Smith, and not Charles, replacing L.J.?

The News The Kansas City Star speculates that it may eventually be Kolby Smith, and not Jamaal Charles, that takes over for Larry Johnson as the Chiefs' feature back. Our View Charles carried the ball six times for 36 yards last Sunday, while Smith went four times for 17. Neither is a great play at the moment, but if you own one, you either need to own or be closely monitoring the other. Read More

Smith, Grant likely to begin suspensions next week

The News Saints defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant may have to begin their four-game suspensions for violating the league's drug policy next week, according to ESPN. Our View The court ruling that overturned Pat and Kevin Williams' suspensions does not apply to Smith and Grant because they do not work in the state of Minnesota (the Williams' won their suit by claiming the NFL violated Minnesota drug-testing laws). The court said the suspensions violated only Minnesota law, and not federal law, marooning Smith and Grant. It's a good bet the suspensions will be served as soon as possible. Read More

Smith, Bengals close to deal

The News ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that Andre Smith has not yet signed a deal with the Bengals despite a Twitter post by Chad OchoCinco that claimed he had. A source close to the situation claims that a deal is not done, but it could be finished in the next 24-to-48 hours. Our View Chad may have gotten this one wrong, but at least he was close. It looks like the deal is very close to being done, and there should be an announcement in the coming days. As bad as the offensive line looked in the team's last game, they need Smith to make a contribution at some point soon. Read More

Smith, Kokonis exchange words

The News According to the Akron Beacon-Journal, former Brown and current Lions' defensive tackle Shaun Smith gave Browns' GM George Kokonis an "expletive-filled tongue lashing" in the hallway Saturday night. Smith was released by Kokonis and the Browns earlier this month. Our View Smith was dismissed from the Browns largely because of his propensity to run his mouth, so Kokonis is probably feeling pretty good about the move right about now. Smith needs to improve his attitude if he wants to make an impact at the NFL level, and this certainly will not go over well with his new squad in Detroit. Read More

Smith, Allen return to practice

The News According to the Twitter page of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Omar Kelly, Dolphins' cornerbacks Sean Smith and Jason Allen returned to practice Monday. It has been confirmed that the duo did not have Swine Flu, but they did have a case of the regular flu. Our View It's pretty safe to say that those two wouldn't be on the field today if they had Swine Flu. Both players should be fine going forward, and Smith was working with the first-team defense today. Read More

Smith, Bengals $5-$10 million apart

The News According to ProFootballTalk.com, the Bengals are still not close to a deal with first-round pick Andre Smith. The two sides are reportedly $5-$10 million apart in negotiations at this point. Our View Wow this is not good for the Bengals. $5-$10 mil apart makes you think that this holdout is going to go on for a long time. Don't expect to see Smith wearing the stripes anytime soon unless one of the two sides gives in. Read More

Smith, Felton competing for job

The Lions are looking for their starting FB between Terrelle Smith and Jerome Felton. But mlive.com reports that Smith could have the inside edge because he's accustomed to not carrying the football and the new coaching staff isn't likely to give it to him. Smith, who is entering his 10th NFL season, is the ultimate blocking fullback. In his rookie season of 2000 with the New Orleans Saints, Smith carried the ball 29 times. In the eight years that followed, Smith has carried the ball a total of 29 times. Last year with the Arizona Cardinals, Smith got a carry in the first preseason game and then didn't carry the ball once in the regular season - he played in 15 games (and started six). Smith didn't get a carry in four playoff games, including starts in the NFC Championship game and the Super Bowl. Read More
