the middle three games.

Leading lads: Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez pitched just the way the Tigers wanted him to when they acquired him in a midseason trade from Miami. The righthander threw seven scoreless innings, striking out seven while allowing three hits and three walks to the Yankees lineup. New York starter Hiroki Kuroda pitched even better by carrying a perfect game into the sixth inning, but gave up three runs (only  one of which was truly earned) and was stuck with the hard-luck loss after striking out a career-high 11 batters through 7 2/3 innings.

[Related: Yankees try to disguise empty seats at ALCS by moving fans ]

Head hangers:  Robinson Cano is your new poster child for the inefficiency of the Yankees offense, which managed only four hits on the night. Cano went 0 for 4 to extend his hitless streak to 0 for 26, the longest drought in postseason history. No one in the New York lineup, however, was exempt from blame as the Yankees offense continued to struggle.

Second base umpire Jeff Nelson belongs in this spot too after blowing a call at second base. Though Cano's tag looked pretty evident for an out, Nelson ruled that Omar Infante was safe after trying to return to the bag and the inning was allowed to continue (though not before Joe Girardi was thrown out of the game for arguing the call). The Tigers used the opportunity to tack on two insurance runs to Kuroda's tab that they wouldn't end up needing any way.

Key play: Quintin Berry led off the top of the seventh with a ground-rule double. He'd later score the first run of the game on a fielder's choice by Delmon Young.

Interesting stat: Sunday's game was the first Yankees postseason game that didn't feature Derek Jeter in the lineup since Game 5 of the 1995 ALDS. Jeter had played 158 straight postseason game for the Yankees, a streak that ended after he fractured his ankle in the 12th inning of Game 1 on Saturday night.

What they'll be talking about: There will be a lot of instant replay talk as a blown call against the Yankees stood out in both Games 1 and 2. But they're not solely to blame as the Yankees just cannot hit the ball. Expect a lot lineup dissection over the next two days as New York tries to figure out what went wrong. As for the Tigers, it's all about their stellar starting pitching. You have to have good efforts from your starters if you want to win a World Series and Detroit's pitchers are doing just that. They've thrown 29 scoreless innings since Sanchez surrendered a homer in Game 3 of the ALDS and have a collective 0.93 ERA over 48 innings pitched this postseason.

What's next: The series shifts to Detroit's Comerica Park for Tuesday's Game 3 at 8:07 p.m. ET. Justin Verlander gets the start for Detroint and can put the Tigers on the brink of the World Series with a win. Phil Hughes is scheduled to start for the Yankees with Girardi still insisting that he won't move up Game 4 starter CC Sabathia to pitch on short rest.

Josh Gordon makes another long-distance house call

14 Oct
2012
by in General

Josh Gordon's last three catches, as of this writing, have gone for 153 yards and three touchdowns. So the Cleveland rookie seems to be making the most of his opportunities.

Gordon caught a pair of TD passes in Week 5 against the Giants — the first went for 62 yards, the next for 20 — and he hauled in a 71-yard score on Sunday against Cincinnati. Highlight here.

Gordon sliced through a Bengals secondary that couldn't run with him (or chose not to), and then made a nifty one-handed catch on Brandon Weeden's throw. Nicely done.

This week, the Browns' receiving corps is without Mohamed Massaquoi (hamstring), Travis Benjamin (another hamstring) and Jordan Norwood (foot, IR), so the team will need whatever Gordon can give. He's clearly on the fantasy radar, available in 89 percent of Yahoo! leagues.

Of course Gordon is also a raw, first-year, 21-year-old wideout tied to a raw, first-year, 65-year-old quarterback, so we have to be careful not to oversell him as a fantasy asset. Still, you have to like what you've seen so far.

If you're among the very small percentage of fantasy owners who gave Gordon a start this week as a Hail Mary, please take a (premature) victory lap in comments...

ALCS Game 1: Tigers overcome late Yankees heroics, emerge with 6-4 win in extras

13 Oct
2012

Score and situation: The Detroit Tigers walked the tightrope early and then nearly saw the entire game slip away thanks to Jose Valverde's ninth inning meltdown. Yet somehow, someway, they averted a complete disaster escaped with a 6-4 win over the New York Yankees in 12 innings on Saturday night in the Bronx.

Leading lads: Delmon Young was the offensive star for Detroit. He had three hits, including a home run off Derek Lowe in the eighth and the go-ahead RBI double in the 12th inning that proved to be the winner. He knocked in three.

Tigers starter Doug Fister was wobbly most of the evening, but tough as nails when he needed to be. Over his 6 1/3 eventful innings, he allowed 11 base runners, but escaped every situation unscathed. He was also struck hard on the wrist by a Robinson Cano line drive in the second inning. That he was able to continue beyond that point is a testament to his toughness.

[Related: Wrong call hurts Yankees in the second inning]

For New York, that man did it again. With the Yankees down to their final out, Raul Ibanez launched a two-out, two-run homer to tie the game against soon to be former Tigers closer Jose Valverde. Earlier in the inning, Ichiro Suzuki also connected for a two-run homer that cut Detroit's lead in half. He finished the night 4 for 6.

Head hangers: The Yankees left the bases loaded three times in the first six innings. Granted, one of those rallies was cut short by a blown call at first base, but their quality of at-bats with runners in scoring position left a lot to be desired. In fact, they went 1 for 10 in those situations outside of the ninth inning, with the lone hit being of the infield variety.

The disastrous postseason for Jose Valverde continues. After blowing the save in Game 4 of the ALDS, which forced Detroit to use Justin Verlander in Game 5, he was even worse in a non-save situation on Saturday night, blowing a 4-0 ninth inning lead by allowing the two two-run homers to Ichiro and Ibanez.

[Also: No show: Yankees try to disguise empty seats at ALCS by moving fans]

Key play: For the first 8 1/2 innings, the biggest play in the game was a missed call by first base umpire Rob Drake in the second inning that cost the Yankees at least one run, and potentially many more as New York's inning would have continued with the bases still loaded. That changed, however, when Raul Ibanez connected for his game-tying home run. And then it changed again in the 12th when Young doubled past a diving Nick Swisher in right field.

Interesting stat I: Raul Ibanez and Alex Rodriguez are now the only two players to hit two game-tying home runs in the ninth inning or later in the same postseason.

Interesting stat II: The Yankees have scored 11 runs in the ninth inning or later this postseason. That have scored nine total runs before the ninth inning.

What they'll be talking about: Derek Jeter's fractured ankle suffered in the 12th inning is the big story coming out. We'll likely hear a lot of questions about whether he should have even been out there, but the bottom line is Jeter's season is over. Also, was Jim Leyland watching the same game as everyone else? His loyalty to Jose Valverde in the ninth inning was mind-boggling, and it nearly cost his Tigers a big Game 1 victory.

[Slideshow: Derek Jeter breaks ankle in Yankees' loss to Tigers]

What's next: The roller coaster ride for New York continues on Sunday afternoon. After surviving and advancing against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night, the Yankees find themselves right back in trouble with a very important Game 2 starring them in the face, and they'll have to face it without their captain. That game is scheduled for 4:00 ET, and will feature a pitching matchup of Hiroki Kuroda vs. Anibal Sanchez.
