Hi Gnuru,Chase Utley

I'm in a 16-team, Head-to-Head, Keeper, standard scoring CBS league and was offered the following trade.  Francisco Rodriguez and Robinson Cano for my Chase Utley and Joel Zumaya. The way I see it is Utley > Cano and K-Rod > Zumaya but the difference is only slight.  Do you think Cano is for real or will he be the next Jorge Cantu?

First of all, this is one of the most equal trades I have seen in a long while as each team gains in an area slightly, and each team loses slightly in an area.  Utley and K-Rod are the tops at their respective positions, while both Cano and Zumaya have a lot of hype surrounding them, but still have their question marks. All things being equal( which they never are), the GNUru would probably choose to decline this offer as Utley at 2B has a greater value over replacement than that of Francisco Rodriguez.  In addition, Zumaya has considerable value in keeper leagues as the heir apparent to the closer role in Detroit.

Though, if you are lacking a dominant closer and are concerned about winning now, you may want to reconsider.  This deal is close enough in terms of absolute value that if this deal fills a void, it is a smart move.  The GNUru does not believe Cano will be another Jorge Cantu but you're also likely to see a slight decline in numbers from him in 2007.  Regardless, Cano will be a top 5 second baseman for years to come.  Also remember that Zumaya has not shown the ability to be a dominant closer just yet and his value is probably as high as it will ever be in a keeper league.

You'd be surprise how similar h2h is to roto. The only thing you really need to keep in mind is that SB unimportant in H2H leagues. While Crawford is ranked very high for his SB potental, he doesn't grade out nearly as high in H2H leagues. Other than watching out for SB traps, consistency is key in head to head. You don't want a team loaded with guys who go on prolonged slumps...that can put your team in a slump.

12 team head to head league. having never played h-2-h before just trying to figure out how to change/adapt strategy from roto days...i was happy with some late round picks i got, young guys with potential. tulowitzki, victorino etc. hopefully be able to keep 'em around and they'll pay off...

noooo way Gnu. I normally agree with you but make this deal. Chase is overrated and Zumaya isnt even a closer.
