Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez does not have a defined role entering the second half, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The club will attempt to decide whether Martinez will continue to pitch out of the bullpen in the majors, or be a full-time starter in Triple-A Memphis. Manager Mike Matheny said it’s about balancing need with upside. “For his development, it’s better for him to be prepared to start. It’s tough to weigh. We know he wants to be here. We like having him here. We think he can help us. But there is more that goes into the decision,” Matheny said.
Martinez has a 3.60 ERA in 10 innings out of the bullpen in the majors. He has a 1.98 ERA in eight starts in Triple-A.
