  • Mets split DH with Phils, stay atop East (AP)

Philadelphia Phillies' Jimmy Rollins leaves the field after making the last out of a 6-3 Mets win in the second game of a baseball double-header Sunday night, Sept. 7, 2008, at Shea Stadium in New York.

The Mets want this September to end much better than the last one. Carlos Delgado and Johan Santana give them two big reasons to believe it will. Delgado hit two long homers and drove in four runs, backing a huge win by Santana as New York beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 on Sunday night for a doubleheader split.

  • Red Sox win, now 1 1/2 back of Rays (AP)

Texas Rangers third base coach Matt Walbeck (3) congratulates Taylor Teagarden as Teagarden rounds the bases following his solo home run in the eighth inning of a baseball game, Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in Arlington, Texas. The Red Sox won 7-2.

David Ortiz immediately tossed the bat aside. Big Papi hadn't forgotten the home run trot. And the Boston Red Sox haven't forgotten how to make September exciting in Beantown. Ortiz homered for the first time in 20 games, Paul Byrd pitched 6 2-3 scoreless innings for his fourth straight victory and the Red Sox beat the Texas Rangers 7-2 Sunday, moving within 1 1/2 games of the AL East lead.

  • Dodgers beat Arizona to go up 1 1/2 (AP)

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Jonathan Broxton (51) celebrates with teammates after a baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in Los Angeles. The Dodger won 5-2.

The Dodgers appear to have the Arizona Diamondbacks on the run, although they won't dare admit it. James Loney had three RBIs and Los Angeles completed a three-game sweep of Arizona on Sunday with a 5-3 victory that gave it a 1 1/2 -game lead on the Diamondbacks in the NL West. It was the eighth series of three or more games that the Dodgers have swept, including a four-game set against the...

  • Mets say Wagner may be out for season (AP)

Billy Wagner is expected to miss the rest of the season, leaving the New York Mets without their All-Star closer as they try to maintain a slim lead in the NL East. Wagner has been sidelined since Aug. 3 because of a tender pitching elbow. He has tried several times to work his way back, but hasn't been able to shake the pain.

  • Purcey helps Jays top Rays, finish sweep (AP)

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Matt Garza, left, and pitching coach Jim Hickey stand in the dugout during eighth-inning AL action against the Toronto Blue Jays in Toronto on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008. The Jays won the game 1-0, sweeping the series.

Matt Garza and David Purcey locked up in another great pitching matchup, but this time it was Purcey who picked up the win. The rookie left-hander pitched eight shutout innings, helping Toronto complete a three-game sweep with a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, and extending the Blue Jays' winning streak to eight games.

  • Indians' Lee picks up MLB-best 21st win (AP)

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Cliff Lee throws in the first inning of a baseball game against the Kansas City Royals Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in Kansas City, Mo. Lee won his 10th straight decision, the longest winning streak in the majors this season, and the Indians defeated the Kansas City Royals 3-1.

Cliff Lee said he does not pinch himself about the dream season he is having. Lee won his 10th straight decision, the longest winning streak in the majors this season, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1 on Sunday. Lee, who leads the majors with 21 wins, is 10-0 in 11 starts since a July 6 loss at Minnesota.

  • Padres' Young perfect for 7 2-3 in win (AP)

San Diego Padres' Will Venable hits an RBI single during the third inning of a baseball game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in Milwaukee. The Padres won 10-1.

Chris Young came within four outs of perfection, a major accomplishment for a guy whose season has been anything but perfect. Young retired the first 23 Brewers in order before Gabe Kapler homered, and the San Diego Padres beat Milwaukee 10-1 on Sunday. Not bad for a guy who missed nine weeks after a scorching liner from Albert Pujols broke his nose.

  • Reds rally past Cubs with 3 in 9th (AP)

Cincinnati Reds' Jolbert Cabrera, left, is hugged by teammate Chris Dickerson, right, after Cabrera hit a game-winning single off Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood in the bottom of the ninth inning during a baseball game, Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in Cincinnati. The Reds won 4-3.

Lou Piniella got lost on his way to Cincinnati, and the Chicago Cubs manager wasn't in the mood to talk as he headed out of town Sunday. Jolbert Cabrera hit a game-ending RBI single off Cubs closer Kerry Wood to complete Cincinnati's three-run ninth inning and give the Reds a 4-3 win. NL Central-leading Chicago has lost seven of eight and is off Monday before beginning a three-game series at St.

  • Saunders helps Angels avoid sweep (AP)

Los Angeles Angels' Garret Anderson watches his sacrifice fly during the eighth inning of a baseball game against Chicago White Sox on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 in Chicago. The Angels won 3-2.

As soon as he arrived, Mark Teixeira heard the warning from Angels manager Mike Scioscia: Forget about October. Teixeira's still trying to keep it out of mind even though the playoffs are very much in sight. Joe Saunders flashed his All-Star form while earning his first win in over a month, and Los Angeles rallied to beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 Sunday, avoiding a three-game sweep.

  • Twins fail to gain ground on White Sox (AP)

Detroit Tigers Miguel Cabrera, right, is congratulated by third base coach Gene Lamont after hitting a solo home run against the Minnesota Twins during the sixth inning of a baseball game, Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 in Minneapolis. The Tigers won 7-5.

The Minnesota Twins are starting to wilt in the heat of the pennant race. Minnesota got another mediocre outing from its starting pitcher, the bullpen failed to get a key out, and the timely hits were again absent in a 7-5 loss to Detroit on Sunday. Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez and Dusty Ryan homered for the Tigers.
