The sense of satisfaction must be strong anytime a major leaguer swings at a pitch and deposits it over a wall 300 or more feet away. But to do the same thing with a broken bat? I'll never understand how the primal surge of ego and pride doesn't compel the hitter to roar around the bases while flexing his muscles and waving the bat shards over his head.

Watch as Baltimore's Chris Davis hits a two-run homer with a snapped twig during Wednesday's 7-1 clubbing of the Pittsburgh Pirates:

Davis' strength has never been a big question, of course. When he was 22, he hit 17 homers over 80 games for the 2008 Texas Rangers and 21 for the team the next season. He's always struggled with strikeouts, though, and his weak OBPs led to being traded with Tommy Hunter to Baltimore in exchange for pitcher Koji Uehara.

Now 26, Davis is on his way to the best season of his career so far. Thursday's homer was his 12th of the season and it continued his recent tear. Over the past 21 games, he's hitting .350 with seven homers and 16 RBIs.  His season slash line rests at a healthy .304/.344/.538 with 56 strikeouts to 10 walks.

The most recent broken-bat homer in memory came last season when a Colorado Rockies minor leaguer named Jordan Pacheco did it for the Colorado Spring Sky Sox. In a similar odd bit, Cincinnati's Todd Frazier made the news last month when he hit a ball out of Great American Ballpark despite losing the grip on his bat.
