GNUru Mailbag:Young and the Restless (Fantasy Owners)

Michael YoungI’m in a Yahoo Head-to-Head league and currently in 2nd place.  I have BJ Ryan currently in my disabled list (DL) slot.  I also have Howie Kendrick and Mike Piazza on my team, who are also on the DL, as reserves.  In my league, Michael Young has been released and is now a free agent.  My infield is as follows: Pudge @ catcher, Jeff Kent @ 1B, Chase Utley @ 2B, and Miguel Tejada @ SS.

Should I pick up young to back up Tejada? Will Young heat up soon? Also, should I drop any of my DL guys or ride it out till they return?

The owner who dropped Michael Young made one of the most common mistakes in fantasy baseball- that is, drop a proven fantasy baseball player off to a slow start.  In the article, “So the Season, Has Started Now What?”, the GNUru advises owners to be ready to pounce on under-performing stars who are dropped by impatient owners.  The case you describe with Michael young certainly fits the bill.  Although Young is off to a terrible start (.194 AVG., 2 HRs, 14 RBI), he has also hit over .300 for 4 consecutive seasons. When all is said and done, Young will be back near his career averages.  So, Yes, pick up Michael Young immediately.  The best part about snagging a player that is off to a slow start is that you will reap the rewards when they heat up.  Since Michael Young has a lot of heating up to do, the payout should be mighty nice!  If you do have to release someone to clear room for  Young, Piazza is your man.  Piazza is getting up there in age and although he has multi-position eligibility, he has not performed up to expectations this year hitting just 1 HR in 103 at bats.  Throw in the fact that he will be out for 4-6 weeks makes this any easy decision.
