Atlantic 10 Preview: Saint Louis interim coach Jim Crews has big shoes to fill

Two years after being fired at Army just weeks before the start of what would have been his eighth season at the school, Jim Crews had no intention of reentering the coaching industry.

Crews, 58, had moved to Indianapolis with his wife and had begun dabbling as a TV analyst for the Big Ten network. About the closest he had come to coaching was working a few basketball camps and clinics for girls in elementary school.

All that changed days before the start of practice for the 2011-12 season when Saint Louis coach Rick Majerus called and told Crews he had an unexpected late vacancy on his staff because one of his assistants had left for an NBA gig. A hesitant Crews initially insisted he was content in retirement, but his longtime friend Majerus wouldn't take no for an answer.

"He tried to make it sound as short as possible by saying it would only be for 4 1/2 months," Crews recalled with a chuckle. "He said, 'There's no dress code, all the food you can eat, we'll laugh a lot and I think we can really win.' What else do you want in a job besides that? Eventually, I told my wife, 'What the heck, let's do it.'"

[More Atlantic 10: VCU, Butler add to league]

Turns out Crews' breezy 4 1/2-month gig has become a bit more demanding than he originally expected. First, he accepted Majerus' offer to remain a second year as an assistant. Then Majerus had to abruptly step away from the program in late August as a result of health problems, leading Saint Louis to ask Crews to accept the title of interim replacement because he had the most head coaching experience of anyone on staff at the time.

Suddenly, Crews had to decide whether to accept the task of leading a Saint Louis team considered the most talented of the Majerus era, quite an undertaking for a man content in retirement only a year earlier.

The Billikens return four starters from last year's 26-win team that spent a portion of the season in the Top 25 and beat Memphis in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. One publication ranked them as high as No. 9 in its preseason poll, though that was before Saint Louis lost starting point guard Kwamain Mitchell to a broken foot that will likely sideline him most of November.

"I had to think about it because if you do it you have to be all in. You can't dibble and dabble," Crews said. "But first of all the staff is really fun to be around. We all get along great. The players we have coming back are enjoyable too And the administration was very, very honest. When you know exactly what the truth is, it's easy to get things done."

And the chance to coach a team with so much returning talent? That's "pretty good icing on the cake," Crews admits.

There was a time in his life when Crews thought he'd be much more likely to work for a Fortune 500 corporation than a Top 25 college basketball team.

Even though his father was a college coach and he played for the legendary Bob Knight on Indiana's undefeated 1976 national championship team, Crews had no interest in going into coaching during his playing days. He graduated from Indiana with a business degree and turned down an offer from Knight to join his staff immediately after college, instead going into the business world.

"In my way of thinking, which was not the correct way of thinking, athletes had a bit of a "dumb jock" stigma back then," Crews said. "I was dumb enough to probably believe that a little bit. If you went into coaching there was a stigma with that too, so that would have been a double whammy. That's not the right way to be influenced, but I let that influence me. I didn't want to be stereotyped. I knew Indiana had a great business school and I wanted to prove I could do it, so I did it."

[More Atlantic 10: The 15 most intriguing non-league games]

One year out of college, Knight again had an opening on his staff and he called Crews. By this time, Crews missed basketball and he agreed to return to Bloomington to begin his coaching career at his alma mater.

Crews spent eight years as an assistant under Knight before branching out on his own as a head coach.

He had some very successful years at Evansville in the 1980s and '90s, leading the Purple Aces to six NCAA tournaments. He also was fired after seven mediocre seasons at Army in Sept. 2009 amid reports alleging verbal and physical abuse of a player.

As a result of that up-and-down history, many consider Crews' ability to replace a top technical mind like Majerus to be the biggest question mark about this year's Saint Louis team. Crews understands the skepticism, yet he's confident in his ability and he doesn't think the transition will be as difficult as others think.

He has known Majerus since his playing days, recruited against him for years and coached with him last season and with USA Basketball. He has many of the same philosophies as a coach, from spacing and sets on offense, to fierce man-to-man defense, to the importance of being meticulous.

"We're not changing a whole lot," Crews said. "Defensively, it's 98, 99 percent the same. Offensively, big picture, it's the same. Player ball movement, spacing, rhythm. Rick prefers ball screens and my offense was screens away from the ball, but we're going to do what the players are invested in.

"Rick and I are very similar. I'm very detail-oriented. He is detail-oriented on steroids. He probably slows it down more in practice than I do, almost puts on a little clinic with things. We have more of a rapid-fire practice style now compared to him. But we're very similar in a lot of ways."

Once Mitchell returns to the Saint Louis lineup in a month, the Billikens will have the core of last year's ultra-successful team. The loss of leading scorer Brian Conklin will force others to shoulder a greater offensive burden, but few teams nationally will be better on defense.

In the backcourt, Mitchell averaged 12.4 points per game last season, played solid defense and distributed the ball capably to his teammates. Jordair Jett is a defensive stopper who needs to take his scoring up a notch, while Mike McCall will provide more of an offensive lift.

Highlighting the frontcourt is Cody Ellis, a sharp shooter who is also adept at taking charges in the paint. Center Rob Loe provides capable perimeter shooting, while forward Dwayne Evans is perhaps the best athlete and rebounder on the team.

Typically an interim coach will be worried about winning enough games to win over his administration and land the full-time gig, but that's not Crews' focus. Of course, he wants to win as many games as he can next season, but he'd have no problem returning to semi-retirement if Saint Louis chooses not to invite him back.

"My wife told me a long time ago, 'If you worry about next year, you can't enjoy this year,'" he said. "I think that's really a good way to put coaching. I don't care where you are, who you are or how long your contract is for. I've always kind of done that."

by in General

Starting pitchers in daily roto are like cell phones on The Wire. Use them up, chuck them out. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

Here's a look at the Wednesday slate.

Top notch, top notch
Phil Hughes vs. TOR
Chris Archer vs. BOS

It's surprising to see Archer available in 95 percent of Yahoo! leagues, as he offers several selling points. His strikeout clip jumps off the page, and he fanned 11 Rangers in his last spot turn. The catwalk will hide some mistakes, the Boston lineup isn't scaring anyone this late in the year, and Boston's opposing pitcher is Daisuke Matsuzaka. What else do you need to see? Make the add. … It's easy to put Hughes in the Circle of Trust, as four of his last five turns have been useful (heck, even the bad start had six strikeouts attached to it).

Better Than a Fresca
Lance Lynn vs. HOU
Marco Estrada at PIT

Lynn returned to the rotation in style, working six strong innings at Chavez Ravine (5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K). You wonder how deep he might go in this game given the recent bullpen work, and he is up against Houston's best starter, but nonetheless the Cardinals are heavy favorites here.

World Needs Ditchdiggers, Too
John Lannan vs. LAD
Lucas Harrell at STL
Trevor Cahill vs. SD
Edinson Volquez
at ARI
Kyle McPherson vs. MIL
Mike Leake at CHC

It's a shame Cahill and Volquez can't pitch this game where they'd like to: in San Diego. Cahill hasn't been comfortable in Arizona all year (5.10/1.49, nine homers, 5-7 record), and Volquez is even more of a horror show in his road starts (5.57/1.67, 49 walks against 70 punchouts). … McPherson has pretty relief numbers, but in a starting gig it's a complete crap shoot. … Lannan is a pitch-to-contact story (and that ugly K/BB rate worries you), but a 2.41 ERA and 1.18 WHIP through three starts (all wins) earns some cred. He's up against Josh Beckett, a favorable draw.

Tremendous Slouches
Joe Saunders at SEA
Liam Hendricks at CLE
Henderson Alvarez at NYY
Daisuke Matsuzaka at TB
Zach McAllister vs. MIN

Saunders has been his usual mediocre self through four Baltimore starts (4.30/1.43, 14 strikeouts, eight walks). With all due respect to the power of Safeco, I'd prefer to wait for better spots, especially given Felix Hernandez on the other side.

Canucks extend Burrows; should Bettman recuse himself?; Fart Cat (Puck Headlines)

14 Sep
2012

• Not sure what's more embarrassing about this photo for Ryan Miller: the fact that he appears to be struggling to stay awake during the NHLPA presser yesterday, or the fact that the caption reads, "Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks listens to the NHLPA press conference."

• The players really need a win this time around. [National Post]

• Elliotte Friedman thinks now might be a good time for Bettman should excuse himself. Is his presence in the CBA negotiations just making it harder to get a deal done? [CBC]

• Especially since he just signed a four-year extension with the Canucks worth $18 million. [Canucks]

• The Kings recently signed prospect Nicolay Prokhorkin, one of the standouts at their development camp, to an entry-level contract. Except they didn't, because they can't, because he has a deal with Red Army Moscow in the KHL. [Mayors Manor]

• Speaking of Bulis, Pass it to Bulis continues to raise money for the Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer charity, and a $500 donation by a gentleman named Nelson Ong necessitated a song in his honour. [PITB]

The Essentials: Philadelphia Flyers Edition

23 Aug
2012

(This month, Puck Daddy asked bloggers for every NHL team to tell us The Essentials for their franchises — everything from the defining player and trade, to the indispensable fan traditions. Here is Travis Hughes and Broad Street Hockey, giving us The Essentials for the Philadelphia Flyers.)

By Travis Hughes and Broad Street Hockey

Player

How can we not say Bobby Clarke?

If you think of the Philadelphia Flyers, what's the first thing that comes to mind? That gap-toothed grin. That he's also the greatest player in the history of the franchise doesn't hurt, either.

Honorable mention to Ron Hextall, because what defines Flyers hockey more than a goalie beating people up?

Season

If we're going with one season, it has to be the 1973-74 season, but we're going to cheat a bit and go with a single year instead of a season: 1976 defines the Flyers for a million reasons.

They had just come off two Stanley Cup titles in a row and were still considered the best team in the NHL. In January of that year, the Flyers faced off with and beat the Soviets before going on to their third straight Stanley Cup Finals appearance. It was also the bicentennial, and this being Philadelphia and all, it was a pretty defining time for both the team and the city.

Game

Has to be the Red Army Game with the Soviets. Not only were the Flyers the only NHL team to defeat the Soviets during that year's series, the way they did it defined the franchise. It's also quite possibly the only time since their inception that the entirety of North America was behind the Flyers.

The Flyers famously intimidated the Soviets with their tough play -- winning puck battles in the corners thanks to physical superiority, and of course, running the Red Army back to the locker room after a huge hit from Ed Van Impe -- but just as the Broad Street Bullies did against NHL competition in the 1970s, they outclassed the Soviets in the skill department as well.

The Flyers completely controlled the attack both before and after the Soviets retreated to the locker room after Van Impe's hit. Today's conventional wisdom says the Flyers won the Cup twice and were successful because they simply beat the crap out of other teams, but everybody forgets that those teams were damn talented too. Never was that more true than in this game against the supposed best team in the world.

Goal

The Flyers didn't win the Stanley Cup in 1987, losing in seven games to the Edmonton Oilers. But they probably shouldn't have even made it to a seventh game after falling behind 3-1 in the series. After coming back to force a Game 6 at the Spectrum, they fell behind 2-0 in a game completely dominated by the Oilers, but improbably, they staged a comeback.

J.J. Daigneault's goal to give the Flyers a late lead and force Game 7 has been called the loudest moment in the history of the Spectrum, and that's for good reason.

Trade

When it comes to dominant players in Flyers history, no player completely, single-handedly defined an era more than Eric Lindros. The trade that brought him to Philadelphia from Quebec is the essential trade in Flyers history. They sent Peter Forsberg, Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Steve Duchesne, two first round picks and $15 million to Quebec for Lindros. That's still mind-blowing 20 years later.

Forsberg, Hextall, Huffman and Duchesne all played for the Flyers later down the road after the trade, as did Nolan Baumgartner, one of the players selected with those first round picks.

Unsung Hero

His relationship with the team has changed considerably over the last year or so, but Eric Lindros still remains this organization's unsung hero. He's fifth all-time in points, but by far the best player in franchise history when it comes to points per game. He defined an entire decade of Flyers hockey and was perhaps the most dominating player in the league during his era.

His lack of longevity and his nasty departure from Philadelphia is chalked up against him both by Flyers fans and by the Hockey Hall of Fame, but Lindros is without a doubt one of the best players to ever pull on orange and black. He should be in the Hall and his number should be in the WFC rafters. Hopefully his reconciliation with the Flyers this past season -- thanks, Winter Classic Alumni Game! -- will eventually lead to that.

Franchise Villain

Sidney Crosby. Obviously. We don't need to explain.

Fight

Chris Chelios hit Brian Propp in Game 1. It was ugly. The Canadiens were about to end the Flyers season in Game 6, so Ron Hextall took matters into his own hands. Doc Emrick and Bill Clement were on the call, if you needed any more of a reason to watch the video:

Honorable mention to the 2004 brawl between the Flyers and Sens. Flyers won both the game and the fights, by the way.

Coach

The obvious choice is Fred Shero. He brought the Cup to Philadelphia twice and was perhaps the most innovative coach in NHL history not named Roger Neilson. But when we're talking "essential" Flyers coaches, how can we not go with Mike Keenan? He didn't bring the same level of success to the Flyers -- although his teams probably deserved at least one Cup in the 1980s -- but his style and his personality were (and still are) purely Philly.

Broadcaster

Gene Hart. The Voice. Even if you're not a fan of the Flyers, his book Score! is a must read. Rest in peace, Gene.

Arena Behavior/Tradition/Trend

Maybe it's a been overdone in recent years -- okay, not maybe; it is overdone -- but there's no tradition that defines more than Kate Smith singing God Bless America before a big game. When done right -- as in, not every single playoff game -- it whipped/whips the Spectrum/Corestates-First Union-Wachovia-Wells Fargo Center crowd into a frenzy and lays the groundwork for one of the loudest playoff atmospheres in the NHL.

Arena Food

The easy answer would be a cheesesteak, but you can't get an acceptable cheesesteak at the Wells Fargo Center.

Crabfries would have to be the go-to arena food in Philly, whether you're at a hockey game, a baseball game or anywhere in between.

Mmmmmm crabfries.

Swag

#HartnellDown apparel, whether it's from Scott's official foundation or our version (shamless plug!) from the Broad Street Hockey store.

Amendment to ban military sports sponsorship doesn’t pass U.S. House

18 Jul
2012

The amendment to the 2013 defense spending bill that would have prohibited military branches from sports sponsorship didn't pass in the House of Representatives Wednesday night.

The amendment, which was sponsored by Rep. Betty McCollum (D, MN) and Rep. Jack Kingston (R, GA), fell 216-202. It would have cut more than $72 million from the proposed $608 billion bill. Supporters of the amendment argued that the return on the investment from sponsorships like on Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s car doesn't match the investment.

Racing would have been the sport most heavily affected by the cuts. Earnhardt and IndyCar Series driver JR Hildebrand are sponsored by the National Guard and NHRA driver Tony Schumacher is sponsored by the US Army. Ryan Newman is currently sponsored by the Army in the Cup Series, but the Army previously announced that it wouldn't be returning in 2013. The vote does not affect the Army's decision to leave the Sprint Cup Series, and it also said that it would be staying in the NHRA.

It was the third time that an amendment to ban sports sponsorships has been presented and defeated. However, the vote has gotten closer the last two times, so there's a fair chance that we'll see similar arguments in the near future, perhaps even on the next defense spending bill. Want to see how your representative voted? The House posts all vote results here.
