GNUru Mailbag: Ham's the Man!

Josh HamiltonIn my fantasy draft last Saturday, I drafted James Loney and Dustin Hermanson late. As you know, Loney was sent to the minors and Hermanson was released. I need to replace them. My league is NL only, 5x5, with 11 teams. For Loney, I'm thinking of: Mike Lamb, Josh Hamilton, Olmedo Saenz, Scott Spiezio, Jeff Baker or Jeff Conine.

Who's your best pick?

For Hermanson, I'm thinking of: Pedro Feliciano, Geoff Geary, Juan Cruz,or Mike Stanton. I could use wins, however, so I'm also looking at (ugh) Carlos Villanueva, Wandy Rodriguez, Victor Santos or Oliver Perez.

My Roster:
Eliezer Alfonzo SF C
David Ross CINC C
Carlos Delgado NYM 1B
James Loney (Minors)LA 1B
Ronnie Belliard WAS 2B
J.J. Hardy MLW SS
Rich Aurilia SF 3B
Wilson Betemit LA 3B
Jason Bay PIT OF
Endy Chavez NYM OF
Andre Ethier LA OF
Matt Holliday COL OF
Carlos Lee HOU OF
Scott Thorman ATL OF
Matt Capps PIT R
Mike Gonzalez ATL R
Dustin Hermanson (Released) CIN R
Trevor Hoffman SD R
Scott Linebrink SD R
Derek Lowe LA S
Rafael Soriano ATL R
Adam Wainwright STL S
Chris Young Start SD S

Please give me your thoughts

With a solid starting lineup and some quality reserves, I think you best bet is to think big.  By big the GNUru means go with players who have some upside that could help you team.  Guys like Olmedo Saenz, Scott Spezio, Mike Lamb, or Jeff Conine are not going to make much of a fantasy impact for you.  With upside in mind, the GNUru thinks you should take a chance on Josh Hamilton.  Hamilton has the pedigree to be an impact player as he was the #1 overall pick in the 1999 draft.  His success in spring training was no fluke.  If he can keep himself clean it’s only a matter of time before injury prone players like Ken Griffey Jr. and Ryan P. Freel open up an everyday spot for the 26 year old.

The same goes for your other free roster spot.  Go with the player with the most upside, Mr. Oliver Perez.  While he may be a head case, pitching guru (not to be confused with the GNUru) Rick Peterson has been known to turn around a few careers.  Oliver has a spot in the rotation and the potent Mets lineup will surely provide him with adequate run support.

Thanks for the question and best of luck this fantasy season!
