Bruce Chen, a journeyman left-hander who began the season in the minors and had a 1-13 record in the previous four years in the majors, knocked the Tampa Bay Rays into second place in the AL East. Chen threw the first shutout of his major league career, a two-hitter, in the Kansas City Royals' 7-0 victory over the struggling Rays.
