Curtis Granderson has become sort of an enigma around fantasy baseball circles. On one hand you see a talented young player with loads of potential, and the other, a player that can't make consistent enough contact to make a big fantasy impact. At 26 years of age, the Chicagoland native still has plenty of room to grow and has tremendous upside. The fact that he plays for an excellent team in the Detroit Tigers and his unique combination of speed and power are enough to keep him on anyone's fantasy radar. His charming personality (anyone listen to him seemingly daily on MLB Homeplate?), dedication to the game of baseball, and general likeability propel Mr. Granderson into the realm of a Sexy Pick. But before you go labeling Curtis the next Carlos Beltran, Carl Crawford, or Grady Sizemore, the GNUru is here to remind you to keep your expectations in perspective. Granderson's career, at this juncture, is more reminiscent of Corey Patterson.

Looking at Granderson's first full season in the Major Leagues, one can easily see he has the potential to breakout in a big way. His 19 homeruns display some pop and 90 runs and 155 hits are pretty impressive for a relative rookie.

However, after looking at his numbers in more depth, it becomes apparent Granderson has his flaws. Not unlike most young players, Granderson is plagued by inconsistency, poor plate discipline, and the inability to hit left handed pitching. Most troubling are his 174 strikeouts and his .218 average against left-handed pitching. To his credit, Granderson worked his tail off this spring trying to make more contact by eliminating unnecessary movement during his approach. Not only will this boost his OBP but it should also help him when facing left-handed pitching.
Granderson should improve upon last years numbers across the board- You can expect 22-25 Hrs, 70 + RBI, and 15-20 SBs. Although he is not quite ready to breakout and lead your fantasy team towards a championship, if used correctly, he can certainly be a productive member of your fantasy team. Granderson will gradually get better and better as he learns his way around the MLB- just don't expect a magical breakout season as I am sure CBS Sportsline will hype for their featured 2008 age 27 breakout players.

Well he'll get plenty of playing time just with his glove irregardless of whether or not he can hit lefties. I like his poriduction playing everyday in that lineup!

I would not even own Granderson as a 4th outfielder. That bum was so unreliable last year that I will never make the mistake of playing him again!
