Startling Starters...

While it's still too early to read to much into the early season stats, many unheralded players are off to impressive starts.  If you drafted, picked up, or traded for some of the following players, your fantasy team is likely off to an equally impressive start.  Although it would be foolish to count on this kind of production to continue for some of these players, stranger things have been known to happen.

Braden LooperBraden Looper - St. Louis Cardinals

P

ERA

Although Looper was considered somewhat of a sleeper heading into the 2007 season, Braden has never produced consistently despite having good stuff.  While you can expect his production to come back down to earth, Looper has emerged as a viable starting pitching option.

Jason BergmannJason Bergmann - Washington Nationals

Although the wins have been in short supply, Bergmann has been stellar thus far this season as evidenced by his 2.76 ERA.  If your looking for wins you may want to look elsewhere but Jason can help you in just about every other category.

Gil MecheGil Meche - Kansas City Royals

The Gil Meche signing made the Kansas City Royals the laughing stock of the purported baseball experts.  However, Meche has performed up to the lofty expectations (and money) the Royals placed on him.  While the wins have been difficult to come by Meche has been stellar in every other fantasy baseball category.

Ted LillyTed Lilly -  Chicago Cubs

IP

Ted Lilly was another winter signing that more than raised a few eyebrows with his lofty contract.  Fantasy owners and the Chicago Cubs have been rewarded with a great start to his National League career.

James ShieldsJames Shields - Tampa Bay Devil Rays

P

ERA
Ks
BB

3.13

Despite pitching for the dismal Devil Rays, Shields has impressed early and has continued to do so.  Like many of the above, don't expect the wins to start piling up but you can count on solid numbers across the board.

John MaineJohn Maine - New York Mets

P
W-L
ERA
Ks
BB
50.1
5-1
2.15
45

Despite getting knocked around by the Chicago Cubs, John Maine has been rather impressive.  While he certainly needs to cut down the walks if he is to cement himself as a viable fantasy starting pitcher, the Mets offense will provide him with plenty of run support to make up for his short-comings.

Ian SnellIan Snell -  Pittsburg Pirates

IP
W-L
ERA
Ks
BB
53
3-2
2.38
43
17

At risk of sounding like a broken record, Ian Snell is another pitcher on a bad team that has many surprised.  While Snell was considered a sleeper, not many thought he would perform at this level.  Again, don't expect a bunch-load of wins but his numbers across the board can help your fantasy cause.

Tom GorzelannyTom Gorzelanny - Pittsburg Pirates

IP
W-L
ERA
Ks
BB
53
5-2
2.36
34
13

Another Pirates pitcher makes this list  and unlike Snell, Gorzelanny has found a way to win some ball games.  Tom is a former top prospect finally given his opportunity.

Jason MarquisJason Marquis - Chicago Cubs

P
W-L
ERA
Ks
BB
52.2
5-1
2.22
25
16

Marquis was yet another perceived foolish free agent signing, gone good.  Marquis, who was left for dead by the Cardinals, has found his sinker again and is pitching the best baseball he ever has.  While the strikeouts are lacking, the Cubs will score some runs for him.
